Just ask them not to have it in your house. If they get upset, or don't want to come, then whatevs.

We are gun owners. I think what blackbird says is appropriate. It's absolutely their right to carry a gun but if you don't feel comfortable with it in your home, that's your choice and they need to respect that.

I don't see why people need to take their guns to peoples' houses. My parents have concealed weapon permits, but they don't bring them to my house or anything. I doubt they go to their friends houses with them on. Maybe stored in the glove compartment or something. That's weird. Are you sure they'd have them on them?

Maybe if you talk to them before they come, you can just casually ask them if they really take them everywhere with them...even peoples' houses. They might say that they wouldn't bring them to your house, anyways.

@blackbird: Ahhh, I just don't get why people get so defensive about it! Especially my cousin. I just want to be like, "Girl, please! Before this guy you wouldn't have been comfortable with it either, and now everything he says and likes is the gold standard. Please."

@MrsH: I do trust them to at least tell me the truth about it - I have a feeling it will be either no problem and they'll totally understand, or they'll get super defensive and not want to do it. I'm just trying to word it the best way I can to hopefully get the first reaction.

I would just express that while you support the right to conceal/carry, your personally wish is to have them leave it in the car when visiting. I think anyone who is level headed should understand and respect your request. If they don't agree explain you are not comfortable with a handgun in your house.

I totally feel you. My mom just got her conceal and carry and I said that Dh and I were not comfortable with it being in the house unless it was in a lock box. She said ok, and my dad got upset and said it would be ok up on the shelf or in her purse in the closet and got kind of defensive that I dared to suggest it!

Anyways, we just plan on buying the lock box and having my mom deposit her gun at every visit.

It's their right to carry a gun but in a private residence that is YOURS, you have the final say.

I wonder if you could just ask them what kind of lock box they suggest for people to put their guns into? Maybe that would be drama, too

People can take anything offensively. I'd just approach them with the stance that you know that they carry concealed and could they kindly leave it in their vehicle. That said people carrying guns may not let you know try have them. Are you willing to take them at their word?

This seems like a random place to ask, but I could use some outside opinions.

If you own guns, and specifically if you have your concealed weapon permit, what is an unoffensive way someone could ask you to not carry your weapon on you in their home? Or are some people just always going to get defensive about this no matter how politely you word it?

This isn't something I've ever given much thought to - many of my family members (dad, brother, grandpa, uncle, etc.) hunt and have weapons in their home - rifles, pistols, etc. I've never given it much thought, they're all responsible people who keep them in spots where the kids couldn't get access to them.

However, my cousin and her fiance recently got their concealed weapon permit, and while I do not have a problem with guns in general, I do NOT want them in my home. It's not something my DH and I are comfortable with, period. They're always posting stuff on FB about making sure you have your gun before you leave the house, stuff about the right to carry, etc. I understand it's their right, but it's also obviously my right to tell them they can't bring them into my home. I'm just not sure about the least dramatic way to go about it. They're supposed to come over for a visit next week, and I want to address it before then. My LO is just starting to move everywhere and be into everything, and honestly, neither of them are people I'd put in the same category as my responsible family members who I trust with a gun.
