I didn't mean for the focus to be on school supplies - I was just so curious about the welcome gift! It is such a small but thoughtful and perfect gift for K!

A. I can't remember and/or we weren't "privy" to the info from DH's ex, about the boys. However, I just asked my girlfriend who's 2 girls have both gone through the kindergarten year recently/is right now.

She said that yes, they did get welcome packages during their orientation.

B. NEAT, there is a book about my cat.

@Mamaof2: yup! Edit: not sure if it'll be that way for all grades, but it is for Kindergarten.

Just chiming in as a first time US kindergarten parent-- no school supply list for us! All we have to provide is a set of headphones for when they use the computer (more sanitary for each kid to have their own), a snack, and we have to keep their lunch account at a positive balance if we want them to buy lunch.

We do have school supply lists (which are supplies that the child would use only) and some fees (lunch monitoring, bussing), but they're capped at a reasonable amount (200 or so) and subsidies are available. I don't know about the welcome packs.

Well my last experience with Kindergarten was when I attended lol. My DD is only a year old. I don't think I received anything like this myself as a kid growing up in Canada. I'd say it probably depends on the school.

I teach Grade 2 in Canada - we definitely still have a school supply list , but a lot of elementary teachers will also do a welcome back bag with small items (books, crayons, small treat, etc, similar to above) for the students. Probably depends on your teacher. I bet a lot of American teachers do the same!

In the states, kids go to Kindergarten with a list of school supplies a mile long. This list (at least in our county) includes tissues, paper towels, wipes, dry erase markers; as well as all the typical "school" supplies.

Well, I was reading a blog post this morning where the family lives in Vancouver. They went to check out the school for the first time and were given a Welcome to Kindergarten packet. Ah, what? Check this out, it's so cute!

Is this normal in Canada? Just this school, perhaps? See pic for what what included.
