I work two days (20hrs total) and am not sure if I will continue to do that or SAH when LO#2 arrives. I have a pretty sweet schedule though, so it would be hard to give it up and not know if I could find something similar down the road.

Ideally, I'll SAH indefinitely. My mom stayed at home even when we were in school, and she would volunteer at our school/do housework/cook/do errands during the day and that freed her up to just spend time with us when we got home from school and not have to be busy getting everything done in the evenings. If we can afford it, I would like to be in a similar situation!

I work part time ( 3 days, 9-5) and will hopefully continue to do that. After school programs seem so unorganized to me with the mixed age nature of them, so hope to limit as much as possible!

I'd like to go back to school PT evenings soon and then start working PT when the oldest is in school and youngest is eligible for toddler daycare. The second LO is still cooking but we are open to the idea of having a third so it all depends on that. In my field I can probably find something to work my own hours but I will need to keep up with school, so I'll plan to finish around the time that's I'd be looking for a permanent job.

I do plan on going back. When? Not sure. I might do some part-time now that we have some help but I would still like to take my youngest to classes and hang out with him as much as I can. I hate to miss this age (he's almost 2)... so much fun and it goes by so quickly.

I am thinking about taking a bit of a different approach to this.
I am currently a sahm but will be going back to work in a few months. LO is currently 13 months. I am thinking about going back to being a p/t sahm when my kids are in school full time. For me It feels more important to be there for them after school, help with homework etc. rather than now when his life is simpler if that makes sense!
It will depend on career progression and finances of course.

I honestly don't plan to ever be a full SAHM again.

I am a SAHM for now. My background is in software engineering for the financial sector (banking, lending, and loans software). It was a very well paid job but everything comes with a price. It was demanding with long hours and constant traveling. I am surprised that I love being a SAHM so much because prior to this I was a workaholic and a social butterfly. I was also on the company's entertainment committee. My friends keep asking me if I miss the adult interaction and I really don't, not yet at least. I wonder if it's because I stay " connected" with other adults on IG and FB and texting?? LOL Anyway, I think it's because this journey to motherhood was not an easy one for me so I don't want to miss any moments with LO. I will go back when I find the perfect fit in daycare for LO...don't want to rush this one bit! Bittersweet.

I became a SAHM with the intention that it was only going to be for a year. Well my year is up and I'm pretty excited about working again. While I loved being at home with my LO for 18 months, I think she is starting to need more socialization than I can give her with just play dates. She started daycare recently and she seems to be doing great there which makes me so happy.

For our family, this extended "maternity leave" worked out really well.

I don't know. Everyone and their mother seems to think I am wasting my brain by staying home, or something to that effect. Part of me would like to go back to school and start a new career but another part of me loves being home with the kiddos. I guess I will decide after our youngest is old enough for school, although that might be 5-10 years down the line.

I am a SAHM and co-own a business that I work from home with (but it only takes minutes of my day so I wouldn't necessarily call myself a wahm). Right now the plan is for me to stay home until my daughter (and #2 that we are planning for when my DD is around 3-4) is in school but I'm also considering homeschooling as an option. Ideally, I would love to work from home or work only part time until my kids are grown! ;)

@Mrs. Pen: more than industry, I think it is supply and demand for the jobs. In certain parts of the country, you have a lot if graduates that are willing to work for a lot less to get their foot in the door. I also have seen first hand that the people they welcome back are the ones that have specific industry knowledge. It is a risk you take when you become specialized as you limit your potential opportunities, but it can also pay you back nicely.

I think a woman's best bet is to scale back to part time if possible, rather than exit altogether. I wish there were more options.

Yep! I am trying to keep my toe in the water by volunteering, but it's tough when we keep moving. So, I'm trying to develop my blog and pursue creative endeavors that may eventually develop into part-time income instead of pocket money, now. I plan on actively pursuing part-time work in my field once any and all LOs are in school full-time, and then full-time when it feels right (depending on where we live, logistics, etc.) but for sure once they're in high school.

@Mrs. Pen: Yes, but this was also my mom's second marriage and she was 40 when she had me. My dad was 51 and they were set financially so she probably didn't feel the need.
