I'm a civil engineer, and it sounds to me your husband is likely over qualified. We would post something that'd he'd probably be more interested in as at least 10+ years of experience and something more like supervisor or project management in the job title. That being said, if he finds a company he's interested in, I would still apply and see what happens. Good luck!!

@milano14: and @Mama Bird: thank you both! I appreciate hearing that perspective so that I don't have to pester him about it :) He's not great at communicating, so I walk a fine line between assuming he's doing the right thing and still wanting to make sure he's on top of things.

Engineer here, and my gut feeling is your husband is right and they're not looking for his level of experience. And the work at a small firm might be very different from that at a big firm - in my experience in a small company you wear many hats and actually pick up more experience, but in a big place you might end up doing a few niche things for years.

Then again, a big part of success is just showing up. Might be a good idea to have a resume ready and send it off when he sees one of these postings, but without much customizing or emotional investment.

Architect here
5 years plus experience in a job posting would make me think that you're husband is overqualified for the position (or at the least that they aren't looking to hire for a salary that would be required with his experience).
Having said that, you never know what positions the firm is really looking to fill or what they're long term goals are. Maybe your husband has experience with a specialty that would benefit their firm or get them projects that they've been trying to land.
I would say if the firm is of an interest to him then still apply for the position. Worst case you never hear from them or they say he's over qualified. If he does get an interview I wouldn't sacrifice salary requirements or anything like that just because the job posting alludes to a less experienced employee.
Good luck to him!

I have a question for any architect bees, or if your spouse is an architect. DH got laid off last week. He's a licensed architect with almost 25 years of experience. He was working for a small firm, and they just ran out of work. Here's what I'm wondering... I see a good number of job listings for "Project Architect" or "Level II Architect" that also specify "over 5 years of experience." My interpretation is that they want to make sure the person isn't fairly new, but that there's no experience cut off, especially if they are looking for someone who is licensed. DH's interpretation is that they want someone with 5-10 years of experience and it's not worth applying for. But I don't really see anything that specifies more than 10 or 15 years of experience. I'm trying to decide how much to pressure him to apply for these types of postings, but obviously I've never hired an architect, so I don't really know. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!
