<description>&#60;p&#62;I think it depends. I see a therapist for my anxiety, which is both generalized and triggered by specific situations, and we talk about levels of avoidance. For example, if there are things that cause low to mid-levels of anxiety, they shouldn't be avoided, because I can work through them and gain confidence in doing so. But, if there is something that causes an extreme level of anxiety, like panic attack status, it's OK to avoid it, because purposely inducing panic is basically self-torture and could undermine confidence. The goal is to get the anxiety to a manageable level on a daily basis and then consider experimenting with situations that would have previously induced panic, all the while being gentle enough with myself to know it's fine if I can't do something.

<description>&#60;p&#62;@alohaorchid:  I've had two different kinds of anxiety - dental anxiety that took years of work to finally overcome. I took baby steps, small visits with someone who really babied me through it.&#60;br /&#62;
And PTSD anxiety from a violent (terrorist) gunfire fight behind my house where I couldn't sleep for over a year and was triggered by loud noises (like fireworks and emergency vehicles) and helicopters. That one took some therapy and I don't know if I'll ever truly get over it but I can sleep now. :) &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Definitely talk to someone and find a plan that's best for your anxiety.  :heart:

<description>&#60;p&#62;I think that knowing your triggers in important, but anxiety should be addressed.  (Addressed as in- talk to a dr., a counselor, do self help, excersize, whatever helps.)  I really can't give advice, I'm no professional!&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;I think it depends on the individual case. If doing the activity could cause a worse set back, then by all means, the person shouldn't do it. But if it's party of a therapy plan, then they should.&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;@alohaorchid: I don't know if it varies for a child vs an adult but my DS is seeing a LCSW for anxiety and I was told to force him to do it - that he needs to learn how to cope with the situation. Its ok to leave once you get there if things get overwhelming but we have to at least try.

<description>&#60;p&#62;I'm especially interested to hear from bees who have some kind of experience with anxiety (either yourself or a family member/friend).&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I know that it's usually better not to hide from situations that feed into anxiety, and to work through the feelings to deal with it. However, when a person is going through a particularily anxious time in their life (say they have an anxiety disorder and it's been flaring up lately), should anxiety provoking situations be avoided whenever possible?&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I'm not talking about daily life like work, grocery shopping, etc. I'm talking about bigger things like if public speaking creates more anxiety, then if it can be avoided while this &#34;flare up&#34; passes, should it? Or should the person force themselves to do it?
