We started at about 2weeks pp. We have a variety of brands all of team are one size. I like greenbees and rump apropos the most. Both brands were good for my baby (he is off the charts for weight and 90+% for everything else). Plus, greenbees diapers are $6 for solids.

Those sound great. My guy was 7 pounds 15 ounces when he arrived, but then he got down to much closer to 7 pounds before going back to birth weight. I used them for about 6 weeks. He still fit them at 6 weeks but he was peeing big pees by then, which they couldn't handle reliably.

Adding a pic I took of his bellybutton (happens to show the diaper) around 2 weeks old.

@red_seattle: Thanks! I've bought a couple Flips so we'll have an option for the biodegradable insert as well. Figured they would be fabulous for travel.
@MsMini: Thank you for your suggestions! I am still on the fence about newborn sizes, will have to chat more with my DH about it.
@cvbee: Thanks for your input on the newborn diapers! It would be sooo adorable to see them in teeny cloth diaps. I picked up a few Peachy Baby's (made locally, AI2's!) and they fit starting at 6lbs, hoping they will be sufficient for our LO. How big was your LO when born and how long did your newborns last for?

@lolabee: I used the Grovia AIOs. I only bought enough for 24 hours (maybe 18?) and committed to washing daily. This was fine for me, but they took 2 cycles in the dryer to dry; whereas pocket diapers are bone dry in one cycle. If I were to do it all over again, I'd might not choose the same diaper (maybe I'd do fitteds with covers) because of the dryer time, but that's just what you get with an AIO organic cotton diaper. (I currently have one fitted cotton AIO and it needs some air drying after the dryer cycle too). But I was a little scared of some of the cloth options that I didn't understand, so the AIO to start with worked for me at the time. I am also happy that I splurged on the NB diapers because it was so cute to see him in his tiny little diaper.

@lolabee: For newborn diapers I would probably go for lil joeys by rumparooz, my one size of choice is fuzzibunz. My girlfriend did like fuzzibunz sized diapers in small for her newborn though.

@lolabee: Yep, I'm happy with gDiapers. I like that we have the flushable/biodegradable insert option for when we travel. I like the velcro tab closures vs. snaps. I like the fit (they fit my small fry Toddler X well). I like that they're more reliable overall than disposables. And yeah, they're super cute too.

@LittleGBee: Thank you for the link. Eeeks! I didn't know about the supposed link to cancer from baby powder I will be researching that for sure. I guess a lot of the issues caused by disposables will be automatically eliminated with the use of cloth!

@lolabee: We have this wet bag in both medium and large.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WWIAP8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

I have a small travel wet bag for the diaper bag and I sometimes throw the medium one in there if we're doing a day trip. I also have two large wet bags because they air dry along with the shells, so it's nice to have another wet bag to put the new dirty diapers into. The diapers won't wait for laundry!

Honestly, we got a bit of push back from friends, but once they see our system and how easy it is, they're suddenly quite interested. My husband's co-workers threw us a baby shower and scoffed at our CDing sarcastically saying "Ha, that will last about two weeks!" Whatever. Poop is poop and you're dealing with it no matter what. There have only been two diapers where I was like "oh man, a disposable would be REALLY nice right about now!" but I sucked it up for the cause. Besides, husband-man is the head of the sustainable department at his engineering firm...gotta practice what you preach!

When we notice any redness beginning to flare up we throw on some CD friendly homemade ointment and that always seemed to kick it. We didn't use baby powder because of the supposed link to cancer or something, and the wicking material on the diapers does a great job at keeping them dry.

Also, starting around 6 months she woke up more so we started using throw-aways at night, it seemed to help lengthen her sleeps. We also use that time to slather on some aquaphor to keep her bottom rash free. We're still kinda searching for a good nighttime diaper.

@LittleGBee: exactly what I was just saying to DH - basically bragging about how wonderful the HB ladies are!!

The little newborn disposables are sooo tiny - hard not to oooh and ahh over them. Good to know about liking different diapers for different reasons, I'm hoping this happens for us and we make use of everything I've purchased. If not I guess I'll just sell 'em!

Which wet bag do you use? Good tip on adding the towel, will definitely try that. Ewww to cold wet pee lol! That's awesome your DD only got one diaper rash - so I guess no need for diaper creams? Do you use baby powder? That is a question I haven't asked, is that allowed with cloth?

Thank you for your response!

@sarac: Thank you for that! :) I have ordered some cloth wipes but will remind myself not to beat myself up if it doesn't jive. I reallllly want cloth diapering to work out for us, I feel (speaking without experience of course!) like if I commit to it and all it entails all should be good.

@MsMini: Hmmm...this is exactly what I was contemplating about last night when I put in my order. I should probably order a few newborns. Fuzzibunz is your recommendation?

@cvbee: Which brand of newborns did you use? How many did you have? Thanks for easing my (actually DH's) mind about the odor/stains. I'm hoping once the people that matter to us have some experience with cloth they will change their minds, or even if they don't they just keep their negative comments to themselves.

@lolabee: You have so many great responses! I love CD-ing and I think it's so much easier than people think. Sometimes, when life is overwhelming though, I take a day hiatus to get caught up on life and laundry. It helps, and we really like the Honest Co. diapers.

And now for your questions:

-when did you switch to cloth? Did you use right off the hop?
We started on week 2 once her nubby fell off. I admit, I was sad to see her skinny little bottom leave those teeny-tiny pants.

-did you start out with something like the AppleCheeks starter kit or just do a full stash?
I get the worry about fit, but we started out with a full stash of BumGenius 3.0 and 4.0 and BumGenius Flips that we got from our baby showers. They both served their purpose, and I like them each for different reasons.

-do you use a storage sac/wet bag or cloth diaper pail?
Wet bags all the way! So worth the investment.

-what do you recommend for stain and/or odor eliminator?
The sun is the best stain and odor remover. But I haven't had to deal with the CD stink yet (it's been a year now) and I think that's mostly because I'm careful to use a lot of water when washing.

-detergent recommendation?
We love Rockin' Green stuff! It smells delicious and it's fabulous.

-do you think a sprayer is necessary? Liners?
You know, I have liners but I haven't used them. I know when she typically poops and I put her in a Flip diaper to save the BumGenius pocket shell. I have a sprayer and I use it often. It takes a bit to get used to the pressure (poop flying everywhere!) but once you get used to it, it's great. We didn't start putting the poop into the toilet until she started solids though, so it's something you could wait on.

-any tips and tricks for washing?
Water, water, water. Wash every other day to keep the stink away, add a wet towel to trick those frontloader washers into thinking there's more weight in there so they give you more water. We do a cold rinse and spin, and a hot wash with an additional hot rinse. I also have a pair of gloves that I use only for CD stuff, for some reason, cold wet pee is so much more gross than the warm ones. ;)

Have fun! I love how much money it saves us and our daughter has only gotten one diaper rash in her first year of life.

-when did you switch to cloth?
When we got home from the hospital. Was planning to do cloth in hospital but baby was born a bit earlier and I wasn't ready, but I'm glad we did disposables in the hospital for the ease, since I was in there for a few days. He was in NBs for about 6 weeks. They still fit, but didnt absorb enough pee (he's a prolific pee boy) so I had to switch to the 'big boy diapers' at that point.

-did you start out with something like the AppleCheeks starter kit or just do a full stash? I started with one type of newborns and a variety of OS that I didn't use til later. Then I bought more of the OS diapers that worked best for us. (BG 4.0s)

-do you use a st,orage sac/wet bag or cloth diaper pail?
Hanging wet bag by Sling Sisters.

-what do you recommend for stain and/or odor eliminator?
I remember being so worried about this. Seriously not important. For BGs you will add bleach once a month and that eliminates the 'microfibre stink' that creeps up. For my newborn cotton AIOs, they did stain, but putting them in the sun was magic. I didn't really care about the stains though. All the diapers I have now barely stain.

-detergent recommendation?
Rockin Green

-do you think a sprayer is necessary? Liners?
Diaper sprayer is great now that we have solid poop. I do plan to buy liners for when we travel. Luckily he has his major poop first thing in the morning, so I don't need to worry about poop when we are out during the day.

-any tips and tricks for washing?
It is not as hard as it seems when you read about it. Don't use too much detergent. The rockin Green tells you how much to use and it seems right for us.

And yes, when I told people about our cloth choice lots of people gave me a hard time. Even still people say "I couldn't deal with the poop", but seriously I think that disposables have more 'leaking poop' issues than cloth, so those people end up 'dealing' with poop all over their stuff, which I never did. I have had lots of FB friends now ask me about cloth and some even switch to it many months into having their babies.

@cvbee: That's interesting, most of my diapers are still on low rise, mostly to help with our skinny leg issue (any larger rise makes the leg holes a bit bigger and we are already on the smallest leg snap in all of our diapers!) His diapers all look like low-riders, so I have to be especially careful to point his penis down!

@MsMini: I meant to tell you that I got leaks when my snap-rise OS diapers were on middle rise. I kept them low rise for a long time. Mid rise was a problem, so I went to full rise and it's much better...for about a month I just needed to pull them 'up' a bit once I got them on

@lolabee: Most newborn dipes are good to around 12 pounds, so they would have lasted about 4 months in our case. I just found we had a lot of fit issues with the one size diapers early on. Also, if you have newborn diapers they accommodate the cord stump so you can start right away. I like the fit of the fuzzibunz best for us. My LO has skinny legs, so being able to independently adjust the leg elastics was essential for avoiding leaks for us. We also have leak issues from the fold in the snap down rise diapers. We started with a variety, and I find I have different uses for all of them, and it is nice to be able to try them all out, because everyones babies are shaped different!

Also, as a tiny note, don't feel like you're doing it wrong if you use disposable wipes. I've never ever liked the cloth ones, so I don't even bother. I also use disposables at night, just for the quick morning change, honestly. Don't feel like you have to be 100% all in or nothing.

@ValentineMommy: Thanks for the suggestion! I bit the bullet last night and bought 5 BumGenius Elementals - I couldn't resist, there was a sale ;), 2 BumGenius 4.0's and 2 Flip's. It sounds like you have an amazing start up stash, a little jealous! They will be so pretty sitting in the drawer waiting to be used lol!

@c.sassy: I am excited to hear you liked your Elementals best - I bought 5 last night. If you happen to be in Canada there is a sale on enfant style. :)

@Mrs.B: Sounds like a nice stash! What do you think of the Flips?

@sarac: Thank you for the tips! I ordered 4 different types, hopefully one will be a perfect fit. Got the Rockin' Green too, by the sounds of things it's definitely the way to go.

@mewtill: That is wonderful! I had to build my case to my DH...he hadn't even seen a cloth diaper - of any style so it didn't occur to him as an option. I think it's the poop that kinda freaks him out. lol

@lolabee: DH had younger siblings who were cloth diapered with safety pins, so he said anything but the ones you have to fold yourself. He was on board for the usual reasons: environmental, financial, health for baby's bum. He even suggested cloth wipes! So, yes he likes them :)

We put mine in cloth at about week two. I had them all ready, and just thought I would try it when I felt up to it. Started one day and never looked back.

I'd really suggest thrifting a few different kinds, or buying, or trying one of those trials. I picked a brand I liked (gdiapers) that turned out not to fit my girl very well. But I've already invested in them, and my husband likes them, so we keep buying the bigger sizes, even though I think she'll need something else eventually.

You do not need a sprayer or liners until your baby goes to lots of solids. Breastmilk poop just washes out. I'd suggest a cloth diaper specific detergent (like Rockin Green) to avoid buildup. But don't stress about the crazy wash cycles - I wash mine on hot, dry on hot. Mine have a few slight stains, but that's it.

-when did you switch to cloth? Did you use right off the hop? (I am thinking to make the switch after mec poops are done with)
We started at birth using gdiapers newborn dips.

-did you start out with something like the AppleCheeks starter kit or just do a full stash? (worried about fit - as of the moment I'm thinking of having a combination of AppleCheeks & BumGenius)
I started with a stash of gdiapers but I hated them and switched to pocket dips. I now have 24 Minky Kawaii's(cheap but I love them), 7 Bumgenius 4.0's(plan to get more), 4 Bumgenius Flips, and a few WAHM dips I bought on Etsy.

-do you use a st,orage sac/wet bag or cloth diaper pail?
I use a garbage can with a lid and waterproof washable laundry bag.
-what do you recommend for stain and/or odor eliminator?
sunning andwe haven't had any issues with smell.

-detergent recommendation?
I use All Free andClear

-do you think a sprayer is necessary? Liners?
We are still EBF so we aren't to this point yet but will probably use liners.

-any tips and tricks for washing?
Rinse alot.

@lolabee: We got a few different kinds. I really wanted to use as much cotton as possible, so I only got a few pocket diapers (BG 4.0s). Otherwise we got fitteds and prefolds from GMD, a few Swaddlebees, and BG Elementals. The Elementals have turned out to be my favorite and what we use most.

@lolabee: We haven't starting CDing yet (DS isn't here until Feb), but I did a lot of research and most people said to buy different ones, instead of a full stash.

We've got a bunch of Bumgenius 4.0's, a few Elementals and Freetimes, Charlie Banana's, Lotus Bumz, Diaper Rite (diaperjunction's store brand), Kawaii, Rumparooz, and quite a few Grovia hybrids. I wanted to try out a variety of types (AIO, AI2, and hybrids) before buying a TON of diapers. But it seems I already have a ton! They are so cute - and once you start buying them, it's hard to stop!

@mewtill: Thank you for the advice, greatly appreciated! I've ordered a starter kit of AppleCheeks so far. Leaning towards a couple BumGenius 4.0's and Elementals. Hopefully out of the three styles we will have a winner. I have a feeling DH will like the AIO's, how did your DH feel about cloth before and after?

@lolabee: when I picked out the rentals I chose both snaps & Velcro (even though I know Velcro doesn't last as well) to see the difference. I also got AIOs an pockets to see the difference. I liked the fuzzibunz a lot, but they didn't have any OS at my local store. I also heard great things about Thirsties from our pediatrician (they're locally made here in CO I think?), but again no OS.
I knew we could only afford to get a stash of one-sized diapers so we ended up with Bumgenius. There was a sale on the Velcro AIOs so we got some of those. I've heard of places that will convert the Velcro to snaps though (modgblog.com linked to someone in one of her cloth diaper posts).
It's probably a good idea to try different brands if you can afford it, but I was scared to buy diapers that I wouldn't end up using.

I have another question, curious if the majority of you bought all one brand to start with or bought a few different ones to test out what you like best?

@MsMini: I'm on the fence about the newborn stash...just because I don't know how big/small our baby will be. What weight are they generally good until? Are the Fuzzibunz your favorite because of fit?
@FutureMrsMcK: Did you AIO OS Bumgenius Freetimes fit right when you changed to cloth? Which out of the two styles do you prefer? Ditto to : I just feel better all around having him/her in them....that is usually my answer to people voicing/eyeballing negative comments!
@Thehistoryofus: I was kind of thinking that about the velcro - would mess up everything in the wash too. Great to hear about Purex working well for you, that's what we currently use. Thank you so much for all of the links - look forward to reading all of them!! Do you order your Grovia liners from Amazon?
@duckduckkristen: Will definitely order some fleece liners and keep my eyes peeled for a diaper pail with a spot for the deodorizers.
@Beebug: I'm with you on cloth or bust as well, am terrified hubs will hate it or I will want to cop out for some reason! So glad to hear you ended up loving it and all worked out for you. Thanks for the link to the detergent, will look into it. I haven't seen the Rockin' Green in any stores in my city, maybe its only in the States. That's too funny about your cousin - I guess everyone just has such preconceived notions about baby things!
@autumnlove: If you were to do it again would you get a variety? After reading these posts I'm thinking to try out maybe 3-4 different brands then pick what I like best. Hilarious that people offer to buy you disposables! One would think if you wanted them you would have bought them yourself in the first place ;)
@c.sassy: Thanks for the links I will read those sites too. More information the better!
@artbee: Playing it by ear makes good sense to me, thinking we may do the same. Hopefully hubs and I will be on the same page! "I was very brave (or stupid)...." I definitely LOL'd about this - my sister thinks it would be silly for me to buy a full stash just on the chance I hate it. Good to know the elementals fit your babe at 2 weeks. Thanks for the link for liners. That has been a question a few people have asked (about traveling) I said I'm not entirely sure as yet but I would guess we'd use disposables because I don't know where I'd wash them!
@Thehistoryofus: My Mom will be SO excited about the coconut oil, she's a big fan!

Thanks again ladies - really appreciate it!
