When we just went around looking at rentals I was very open about expecting a child and if anything it was seen as a positive. I think if you fear retribution, try to hide it and don't mention it (to the law your baby doesn't exist yet anyway so no need to put it down on your lease) and get the house without anyone knowing you're pregnant. Best of luck!

I've posted about this before, but in my state, families with young children are absolutely discriminated against. There are very strict laws about lead paint removal and deleading certification for any home with a child under 6 living there and landlords can get sued way down the line, so I can't blame them for not wanting to rent to families, but at the same time, it makes it really hard to find a rental! So for me, yes, I absolutely hid it when we were looking, even though the place we moved into was built after the lead paint laws went into effect anyway.

I guess it depends on the market in your area, but I'd probably not mention it. My landlord still doesn't know I'm having a baby and we moved in 3 weeks ago and I'm 26 weeks pregnant.

We rented an apartment and they were actually hoping for someone with kids. I think a family with kids signals stability and maturity and that you're probably not going to have loud parties all the time.

@illumina: I mentioned it when we were looking to rent and I think it helped us get our townhouse

Agree... I can't imagine someone asking you that, what a violation of privacy.

^ Agreed. It's none of their business. I can understand disclosing pets, but they don't need to know that you're pregnant.

I wouldn't mention it because its none of their business. It's also illegal to discriminate based on whether or not you have children.
I guess the only wrinkle is if the lease specifies a max # of occupants.

So let's say you are viewing houses to rent and you are 20wks pregnant, but could easily hide it. Would you be honest with an agent/landlord about expecting a baby in the near future or would you not mention it.

I've lined up a bunch of viewings for next week and when agents ask if we have children I say no, as we won't have when we move in.

Do you think we would be discriminated against for having a baby?

The houses we are looking at are large-ish 4-bed family homes so I would have thought landlords would be looking to rent to families anyway, but just wondered whether we should mention it.
