@HabesBabe: yea I was thinking of getting some kind of mat or something! Transitioning on vacation sounds like one of those things that could be perfect or totally backfire! I'm glad it worked well for you guys.

1. How old was your lo when you transitioned?
--2 1/2... 32ish months?

2. Do you wish you had done it earlier/later?
--Nope, it was perfect timing for us.

3. Did you transition during a good or bad sleeping period? --Good sleeping period, but we did it on vacation. I felt like she was too big to comfortably sleep in her PnP, so I put the twin mattress on the floor against the wall and had her sleep on it. She loved it! When we got home, we took off the front rail on her crib, so now she's in a toddler bed.

4. Any tips for transitioning a 17 month old?
--Oh man, that sounds rough. I guess I would wait until the last possible minute-- place some pillows or a mat on the floor in case she does climb out and falls.

5. How bad was the newfound freedom? I'm picturing her sleeping on her chair, the floor, reading all night, etc
--Char is actually really good. She's never gotten out of bed on her own (she will wait until we come in the morning or after her nap to get her), and she rolls around and talks to herself before falling asleep every night, just like when she was in her crib.

Although, we have been lucky because she's a very cautious kid. She's never tried to climb out of her crib, so we technically didn't need to transition her when we did.

@travellingbee: wow that's awesome he sleeps better!

@ValentineMommy: thats hilarious! Lo is very verbal so i think talking it up will help despite her young age, but I'm almost wondering if i shouldn't talk it up and maybe she won't really notice the difference ;)

@dolphin: thanks! I agree she's too young to really understand the "big girl" concept. That's one reason i really dont want to do this yet! Hope the twin bed transition goes smoothly!

@bunnylove08: yea I'd imagine the cosleep transition would be harder. I do look forward to being able to lie with her at bedtime -that's one benefit to the toddler bed over the crib!

I really appreciate all the input! Though it's making me think 2 really is the best age to do this! I'm hoping she eases up on the climbing but I'm not optimistic

we converted when she was 2. we co slept and I just couldn't do it anymore. She had some issues because she wanted to sleep with us, but I would stay with her until she fell asleep. She knew she could always come to our bed if she was scared but would get moved back when she fell asleep. She got use to it and now sleeps in her bed with no problem now. She is 2.5 so it too a little while for her to be okay

1. How old was your lo when you transitioned? 27 months
2. Do you wish you had done it earlier/later? No, I think we did it at a good time.
3. Did you transition during a good or bad sleeping period? It was a good sleeping period. I was afraid of rocking the boat too but it was fine.
4. Any tips for transitioning a 17 month old? Not sure because I don't think my DD was ready to transition that young. She wasn't into the whole "big girl" concept until she was a little older.
5. How bad was the newfound freedom? I was DREADING this! The first two weeks she did get out of bed repeatedly after I put her down. She would walk to her door and call for us and we would have to tuck her back in. But that wore off and now she is really good about staying in her bed after I tuck her in. She never gets up in the middle of the night looking for us. When she wakes up in the morning she will walk to her door and call for us. Overall I think the transition went well and we're planning to transition her to a regular twin bed next month.

Good luck!!

1. How old was your lo when you transitioned? Right around 2 we actually moved him into a toddler bed, although he napped in a toddler bed 2x a week at grandmas for a few months prior to that. He was in the transitioned "toddler bed"/crib conversion thing since 18m.
2. Do you wish you had done it earlier/later? I think we did it at a good time.
3. Did you transition during a good or bad sleeping period? He's always been a good sleeper. I was also afraid of rocking the boat, but he was unphased.
4. Any tips for transitioning a 17 month old? Talk about it for a few weeks before doing it. Even if your LO isn't super verbal, they'll understand to a certain extent that something is going to change.
5. How bad was the newfound freedom? He didn't seem to notice, which I still find kinda funny. He's 27m now and has yet to EVER get out of the bed without us coming into the room. He will call and call for us and won't get up until we're standing right next to him. I'm not sure why, but it's pretty nice lol

25 months, he wasn't climbing out but his sleep was meh so I thought we might try it. Plus I have a bad back and he was getting so heavy to pick up and put in the crib. We took the front off and added a safety rail/net thing. He sleeps better! Through the night almost every night. He never gets out and plays.

@2littlepumpkins: this is exactly why I wanted to wait a while! I was hoping to let her pick out her big girl bed (whereas if we do it now we'd just convert the crib), and i thought her being older would help. But then again, i thought there was at least a chance that transitioning her now would be less eventful because she's still young enough to take it in stride. Somehow I'm not sure i believe that though!

1. 2.5
2. So far, no! I honestly can't picture this having gone well earlier because she was SO active in her sleep, and I don't think it needed to be later because she was starting to climb out and just didn't seem as comfortable as before in her crib.
3. Relatively bad, but not bad. Just earlier wakeups and things were a little off because we just moved. It's been only two days but she seems to be sleeping better. She's slept at least an hour more than usual per night.
4. Sorry, my dd didn't transition til much later, over a year later! I *think* some things that helped in our case were letting her come to pick the bed and the mattress and see us put it together, getting her ready for it.. but I don't know if that would have made a difference at 17 months.
5. So far it hasn't been too bad. I did have to go in there and threaten to close the door (she likes it open) if she didn't lay down for a nap- she was standing on her bed reaching for something and playing with the blinds on the window.

@Smurfette: haha the mornings are already early over here! But I almost think giving her a little freedom to play might help that. She wakes up and leans over the crib talking to her stuffed animals around the room lol. Maybe if she could play with them she'd leave us alone a little longer (wishful thinking I know)!

1. 25 months. She was starting to climb out. She never got all the way out cause we just happened to watching the monitor all the times.
2. Nope
3. Nothing has changed. She fights bedtime all the time. She does seem to wake up earlier but I think it was due to pooping early morning. Sleeping normal now.
4. Just talk up big girl bed. Get the rails so she won't roll out at night.
5. It honestly isn't bad. 90% of the time she stays in bed. The mornings are more likely she will get out. Then she stands by the door waiting on us.

I was planning on skipping the toddler bed entirely, but the past week lo suddenly has caught the climbing bug and now I'm terrified she'll jump out! We are debating whether to convert the crib so i have questions!

1. How old was your lo when you transitioned?
2. Do you wish you had done it earlier/later?
3. Did you transition during a good or bad sleeping period? I can see benefits to each, but right now she's in a good period and I'm so reluctant to rock the boat. But i also am terrified of her jumping!
4. Any tips for transitioning a 17 month old?
5. How bad was the newfound freedom? I'm picturing her sleeping on her chair, the floor, reading all night, etc.

Thanks!!
