Depends on the person. If it's someone picky about things, I always stay on registry so they won't have to return it or I won't waste my money. If they're more laid back ill go off registry.

I usually don't do gift retaliation, I just stick to their registry. But, I'll admit there was a time or two where someone didn't get the best gift they could have from me out of frustration.

No I like to stick with registries. I'm leaving a ton of stuff out of mine bc I have hand me downs so I hope people aren't trying to be smart and buy me things I already have!

I stick to the registry for the most part, but might buy a few small off-registry items (like baby clothes or a bottle of wine) to complete a gift.
If there's nothing left in my price range, I get a gift card.

If they did something really creative and thoughtful, then I would try to give them something thoughtful too (like one friend stuck mostly to the registry but put everything into a beautiful basket that she decorated herself so I tried to make her gifts special too)

Definitely buy off the registry. Sometimes I'll add in a personal items for someone I know well. For example: I'm going to a shower this weekend and I bought one item from the registry and I'm giving them a pillow with their initials and wedding year on it. For our wedding we got one obvious regift item and some just weird/tacky items. Once person gave us a platter with "Italy" and an italian scene on it. However, neither of us are from there or have any connection with it. I donated it to goodwill.

@swedishfish: Er, a week of dinners that is! Not all three squares a day! And big family style meals that can be eaten more than once. I'm not even sure if such a company exists. If not, we will get them books. Never can have too many books! Yes, that is a wide departure huh!? I think you can really tell how I feel about this couple smh...

@swedishfish: It depends. Did they get me something off registry that I've actually like and use because they know me well, or did they get me something totally random that smells like a regift  ? With almost everyone (even close friends), I usually get at least one thing from their registry, and then if I want to do more, I give them something a little more personal, too. For example I'm headed to a colleague's shower this weekend, and got her something off her registry, but also a couple onesies because I figure cute clothes can't hurt. I have been in @dc yoga bee: 's position.....my aunt got me a really ornate and ugly/heavy crystal bowl for our wedding that I'd never use in a million years, and didn't have the space for. Not only was it "off" registry-it was from a store that we didn't have locally, so to return it I'd have to send it back and the money would go back on her card, insulting her (and she is the type to get insulted). My mom very thankfully stepped in and I sent it to her, and she returned it and bought me something I actually needed with the store credit. I will say if I buy a gift off-registry (like I bought a rock n' play for a friend who didn't know about them and I really thought she'd love it), I do include a gift receipt in case they truly don't want it.

@swedishfish: LOL!!! Someone did that with my crockpot. The one on my registry was already purchased, so they purchased another crockpot off of Amazon that was $20, and then bragged about it at the wedding. If a crockpot was already purchased, why buy me another crockpot in a different model and then brag about how cheap it was??? When they got married we were unable to make the wedding, but I may or may not have just given them a $20 gift card. Okay, I'm totallllly sounding bitter right now!

@dc yoga bee: haha, this distant cousin got me a joint gift of a diaper bag and a diaper pail with some other small things. The diaper bag was nice but I didn't register for one because I already had one. Returning it was a pain because we had to go to the outlets. I had registered for a diaper pail but she bought me a different one while the registered one had already been purchased for a while. I got one really cheap bottle that BRU wouldn't even take back. They told me to try Walmart. :silly: I'll probably just go in on a gift with my mom.

I honestly am not sure I'd remember whether someone went off the registry or not :P Regardless, I'd always go registry first, then possibly add something small from off-registry (I like to do theme gifts like a gift basket made of little items). I'd go off-registry only if they didn't have any small items left on their registry.
