@Adira: neither did I! I mean, my son eats pretzels, crackers, chicken nuggets, dry cheerios, cereal bars, etc...but to the untrained eye, it looks like he is chewing. He's really just mashing.

@looch: Well, I don't THINK he has an issue chewing, because he eats breads and crackers just fine and I can see that he chews them. But I guess I don't really know what's going on. It seems like a texture issue because he'll only eat DRY foods... although the blueberries and peas I offered him were fairly dry and he wouldn't eat them either, so I don't know...

Our situation was extreme, but my ped advised me not to fuss over my son's food and what he ate for three days and then he'd eat for sure....turns out he has an oral motor issue and has trouble chewing. So, if you need to, get an eval by an oral motor specialist. They can tell in a minute if there is a problem or not.

@Adira: the nights that R doesn't eat much. I will offer a pouch and sometimes she doesn't want those. She doesn't wake up in the middle of the night to eat. And usually is fine with being up for 30 mins before she gets breakfast (day care days)

@Sparkler: I will certainly be discussing it with my doctor at his next appointment in a couple weeks! I've actually thought about just stopping offering the purees, but he's always been on the lower side of the weight chart, so I was nervous about not feeding him! Especially because he will eat a LOT of purees when offered.

@Mamaof2: I second using utensils. Sometimes if my young toddler is not eating a food we haven't had in awhile, I will put a piece of a fork and give it to her and she will start gobbling it up.

Maybe this is bad advice so check with your dr in case there is a medical issue causing him to not eat, but what about just stopping with the purees altogether? With weaning from bottles my kids took way more from the straw cup once the bottles were packed up!

@Mamaof2: Nope! If I try to offer him a piece of whatever, he clamps his lips shut and turns his head away! I haven't offered a fork/spoon yet... do you think that might help?

@littlebug: I can certainly try a fork/spoon, but I'm not sure that is the issue, haha! It won't hurt to try though!

@Mamaof2: I was going to suggest the same thing. Lately D has this thing where he WANTS to eat with a fork/spoon. Unless it's clearly a "finger food," like a sandwich or a chicken nugget, he wants a utensil. He throws a fit until I give him one.

@looch: My son is totally weird and hates everything I've cooked in the crock pot. He seems to be anti-crock-pot-texture, which sucks, cuz I cook crock pot meals a lot.

@Smurfette: It's rough because I just can't get him to really get into table foods. Like I give him banana pieces and he won't touch them, but then give him banana puree and he'll scarf it down! Gahh!

@wonderstruck: He's shown interest in our food, but it seems only to play with it or to just offer it to me. I couldn't seem to get him to actually eat any.

And he's DEFINITELY hungry because he'll eventually get fed up with playing with the food on his tray and/or throwing it on the floor and then will scarf down 3-4 purees (9-12 oz)!!

I think this age they are just picky. R throws food on the floor that last week she loved. It is a crap shoot every day if she will eat or not.

@Adira: Maybe try the mesh feeder with a really ripe banana. Or a super soft peach...things that are a bit softer naturally and will squish into his mouth from the mesh.

Hmmm I don't know how helpful any of my advice will be since I was lucky enough to have a LO who loves solids and will eat anything, but does he show interest when you're eating foods? if he does, then you could just feed him some off your plate when he acts like he wants some, and start putting it on his tray once he likes it enough.

I would probably keep switching it up in hopes that you'll find more stuff he'll eat. And maybe you could sneak some fruits into the grains? So if he likes pancakes, mix in bananas or blueberry or something like that when you're making them.

Landon only throws food on the floor when he's full, so my only other thought is to make sure you're doing this when he's hungry and not right after a bottle or something.

One thing you can try is meat that's cooked in a crockpot or cooked in liquid, it breaks down the meat so the texture is more acceptable to young children.

@2PeasinaPod: Yes, he eats chunky purees just fine! We feed him as many "level 3" foods as I can find and he's totally fine with it. He does NOT like avocado though. :( But maybe I could try doing the same thing with banana. He's eating banana a couple times just cut up, but now he won't touch it, but he likes banana puree, so maybe I can try mashing it so it's chunky and then making it more and more chunky.

Have you tried chunkier purees yet? Does he like avocado? That was one of S's first finger foods, but it also took him a while. He wasn't used to texture and he would gag a ton.

We tried mashing up avocado so that it was chunkier so that he got used to having some sort of other texture in his mouth other than a puree. It started to work gradually as we kept offering it to him, and he eventually started eating it less mashed until he ate a whole piece. We also used to have to cut puffs in quarters for him before he got used to eating a full one.

You can also try this with a lot of other things...or they have mesh feeders that can help him to get use to textures!

Xander (14 months) is pretty terrible with table foods. As in, he mostly won't eat them. He'll only really eat grains (bread, english muffins, bagels, crackers, etc).

So lately I've just been trying to always offer him an array of table foods prior to breaking out the purees. I usually offer a meat, a grain, and some fruits and veggies. He pretty much doesn't touch them except to maybe thrown them on the floor (or if the grain is something he's familiar with, he'll just eat that). Sometimes he even seems freaked out to have the food in front of him and seems to be trying to get rid of it.

I'm assuming I should just keep offering, but does anyone have any advice? Should I offer him the same thing multiple days in a row or switch it up every day? I've also tried eating with him to show him that it's food and stuff, but that doesn't seem to work - it's like he knows I'm trying to trick him, haha.
