My doctors advised an induction for GD, and I was desperate to get baby out. I think though that they would have respected my request if I'd wanted to delay the induction a bit.

At my hospital the options for induction are either cervidil or foley bulb. I chose the foley because she said that with cervidil they consider you on medication and will check on you every few hours. With the foley they put it in and leave you alone over night. I wanted to sleep and not be disturbed.

In retrospect it wasn't a great decision. The foley placement was really unpleasant, as was trying to sleep with a bunch of stuff taped to my leg. On top of that it didn't really work to dilate me, though I did start contracting regularly around 2am. So basically I got no sleep anyways.

@Torchwood: I'm not in the States but my OB has advised that I could possibly go to 41 weeks providing I remain diet-controlled and don't have any further complications. At this point in time (35w2d, diagnosed at 29 weeks) and I'm not scheduled to have any additional monitoring apart from a possible 3rd growth scan closer to 39/40 weeks.

It's always worth keeping an open dialogue with your providers and expressing your wishes because policy doesn't always work with individual cases!

Thank you all for the responses! Sounds like experiences vary, but GD is not an automatic induction incentive. I feel better knowing some of the ways it could play out!

I had GD with my 2nd pregnancy and had the baby at 37 1/2 weeks. I was having a c section anyway but it was moved up because of low fluid. My GD was controlled though diet. My placenta was just quitting early. I had weekly ultrasounds starting at 32 weeks and towards the end you could see it declining steadily each week.

I have GD and will be induced in my 39th week because I am on insulin. As such, the GD is very well-controlled and my recent AC1 is actually way below the diabetic range now. My doctor said the reason for the induction is because I am on medication and that the concern is not how big the baby is (I am at 36.5 weeks now and my baby is not that large), but whether or not my placenta will last for all 40 weeks. Currently I have an ultrasound and an NST every week to make sure all is well.

My SIL had gd for both her pregnancies, and she wasn't induced either time. She was able to control it through diet and had pretty much textbook deliveries.

I had GD with both of my pregnancies, and I went into labor on my own and delivered vaginally at 38w + 4d (5 lbs 13 oz) and 39w + 1d (6lbs 1oz). My GD was diet controlled. With my second pregnancy, the doctors were concerned about low birth weight and wanted to induce at 39w. I asked my doctor if it was necessary if the baby was growing well and everything else looked good on the ultrasounds and at check ups. She was willing to let me go until 40w. There was never any concern about weight with my first pregnancy, and he ended up being even smaller.

@Torchwood: I had GD and was scheduled to be induced at 40w, 1d. I was planning on fighting that and asking the doctor to give me the weekend since I had managed my GD with diet, never had a high reading once I began managing it and only gained 25 pounds (I'm a small girl to begin with). I went into labor naturally at 39w, 5d and gave birth via C-section at 39w, 6d because he got stuck after pushing for 2 hours. He ended up being 6lbs, 13oz...so not a giant baby by any means.

I'm at a higher risk this time around as well, and I'm planning on a RCS. I don't want to go earlier than 39w, 4d, but I know that's going to depend on the new OB I'm seeing.

I was not allowed to go late at all because of my GD due to concerns about how it strains your placenta, but I would imagine it depends quite a bit on your doctor. Induction wasn't an option for me since I wasn't at all dilated by the time baby needed to come out and I've had a c-section in the past.

Mine was also a case where what I ate didn't matter, my fasting numbers were the problem and I ended up on the smallest possible dose of medication to help with that, but the closer I got to 40 weeks the higher my numbers rose. Baby still ended up pretty big though (8lz 4oz at 38 weeks.) So unfortunately that's something to keep in mind - your GD can worsen later on.

1) I had GD and was not induced. I went into labor on my own at 40w2d and delivered vaginally at 40w3d. My daughter was 7lbs, 10.5 oz. at birth and had normal blood sugar levels. I was not considered to be high risk or encouraged to induce due to GD. Ask your provider about your options. *I live in Kentucky and delivered with a CNM in Indiana.*

2) That's something you will have to ask your provider because it varies.

1. I have GD and am being induced because it could not be managed with diet alone. I'm on meds to keep my sugars down. It's my understanding that the induction & 2x a week NST is because I have GD and am on meds to treat it, and that I would be treated normally if I had GD without meds. I'm in Oregon I'm not sure how it varies.

2. Depending on how 'ripe' my cervix is, they will do one of two less invasive drugs to try and induce before having to do pit.

This should probably be two threads, but they're pretty simple questions.

1- Is a GD diagnosis going to mean pretty much automatic induction, or would I still be allowed to go later as long as it's managed fine and baby isn't looking huge? I had it last time, so I'm at risk to have it a again. But it was so minor, it was almost a joke. I could have been eating straight sugar and as long as I had some protein, my blood sugar stayed low. When my cousin had it, she couldn't even eat something like ketchup, no matter what she had with it. So if it's minor and well-managed, might I avoid the induction?

2- What alternatives are available in the states, if I'd like to avoid pitocin? With the termination, they insert laminaria into the cervix to open it, and that alone was enough that I had to take pills to stop contractions the night before I was actually supposed to deliver. And that was at 33 weeks, with no signs labor would have started on its own anytime soon. So I feel like if I do wind up being induced, my body at least might respond well enough to something else to not need pitocin. But I don't even know what questions to ask if it is ever an issue.
