@MamaJ: i think it's because they are afraid they will eat less at meals. Personally, it has not been an issue for us. :)

@hilsy85: yeah, we had to make a routine of it! I would bring her in, change her, we would go close her shade, I'd turn on her seahorse and hand her her binky (in my arms), give her a hug and a kiss and lay her down, then hand her her blanket. lol. it sounds more of a process than it is ;)

@hilsy85: did your pediatrician say why not to give the milk at meals? Just out of curiosity. I assumed I would just give it during meals.

DS isn't quite there yet but will be soon. We nurse until drowsy unless I'm not home so I'm afraid of weaning but want to around a year!

@sorrycharlie: you wohm right? So how did she use to get bm or formula? Just use the same vessel and start mixing it a little bit of cows milk at a time. Or did you try that already? That and MSPI is why I mixed vs cold turkey.

Some tips: LO vastly preferred milk in a open cup. When i started doing that is when she drank it a lot more.
She loves ice cold milk. Literally I put 2 ice cubes in it and that way it can stay out longer too while she sips from it while playing.

@birdofafeather: nope, I don't give any less. In the last month or so her milk intake has increased immensely but hasn't nursed or eaten any less. Self weaning is not looking probable....

@NovBaby1112: ah ok...the pedi said since we rarely use bottles now there's no point in using them for WCM, so I think we're going to go right the straw cup for milk. I am seriously so jealous ( but so happy for you! :) ).

@MsLipGloss: thanks!! I figure at some point he'll either have to drink it, or eat a pound of cheese/yogurt a day (which I'm sure he would love, lol). I will keep trying--haven't REALLY tried too hard yet so shouldn't be discouraged.

@sorrycharlie: @hilsy85: I just wanted to say I am sorry you are struggling. Solids are a big struggle for us, and my Ped told me that sometimes it takes offering a new food (or drink) 15 times before your LO will accept it. I don't know about you, but I didn't offer my LO anything new more than a few times before moving on to something else. I do it now though, and am starting to have more successes. (((hugs))) mamas!

@hilsy85: i hope it happens for you guys too! it did make me wonder if she was really filling up at bedtime on nursing alone, as compared to the bottle, since seriously very soon after transitioning to whole milk/bottle, she started STTN completely and sleeping in until 7:30. oh and as far as the nap things goes, I also used to nurse LO to sleepy and when she went on her nursing strike/early weaning, I was worried how she would go down for naps. I give her a bottle of milk in the glider, and she gets very sleepy still and ready for her nap. I dont think the sippy/straw cup would have the same effect for us. we use the sippy cup with milk during lunch and at random times though.

we are super struggling with this. LO never took a bottle, so I had no idea what to do. She obviously isn't going to sit and chug 6-8 oz of milk from a sippy at once..she doesn't even do that with water!

and..she hates whole milk. will. not. drink it.

but, she'll drink a little skim (like, an oz over the course a day...). so I don't really know what to do.

@hilsy85: I only mixed it because LO rejected WCM at first, and because I work full time, I couldn't be home to keep offering it to her (LO was at home with my MIL until she recently transitioned to daycare, and, to make a long story short, I just couldn't depend on my MIL to work with her to get her to take the WCM, let alone WCM in a sippy, which would have been my preference).

Some people purposely introduce cows milk it in a sippy or straw cup so that there is a separate association.

I wouldn't mix it with BM unless you were pumping or had a freezer stash you wanted to work through, so I am guessing you need to do whole "servings" of cows milk (sorry if i am making no sense).

@locavore_mama: ah ok...our pedi suggested replacing milk when we usually nurse, which is before naps. No idea how I can do that, since he nurses to sleep pretty much, and I feel like a straw cup won't relax him the same way.

@hilsy85: no, LO has been on one nap for ages and when she was on 2 bottles it was around 9 and 2? I think they give her milk at snack times at school.

When I'm home I give her milk at meal times. And occasionally throughout the day. It doesn't / hasn't affected her meal intake.

@mrsjyw: yes the wcm is cold when we mix it with her pumped milk, but the pumped milk has usually been in the fridge for a day so it's cold too. But now we don't even mix anymore and she does fine with 100% whole milk. She has never prefered to have her pumped milk warm tho, she has drank it cold and warm without a preference, , but we still warm it a little so it's not super cold. .

We transitioned to CM at 12 months. At first I would mix half BM with half CM - then I would slowly increase the CM until it was all CM. We also ditched the bottle. CM was given in a sippy.
The 1st cup was given upon waking - rather than nurse I would exclaim "Lets go get a drink!" and rush downstairs to get the sippy.

As a side - my DS had a dairy allergy so we moved him to coconut milk the same way I switched my DD to Cows milk - half and half.

So we didn't completely swap one bottle to all WCM. We did a slow transition; half due to her MSPI so I wanted to take it easy. And the other half I thought it would make the transition easier. We mainly started like 1/4 WCM and 3/4 BM in a bottle. Then slowly to a full bottle.

Daycare gave bottles at the same time as they did before.

Transitioning to WCM had no effect on her sleep!

We still nurse at wake up and bed time unless DH puts her down.

ETA: After we fully transitioned to WCM we started bottle weaning. Again one bottle at a time. When she was all straw we worked on open cups. By about 16 months she was 75% open cups.

@Tidybee: Yep. I only ever used premade formula . . . I just added the milk to it (the formula). I think the reason the instructions say not to add water is so that you don't end up diluting the formula and deprive your LO of calories/nutrients. Whole milk is a substitution, and still adds calories and nutrients, so I didn't worry about it!

We have had a very easy transition to Whole milk... We did half and half to start - we were on formula -- at night we are still doing half formula and half milk just until the formula runs out!

We have just noticed a change in poops! More of them! Also - he is def hungrier for food.

But he loves the milk! We are still doing bottles for now as he will not drink out of the 5 different sip/straw cups we have gotten.

Since L and C are so similar, I don't think he will like the milk
C has tried it probably 15-20 times, and each time, once she realizes what it is, she opens her mouth and lets it all spill out. I feel like we'll never get her to like it.
