@mrskc: keep us posted! It's a great tool...when I brought my 3 years of charts to my acupuncturist, he said it showed him so much that he could draw from, so I say the more you know, the better!

@looch: @Andrea: Thanks ladies for the help. I know I must of ovulated. I had a positive OPK last week. My temps have been higher. This morning it was 97.6. All this is so interesting. I love getting to know my body better.

the highest my temperature ever gets is 98.6. my normal temperature is quite low, around 97 and dips below that, too. so i wouldn't worry about low temperatures. as long as you're temping at the same time every day you will see the spike when ovulation occurs.

I'd suggest the following: set your alarm for the same time every day, weekends included and take your temperature at this time. Record only that one, and if you find you are waking up naturally earlier, reset your alarm. Note this time on your charts, so you remember when you're looking back.

You really need a few months of data to be able to make anything from the information. If you want to know that you're ovulating this month, use OPK sticks.

I really think we're conditioned to think that the normal temperature is 98.6, and that's just not the case. There are so many factors involved, like if you drank alcohol the night before, woke up to pee, etc.

@mrskc: Taking it at 5:20am does likely have a big effect. There is a companion website for the book that I mentioned, and it discusses the waking time variance for temperature:
As explained in the previous option, basal temperature rises in a predictable manner beginning early in the morning. For most women, it has been observed that this rise is roughly 0.1° Fahrenheit per 30 minutes.

http://www.tcoyf.com/wikis/tcoyf/temperature-amp-time.aspx

So, for example, if you are comparing your temp to someone who wakes up at 7:30am, your temp would likely be closer to 97.8, rather than 97.45, if you slept that late. Hope that helps!

@beka: Good to know. I don't know that I have any low functioning thyroid symptoms. Not even sure what those would be. I do take it at 5:20 am and I got to bed 10-10:30 PM so maybe that could be it. Or maybe I just run lower than other people. I'll have to look into that book! Thank you!

Just an fyi, low temps can mean a low-functioning thyroid - that was originally how I realized that my thyroid needed attention. If you have other symptoms of low thyroid function, you might bring that up to your doctor.

But it could also be what time you take it - for example, when I had a different job and woke up later, my temps were higher. Now though, because I get up earlier, my temps are lower than they were then. There is a .5 degree temp shift per half hour of additional sleep, if I am remembering correctly (if you haven't already, read Taking Charge of Your Fertility!) So much good stuff in that book :)

@looch: Thanks for the info! Here is my chart so far. I'm not sure how valid it is since starting on the second day, I was recording the 2nd or 3rd temp I took. So now I've been taking my temp 3 times every morning in hopes of keeping some consistency. The highest my temp has reached is 97.45. Just seems so low when I look at other people's temps after they O.

Ok so always first temp. The first day I tested I got 96.23. It seems so low, but I guess all that matters is that I see a rise. I think my chart is invalid this month since I was writing down the second or third reading I got. Thanks for all the help!

I always had low temps, so I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you can see a clear temp shift that's all that matters. Always stick to the first temp as that one is the most accurate. Goodluck!

Also make sure your therm is accurate. 96.8 is low, but it's not totally out of the ordinary. I was all over the place my first week or so, but then really got used to it and it seems like my temps evened out.

I started taking my BBT about a week ago in hopes of confirming my O this cycle. I noticed my temps are always so low. below 97 degrees. Then I also noticed that it goes up each time I take it. I've been taking it a second time to see if it stays the same and it's always higher. Then I take it a third time and it's even higher. Like this morning it was 96.8, 97.1, 97.33. I do sleep with my mouth open so I'm wondering if that's throwing it off. I take it consistently at the same place under my tongue and at the same time every morning.

So what temp do I use? The first reading? Take it until it's more consistent? I'm such a newb at this.
