40 oz a day is fantastic!!! I think I was doing 6-7 session per day at that point and I wasn't getting nearly as much as you.

@poundcake: I think everyone has a magic number and you just have to experiment. I was still making over 40 oz a day when I was at 5 pumps a day. So if I'd stayed there I'd probably have been great--but that required me to pump twice at work and that was really hard for me to manage. I dropped to 4 pumps a day (only once at work on my lunch break) just because I was always so stressed trying to find time for a second pump that wasn't my lunch break and I kept having people try to walk in on my pumping.

Or If I'd never gotten sick, 4 times a day probably would have been fine. But with these things, you just never know. I wasn't so upset about my dropped supply that I wanted to add that 5th pump back in, you know? =)

@poundcake: I dropped from 8-7 times a day right at 3 months (I'd been waking up twice a night (insane, now I think about it) to pump and I dropped to once at night, or not at all if I stayed up late/woke up early. I was also pumping about 45 oz a day at that point, sometimes more.

I was able to maintain a good supply until I dropped to 4 pumps a day (but 30 minutes each) which I did right after 6 months. My supply dropped a little, maybe down to 35 oz a day but my LO has never been a big eater, taking in an average of 25 oz a day so I was totally fine with that...

But then I got the flu...followed by the stomach flu. My supply dropped to almost nothing when I was sick and then "recovered" but only to about 25 oz a day on average.

That would have been fine if I'd had my awesome freezer stash (I had over 1000 oz), but when my LO was diagosed at MSPI, I had to donate it all because I knew she wouldn't be able to tolerate it and it would expire.

Anyway, now I just barely cover what she makes every day. Some days I'm short and I give an oz of Neocate alone with BM in a bottle (she won't take neocate alone).

4 times a day is *so* much more manageable that I don't mind it. My LO is about to be 11 months and I've been doing 4 times a day since 6 months.

Babies usually drink between 25-35 oz a day, and this amount stays about the same due to the increase of fattiness in the milk as baby grows.

40 oz is a great output! I pumped 8-10 times a day for a long time and was always afraid to drop sessions. I was still pumping about 5-6 times a day before I weaned after a year.

I was pumping a lot and nursing very little (maybe once a day) when LO 1 was 10 weeks old. I just checked Baby Connect and I was pumping 8-10 times a day and getting 38-45 ounces. I froze a lot of milk and it came in handy when I got pregnant at 7 months PP.

Eventually nursing got easier for me and I didn't pump as much.

Wow- 40 oz is amazing!!!

At the start I did 6-7x a day and would get about 20oz total. By 2 months I was down to 5 pump a day and then kept dropping one session a month until I got to 3x a day which was super manageable. For me, it didn't matter how many times I pumped ... I always got around 20oz a day.

Good luck! Once you find a manageable number and balance it gets much easier.

This question is for all you experienced exclusive pumpers :)

Do you recall how many times a day you were pumping at around the 10 week mark and how much you were getting per day?

I've been pumping 8-10 times a day since LO was born... over the last week or so, I've been experimenting with dropping sessions. Right now, I'm at down to 6 sessions per 24 hour period (going anywhere between 3.5 - 5.5 hours in between sessions) and my daily output is still around 40 oz, give or take a couple of ounces. This is great news to me as it makes pumping seem more doable for the long-term.

Am I being overly optimistic? Assuming LO takes 25-30 ounces per day, I'll still have some left to freeze. I'm not concerned with building a huge freezer stash since I have limited freezer space. I've read that the amount babies consume stays pretty much the same until the 6 month mark but should I worry about increased milk needs down the road?
