Our four month sleep regression was pretty much two weeks of hell. She went from sttn to waking every 1.5-2 hours. I nursed just about every time, and she did go back to sttn easily. Now she maybe wakes once per night to eat.

@SproutBee: we swaddle weaned when her sleep was so bad it couldn't get worse. It seemed to help after the first night since she could suck in her hands at least.

@Foodnerd81: M has been doing this thing where when I pick her up she does that moving mouth side to side thing on my cheek (like she's trying to find my nipple!). So that leads me to believe she's actually hungry. She woke up 3 times last night, but slept until 8:45, so it actually wasn't terrible. We'll see what tonight holds...

@SproutBee: We went ahead and swaddle weaned. It's been a shockingly smooth translation, but my LO was never particularly fond of the swaddle and was busting out of it every night so I think she was just ready to be weaned.

Anyone have thoughts on whether I should swaddle-wean during this presumed 4 month regression? He's not rolling yet, but I know we'll probably need to wean him anyway in the upcoming month or two. Should I just do it now while his sleep is bad? Hopefully he'll eventually find comfort sucking his hands?

I am right behind you and I think DS is starting this as well. He is making a bunch of huge developmental changes - he's learning how to roll over, he's sucking his hand/thumb and he's trying really hard to talk to us, making all kinds of noises. At night we can see him on the monitor rolling around in his crib and thankfully he will just start sucking his thumb most of the time and go back down, but I am afraid once he gets better at rolling over he might flip onto his stomach and start crying constantly (he hates being on his belly).

I have no idea what to do so I'm not much help, but I think if DS starts waking up more frequently just to 'talk' then we might try CIO, but if he really needs saving we will continue to go in there until the phase passes.

Once again our babies are sleep twins! I'm struggling with whether or not to feed her since she doesn't seem that hungry and is just fussing but not full on crying.

I guess it is the 4 month sleep regression though. Atl easy it's normal?

That's exactly what it looked like for us! The multiple wake ups lasted around 10 days and then she settled into a pattern of 2 wake ups per night providing I feed her when she wakes (we were down to 1 before the regression). If I don't (formula) feed her, she will wake an hour or so later so I think she's actually hungry - but in the clutches of the regression she needed her dummy to go back to sleep.

This is me! At least I hope it is, because that means it should pass. My LO is 3.5 months and I know he is capable of sleeping 6-9 hours in his initial stretch, but this week his initial stretch is only 3 hrs, and then the rest of the night he's up every 1.5 - 2 hrs. It's killing me! Nursing puts him back to sleep, but it's very fitful. Really hoping it's just the regression and not a new normal!

I'm hesitant to sleep train right now, too... But we'll see how much longer I can tolerate it! We're going to visit the in-laws for 2 weeks over the holidays, so I may re-evaluate once we get home.

Sounds like good advice from your Pedi ;-)

The sucking reflex is a young baby's primary form of self-regulation and breastmilk is full of relaxing chemicals, hence why it can be so effective at knocking a baby out! Some babies also just need the closeness and comfort of mum :-)

Hang in there Mama, this too shall pass.

@lawbee11: our "4" months (it really started just after 3 months) was similar, but worse. We were having 6 or so wakeups a night. 5-6 VERY long and difficult weeks later, she is finally starting to get better.

Before the regression, she typically slept 8-2, then 2-5, then would start waking up every hour on the hour until we got her up for the day at 8. During the regression, she's sleep 8-10, 10-12, 12-1:30, etc. It was HORRIBLE.

Lately she's sleeping 8-12:30 or so straight, then 12:30-4ish, then 4-7. So. BETTER. STill not great for us parents, since we go to bed around 10:30, so we still get wakeups pretty often, but it's better than it was before.

We didn't really hit a regression until 5.5 months, but it sounds similar to what I'm going through with my 6 month old. It's like she forgot how to put herself back to sleep, when she used to know how. We are working on putting her down more awake to hopefully help her through this. I still nurse at her night wakings if I think she's hungry, but sometimes it doesn't work to get her to sleep anymore.

We experienced some sort of regression from about 15-18 weeks. DD became very restless at night, constantly just wanting to engage and play. Her naps were a joke, too - she usually goes down for about 1.5-2.5 hours, twice a day, and I was lucky to see her sleep for 20 minutes.

We just kinda dealt with it, and it thankfully passed before we had to put a plan into action. We bed share at night, and haven't attempted any sleep training, thus far.

I hope it passes, soon, and you all can get some rest!

Well, my LO was always a terrible sleeper so I don't think his 4 month sleep regression was in the norm, but he started waking every two hours and continued doing that for 6 weeks! It was brutal. Always nursed to sleep. We ended up co-sleeping and then started sleep training at 6 months. Now at almost 8 months, we have SERIOUSLY struggled with sleep training and have now decided to go back to co-sleeping. Regardless, I do not regret nursing to sleep - if that's what works for you and your family, that's great. I know it can be really brutal - I wish you the best of luck!!

Sounds exactly like the regression!

A was doing 12 hours STTN no wakes from weeks 11.5-15/16. Then the regression hit and he had at least 3-4 days of multiple wakeups (I nursed at each even though he'd night weaned) and then he was back to his normal sleeping a week later without training.

Good luck! Hope it passes quickly

Yep. This exactly how it looked (looks) for us. We eventually decided to sleep train, but somehow that meant one night of 20 mins of CIO. We were really lucky.

He still has multiple night wakings but will fuss or talk and put himself back down for most of them. He will cry for food usually around 12 and 4. I miss the 8-10 hours of uninterrupted sleep but he goes back down easily after the two night wakings so I guess I shouldn't complain!

M turned 4 months yesterday, and I think we've been dealing with the 4-month sleep regression for the last week or so. She was up 4 times last night (over the course of 12 1/2 hours). Last night was the worst we've had in a longggg time. For the last few weeks she's been getting up twice which I can deal with. But 4 times is hard!! She used to be able to consistently go 7-8 hours before a wakeup. Now her first wakeup is between 3-4 hours (so usually right as I am getting into bed...great!).

She seems to be having the hardest time settling herself. I watch her on the monitor and she is just moving all around in her sleep. She sleeps through a lot of it (I have no idea how). Is this what the 4-month sleep regression looked like for you?

I've been nursing her back to sleep at every waking (she doesn't take a paci). Last night DH went in and tried to rock her back to sleep/walk around with her. But even if she falls asleep on DH she can't seem to settle herself unless I nurse her. He put her down and she immediately just started moving all around.

I talked to her pediatrician about it at her checkup yesterday and he said just to continue nursing her when she wakes and it'll pass soon. I told him I am worried about creating bad habits, and he said not to worry and just keep doing what I am doing.

Did anyone else's baby go through this and eventually stop waking so much without sleep training? I feel like it's too soon to sleep train since the regression started so recently, but I am worried the longer it goes on the harder it's going to be to break it if it does become a habit.
