Thanks everyone. There were some great suggestions. Maybe I can have her go in a specific place and then teach the kids to stay away from it.

@autumnlove: bummer.

@Mrs. Confetti: We are in a temporary apartment for a couple more weeks and picking up wet, stinky poo is just for the birds.

@photojane: That is a good idea about waiting a bit to pick it up. It doesn't take long for it to harden up.

@mamabolt: Love the idea of "outside shoes".

Ours just go out in the back yard and I clean it up every couple of days, usually right before I take LO outside to play. It is my least favorite chore BY FAR!

Man, we are city people and I wish I could have this problem. We have to take her for a walk every time she does her business, 1 or 2. They make things to attach to the leash that hold a roll of bags.

Both have full access to the back yard and it's never been an issue for us. I'd hate it if I had to take the dog out on a leash for every bit of business, that's the main reason we bought a house with a fenced yard. We pick up poop once a week, usually when he's out playing and I'm not doing anything else but keeping an eye on him.

My sister created a narrow (but long) dog run in her backyard. Dogs did their business in the dog run and they picked it up whenever....kids played on the other side.

We have two dogs who go out back and when LO is playing we go out the front yard. I'd say we pick up about 3 times a week, they are walked a lot though so usually do their business outside of their own garden.

we have an acre. Part of it is fenced in for the dogs, and there's still plenty of unfenced yard for the kids. D goes and throws the ball with them in their fence, though.

My husband set up a little fenced area in the yard for the dogs to go it so the rest of the yard is poop free. That way the dogs can go out the dog door and do their business whenever they need to, but the rest of the yard stays clean.

Our dog doesn't generally go in our yard, just on walks, worst case he pees, or goes on the property behind us (we have a trail/marsh/park behind us.

We visited friends who let their dog use their yard and it just stunk even though they cleaned everything up. For me it's more important to let my kids hae free run of the yard than the dog!! We use our yard a lot.

Growing up we had a fenced in backyard and a fenced in side yard that led to the back, but was pretty much all deck. For emergencies only the dog was allowed to use the side deck's dirt/ grass beds for his business. Otherwise, he was walked twice a day. My dad still picked up his poop from the side yard.

We let him out to poop wherever he wants. I just take a couple Walmart bags out with me whenever I take Sadie out to play, and pick up the poop then. By that time it's hard and easy to pick up without gagging. We have a small dog though, and his poops are easy to pick up.

We do, and we pick up once a week or sometimes less - it's DH's dog that I don't like so if he doesn't pick up it doesn't get done. One thing we do is have "outside shoes" right next to the door - if we are going to play in the yard we all change into those shoes and that way if there is a misstep we aren't dealing with cleaning off a nicer pair of shoes.

i know someone who had a genius setup for this!! the deck had two sets of stairs down, both of which had a gate and could be latched to stay open or closed. around the space under the deck had lattice and the ground had loose stones. so the set of stairs leading down to the enclosed space under the deck (it was a tall deck, the 6'3" owner could walk around underneath) and this was for the dog to go do their business, the solids would stay on top of the rocks & would get picked up every few days, but you could just keep the dog stairs latched open, close the people stairs, open the slider, dog does their thing and comes back up or they can chill on the deck! grass stays clean & free from burn marks from urine and you can close off the dog gate if the kids are playing on the deck. it was great!

That would never work for us - our dog has a doggie door and poops when he likes! He's been around longer than our son and generally poops in the far corners of the yard, but he decided that himself. If we're good/quick about cleaning up after him it's no problem. I think training our kid where NOT to go is easier than changing our dog's habits.

I have always wondered this too- we had a backyard where we played growing up, but no dog, then my parents got a dog after kids were grown, so the dogs could just go wherever in the yard.

My sister had a smaller yard and they still take the dog for a walk to do his business- he doesn't even pee in the backyard usually. That way they aren't worried about their toddler getting into everything.

We try to take them on a run once a day and they usually poop then. Most days I do a poop walk around the yard in the morning, sometimes also in the evening or when they're out running around I do a walk around too. So I'm not watching for every time they poo but it does get cleaned up fairly quickly. I often pick up some of the grass underneath with it too, grass grows back. And if it's too messy to completely pick up I rinse it off with a hose. We have a bit less than a quarter acre. Our one dog usually goes in the brush, which is convenient, but that's just her personality, I've tried to encourage our other dog to do that but he hasn't learned.

I'm not due till end of Nov/Dec, but I do have a dog and a fenced yard! I find that my dog usually does her business in one general area so we only scoop poop twice a week. I just would not let me LO run to that area until we check it for poop first if we are out there all the time.

If you have a fenced yard, do you let your dog do their business in the fenced part? Do you pick up everytime they poop? Is there a certain place in your yard you can make your dog go? Or do you take your dog for a walk and save the backyard for the kids? We are moving from a 3+ acre lot to a much smaller urban lot. My dog can't be let off a leash (she would run off to find someone to pet her) so I used to take her to a certain part of the yard where no one goes and I wouldn't have to pick up poop. Now, my husband is saying I can't let her go in the backyard because the kids will be playing there. I just wasn't sure what other people did. I can see his point because I really hate washing dog poop off shoes, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to walk her as much. All I see in my future is 3X per day walking a dog with poop bags stuck out of my pockets.
