As a follow up in case anyone comes across this post searching for information about molar pregnancies. Our pregnancy was confirmed with the final pathology report to be a partial molar pregnancy. My doctor says that of the two types of molar pregnancies, partial molar is the "better" of the two in that it is less likely to be invasive. My HCG levels have gone from 574 the week after the surgery to 27 about 3 weeks later. Once my HCG levels hit 0, I will need monthly blood work to make sure it stays negative. Because of that we must wait at least 6 months before TTC again. This is the worst blow of the news we received. We are trying our best to stay positive, but of course that's not always easy.

Thanks to everyone who gave their advice and experience in this thread. It is very much appreciated!

@mrs.shinerbock: I'm so sorry you were in a similar situation. Thank you so very much for sharing with me, I truly appreciate it! I won't jump to any conclusions until we see the Dr on Wednesday but I know it will be hard to hear we have to wait. Your story gives me hope

@HappyBluebird: I am so sorry you are going through this. It really, really sucks to finally get the BFP that you have been trying for, miscarry, and then be told you need to wait a year until you can try again. And hardly anyone understands because they were all given the go-ahead to TTC within a cycle or two.

After working with an RE, I finally got a BFP. I did not have strong pregnancy symptoms. Some increased sensitivity to smells and a touch of morning sickness, but I never threw up.
6 week US showed 2 heartbeats.
7 week US showed 1 heartbeat and 1 small area of "bleeding" which the Dr said may have been the second baby being reabsorbed by my uterus.
8 and 9 week ultrasounds showed 1 heartbeat, but no growth - was told I was miscarrying at 8 weeks, scheduled a D&C after the 9 week appt.
Had a D&C at 10 weeks. Testing confirmed that it was a partial molar pregnancy.
My Dr recommended that we wait 1 year until resuming TTC because of the increased chance of uterine cancer that is associated with molar pregnancies. I had to go in for blood work periodically to check for increased hormone levels (i.e.cancer.)
At 10 month appt, I was given the ok to start TTC. Got a BFP on cycle 3 after that (2nd cycle working with the RE.) Our baby girl was born shortly thereafter.

@HappyBluebird: My last pregnancy was a MMC with twins. They did the pathology afterwards to see what the cause was but to do that they told me they had to get live cells to regrow. They couldn't find any/regrow any, so I had no results effectively.

Don't know if it's the same as having no fetal dna, but I was told they couldn't tell me the genders.

@Rockies11: Though it looks as though maybe its a partial molar pregnancy from the info I found, that's another confusing thing, I have had absolutely no problem symptoms. I had no bleeding, only minor morning sickness (I never actually threw up), no pain, etc. It seems as though I might be a odd case.

@Trailmix: Thank you and I'm sorry your friend was also in a circumstance like this. That's what I seem to have come across while looking for information. Having to wait 6 months - 1 year. To be completely honest we weren't really sure when we would try again, probably early next year, but being told we HAVE to wait that long just adds to the already crappy situation we are in

@blackbird: The other thing too about molar pregnancies is that they almost always have lots of spotting and very very severe morning sickness - that was why they were investigating it in my case.

@HappyBluebird: I'm so sorry for your loss. One of my very best friends had a molar pregnancy but she went in for her first visit at 8 weeks and there was no HB, a bit different from what happened to you. Unfortunately, she was told to wait at least 6 months after the hcg levels have gone down to zero (something about the increased risk of it happening again) before TTC again :(

@FliegepilzHut: we declined the generic testing so I'm assuming it's just routine pathology. You're right, It sounds very similar. Thanks for the information, gonna try to keep the worrying to a minimum until we get more results

@HappyBluebird: This is outside of my area (and experience)...but was it routine pathology or were they planning to get genetic testing as well? After my first loss (a missed m/c -- saw HB at 7weeks, stopped growing at 8, found out at 11weeks), they didn't see any distinctive fetal tissue on pathology...but my OB said that's pretty common. That sounds a lot like your situation. I would try not to worry (it seems pretty improbable that you had a molar pregnancy) and wait on the final results.

ETA: Just read up on partial molar pregnancy...I just hope your final pathology report comes back quickly, so you get a definitive answer and next steps.

@blackbird: @Rockies11: Thanks very much for the responses, I appreciate it. From my googling I did come across the partial molar pregnancy but I've stopped googling for now because it was just depressing. Seemed to say that we would need to wait quite some time before TTC again. I think I may stay off google until I get to speak with the Dr about the circumstances.

@blackbird: I'm very sorry that you also had a miscarriage, its such an unbelievably hard thing to deal with

this was a concern in my first pregnancy, and from my recollections a partial molar pregnancy could have an early heartbeat.

I'm so sorry you're going through this :(

My very first pregnancy had a confirmed heartbeat at 6 weeks or so. I miscarried at 12 weeks and no fetus was ever found to test. One of my specialists made a comment about the body reabsorbing it. Another commented it may have been a blighted ovum, which made no sense with a HB. All that to say that our bodies do weird things and maybe something got absorbed on your end? It's weird but possible I guess

A little back story.. I went in at 8 weeks and had an ultrasound where we saw the heartbeat and things looked fine. The dr got two different measurements (5 days apart) but one of the measurements was 1 day less than I thought I should be based on charting. Then, on Sept 22nd, I went in for what should have been our 12 week appointment. We had an ultrasound to confirm dates and unfortunately there was no heartbeat and the baby had stopped growing some time right after our first appointment. I had a d&c on the 25th.

Today I received a call from the Dr.. The pathology report came back as not decisive and suggested a molar pregnancy as there was no fetal DNA. I asked the dr if we would have still seen the heartbeat with a molar pregnancy as the way she described it made it seem as though there would be no fetus. She implied that it sounded abnormal and to come in for HCG blood test tomorrow and also to wait for the additional pathology testing results to come back in a few weeks.

Is it abnormal to see the heartbeat and the baby and then have no fetal DNA after the D&C? I should add that the dr said she did an ultrasound during the D&C and everything looked clear.

Thanks very much for anyone's help & I'm very sorry for this very long post.
