@wheres_c: I read it and yeah, I think I'll skip the cereals and start with veggies then introduce fruit. I had no idea!

@wheres_c: that does sound expensive, but they are so worth it :)

Whichever cereals you choose though, I think mixing with water will be easiest.

@MarieJ: even though I, myself am vegetarian, I plan on letting LO have organic grass fed meats occasionally for iron.

He's going to be one expensive baby!

@MerryC: rice cereal will generally increase the chance of constipation. My LO is constipated already without it. :)

Also studies show that white rice cereal can increase the risk of childhood obesity as well as cause insulin sensitivity, certain type of cancer risks etc.

It's fairly progressive thinking and studies, and is a hot topic of debate. New school pediatricians are recommending whole grains or fruits/veggies as first foods, compared to old school pediatricians who still reccommend rice cereal.

I would caution you to read the link @arden posted, and google a little more and make up your own mind as its a personal choice. If you do decide to go the rice cereal route I would reccommend looking at brown rice like this sprout product: http://www.sproutbabyfood.com/cereal.php?sku=WGBR

@MarieJ: My LO isn't that old yet, but when the time comes I plan to feed her plenty of iron-rich foods (sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, lentils, beans, etc) with Vitamin C rich foods (vit C helps iron absorption). I'll also still be breastfeeding, so she will continue to receive iron through my milk.
I don't plan to give her iron drops unless she actually tests low.

There is a good thread about skipping cereals here:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/anyone-not-doing-rice-cereal#post-339547

And here is some good information on iron supplementation from KellyMom:
http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron/

@Arden: thanks for the article and advice! Since you skipped cereals, how did baby get the recommended amount of iron? Iron drops?

@MarieJ: We did oatmeal for breakfast for the first couple of months. But once he started eating stuff with more flavor and texture he stopped eating the oatmeal.

@MarieJ: I'm also in the "no cereals" camp, so personally I'd just skip them altogether and feed her fruits and veggies! Like @KT326 said, cereals will sometimes cause constipation in breast fed babies, but there are some other downsides too, nutritionally. Here's a good article about it -

Our pediatrician told us rice cereal can constipate a breast fed baby so she recommended oatmeal instead. I would either mix it with some water or veggie/fruit puree. Our daycare doesn't allow us to leave formula there, everything needs to be prepared by us.

@MerryC: thanks for that! I could see if just adding water works, but the instructions say only add water to
It for Toddlers. I wonder if it'll be okay for her? Hmmm.

@wheres_c: what would rice cereal do if she had it everyday? Again, I'm clueless so all info/input will help me out.

Are you sure you want rice cereal daily? I'll admit im in the no rice cereal ever camp.
Regardless I would just add water.....not formula, and limit the frequency of cereal compared to veggies.

You could see if she'll take the cereal just mixed with water. My kids never really cared if I added formula or breastmilk to it. Then it's one less thing to worry about. Or add a spoon of the veg or something to flavor it. But, in short, I don't think you should stress out about pumping more for mixing with solids.

I'm not consistent about when I give cereal vs fruit/veg, but if you are at home and lo is responding well, it doesn't hurt to ask daycare to stick to it.

I'm breastfeeding and LO has just started daycare. We're currently doing rice cereal and a few veggies. I haven't sent any rice cereal or food to daycare yet, but was planning on doing so tomorrow.

My questions are: should I pump extra breast milk to send to mix with the rice cereal or is it okay if I send a can of formula specifically for that and that only? I'm currently pumping just enough to cover her bottles and don't want to stress myself out trying to pump more.

Also, should I request they do cereal in the morning and veggies/fruits in the afternoon?

I'm so clueless. Any advice?
