So I guess I'm not reading labels as closely as I thought! I bought these dairy free, egg free, GF waffles and have been eating those for breakfast- turns out they have soy flour in them! :bummed: so no more of those, hoping that is the cause and I don't have to eliminate anything else! I made an appt with a pediatric GI doctor but they can't see us until February 9

@LovelyPlum: oh I forgot! I also eliminated beef! But I have only been off of beef for about 2 weeks now.

Weird question: do you eat a lot of beef? It turns out that my MSPI baby was also cross-reactive to beef. Apparently, about 5% of kiddos are.

My LO never had blood in her diaper, but her poop was mucousy. Our main "tells" were screaming like the Dickens and near constant projectile vomiting. We discovered the beef when I went away for the weekend and had it several times (we almost never eat it at home). She was also sensitive to wheat, but never in my diet.

She outgrew it at 13 months, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there, Mama!!

@catlady: oh wow, I am so sorry you had to go through all of that, that sounds so rough! I will look into FPIES, thank you for sharing your experience! I know for sure he is milk intolerant, as we tried regular formula once and he projectile vomited everywhere and then went lethargic which was so scary. But the other stuff is stuff I *think* might be affecting him.

@FannyMae: good luck! I hope it turns out to be nothing! our started out green and mucousy but only when he was around 9 weeks did we start noticing blood. I eliminated dairy around 5 weeks bc I had suspicions but wasn't too strict about the hidden dairy, etc. until I saw blood.

@winniebee: thanks for sharing! I'm hopeful that all of this will go away by a year but we'll see!

@AB810: oh wow, that sounds so hard! good for you for being so proactive! hmmm the almond thing made me think- I actually gave up peanut butter and peanuts, but I do have almond milk with my GF/DF cereal....I wonder if that could be it?

@bees_knees: thank you!! that's awesome your son outgrew it by then :) I have been really careful about reading labels but I will definitely triple check things. Also going to start a food diary. To make things more completed though, I EP, so the milk that he drinks is from 1-2 days ago as we cycle through it in the fridge. But hopefully I can still see a pattern....

@hellobeeboston: ugh it sucks! I miss food lol. But I would eat only bananas if I knew what exactly was affecting him! This whole trial and error thing is hard because I don't know exactly what it is. Def going to visit a GI doctor, put in a request to my ped to refer me to one. Glad to hear your sister's baby outgrew all of this though! I can manage for a little while longer! The good thing is it doesn't seem to be affecting him- he's happy, sleeps well, and drinks good...but I know it's causing him gut issues and I don't want to make it worse.

@Pumuckl: hmm interesting...I did read about corn being a common allergen...it's so hard when not eating gluten though to avoid rice and corn! I do eat a lot of oranges- I should keep track of that and see if that could be it.

@MrsADS: omg you poor poor thing!!! that sounds awful! I am similarly stuck in this situation trying to eliminate and breastfeed, because LO refuses to drink Nutramigen and other hypo allergenic formulas. He will take a few sips and then refuse the rest. :bummed: I wonder if the chocolate could be it- I recently made some dairy free/egg free, GF free brownies. Def need to start a food diary!! I am really hoping the GI doctor can help us. I think that sounds like a good plan though, to start by cutting the top 8 (which I am almost doing anyways) and also corn, citrus, tomatoes, and chocolate. Thank you so much for sharing, super helpful!

I'll answer but please don't be discouraged because I think we were a weird case.

1) how long did it take until your LOs diapers were blood free?
- Never. We tested every month from 6 weeks to about 9 months and she always tested positive, no matter how strict my diet was. After 9 months, our pediatrician just stopped testing (not sure why). Visible blood went away after 2-3 days of cutting all dairy and soy (including hidden).

2) was it just dairy and soy, or did they have other sensitivities as well? How did you find out?
I eliminated dairy, soy, nuts, peanuts, eggs, and corn (I think in that order). Because she kept testing positive for blood, I kept eliminating more and more, but our pediatrician originally wouldn't let me add foods back into my diet after I had eliminated them, so I'm not convinced she was reacting to anything other than milk, soy, and probably one other thing that we never figured out. Later (around 6 months), I also briefly eliminated beef, gluten, and legumes but there was no change and I put them back into my diet pretty quickly.

3) when did they outgrow this?
By 14 months, she was able to handle dairy on her own. She might have outgrown it sooner but we had to add the eliminated foods in pretty gradually so we started at around 10 months and it took that long to get everything back into my diet and then test hers.

I'm really sorry you're going through this. No advice (because honestly I think I handled my own LO's case in a pretty terrible way and our pediatrician didn't help). But hugs. You may want to look into FPIES (I didn't hear about it until after we were done but I thought maybe my LO had that, given the fact that we never fully got her well).

My son is almost 5 months and we have been on this rollercoaster for a while now. He's multiple food protein intolerant - milk soy and other stuff too. It is trial and error. The first thing you need to do is get yourself to a good pediatric GI!!! In our experience our pediatrician really doesn't know anything about it.

My son also has severe reflux. We started by just eliminating dairy, although I wasn't doing a good job of eliminating "hidden dairy" (just the obvious stuff like milk, cheese, etc). He was getting worse and worse (hospital trips for the reflux - choking, aspiration concerns, etc). So his GI said we should either try hypoallergenic formula or an elimination diet for me. I went on the elimination diet. I eliminated all Top 8 allergens. (This was around the end of September 2015).

For the first 3 days, the GI suggested we try LO on Alimentum to give his gut a chance to heal. Well, I tried 1 bottle of it and he had a very severe reaction (vomiting every 3-5 minutes, screaming, choking), so apparently he's super, super sensitive to milk protein.

The other thing I've done is keep a strict food diary and I discovered through trial and error certain foods that affect him - I had to cut corn, chocolate (even dairy free), tomatoes, and strawberries.

In spite of all that, we STILL had an episode of visual blood in the stool right around Christmas, and when we went to the GI on 12/28, the occult blood test came back positive. :bummed: Our GI is very pro BF but he suggested it might be time to try an elemental formula. But LO refuses to drink it (it is nasty).

So, I went on a very strict total elimination diet starting 12/29/15. I only ate turkey, sweet potatoes, rice, zucchini, olive oil and pears. I experimented with removing the rice for a while and that didn't seem to be an issue. This has improved his diapers - we still have mucus, but no more blood. And I've even seen a few seedy poops, which I think is a good sign. I am SLOWLY reintroducing foods now, one at a time. So far I have introduced chicken, bananas, and romaine lettuce, and so far so good with all of those. I have done some research on my own for least allergenic foods and I am generally trying to introduce lower allergen foods first.

I can't say I really recommend doing this diet, it has been one of the hardest things I've ever done. I am underweight, I don't feel well (I really feel malnourished!), it is generally not healthy for me. But I wanted to keep BFing and LO wouldn't drink the elemental formula.

We'll see when he grows out of it. His GI thinks he may have FPIES (which is basically like MSPI on steroids - gets worse on solid foods, doesn't go away as soon). She also wants us to delay solids a bit. I am already nervous about solids, not sure what he'll react to.

It could really be anything! If I were you I might consider cutting top 8 allergens and other common "trigger" foods like corn, tomatoes, citrus, strawberries. If you think you can do it. And if that helps, then reintroduce one at a time to figure out what the problem is. Or, try an elemental formula like Neocate or Elecare.

Could it be corn or rice? I know that is so hard to avoid when you're already GF but maybe one of those might be the culprit. Also my kids are both extremely sensitive to citrus (so no OJ for them or me). Also my son reacted to medication! So I don't know whether you have to take anything but diclo caused blood in stool with him.
I really hope you'll find answers soon.

Oh poor dude (and you!) you've eliminated so much!! I wonder if trace amount me are sneaking in? Soy can be sneaky. I would visit an allergist or other specialist.

FYI - my sisters daughter had a ton of sensitivities. She was BFing and similarly? Gf, DF, soy nut and s few others and her daughter totally outgrew all of them.

DS never had visible blood in his diaper (they wer more green/mucousy/VERY frequent), but we noticed a huge change in symptoms within a week of completely eliminating dairy/soy. He didn't have any other sensitivities--outgrew soy intolerance at 10-11 mo and we were able to sloooowly introduce dairy at around 18 mo. He's now 22 mo and eating cheese/milk/yogurt like he's making up for lost time! ;)

+1 to the suggestions about keeping a food diary. I'd also read every food label very carefully (I'm sure you've already done that, but it doesn't hurt to double check! One hidden culprit for me was spices and seasonings) Our ped said that theoretically DS should be able to have baked dairy since the proteins break down when cooked, but our ped was full of crap IMO. Pun intended. DS had very noticeable reactions to even trace amounts of dairy/soy. Good luck! It's not easy, but once you get it figured out it is totally manageable!

With #1 the blood cleared up when I finally figured out what she was reacting to. It was dairy, soy, and almonds. It took me past four months to figure it out and it was hit or miss with eliminating foods. She started to outgrow it around one. With #2 I eliminated dairy and soy a month before I was due, but he was still reacting to something so I went on a total emigration diet (pears, apples, bananas, turkey, rice, sweet potatoes, olive oil and potatoes) for two weeks then added things back in. It was hard but I didn't want to go through all the trying to figure out what it was like before. He reacts to dairy, soy, almonds and gluten. He's only three months so I'm not sure when he'll outgrow it but hopefully by one!

T had occasional blood I stool while I breastfed. Always dry skin too. Even though I eliminated dairy. When we switched to nutramigen had no issues with stool. Introduced cheese and yogurt at maybe 10-11 months and slowly became lax about dairy items. Dry skin came back but no real issues until we started cows milk at 12m. Bad eczema on feet with broken skin. Backed off and tried again at 13m and he had eczema but not as bad. Part of the problem was he was still crawling and would scratch his feet on carpets. It resolved around 15 months and he as walking by then. we saw a GI doc all along and this was under her direction.

following this - we are currently in limbo, 8 week old babe had green mucousy poops with blood streaks 12 hrs after having the rotavirus vax. paediatrician has told me to keep eating normal diet for 2 weeks, and if there is no improvement then to go back and we move forward with elimination of dairy. so far, it seems that she has gone back to yellow breastmilk poops, but every so often a green one comes back. still have another week to go.

@MrsSRS: that's a good idea, I should start writing down specifics so I can know for sure, bc right now I only vaguely remember what I ate the last few days. I'm going to call his pedi tomorrow and ask for a referral to a GI doctor or allergist, so I'm hoping that will help!

Well, you could try writing down what you eat daily and the quality of diapers daily. It might not be clear because reactions can be delayed or cumulative, but maybe you will notice that the reactions are always happening, for example, when you eat one specific food and you will be able to eliminate that and add others back in. Fingers crossed! Can you try an allergist or GI specialist instead of your pediatrician?

@MrsSRS: I've been super strict about hidden dairy too! I read all labels and completely avoid processed food/restaurant food. I basically only eat food I cook myself like fish, chicken, rice, gluten free pasta, pork, and most veggies and fruit. I would be very happy if he outgrew this by a year though!

We were good once we eliminated all trace dairy, and DS outgrew it around a year. I think he could handle baked dairy and me eating dairy before that but my memory is fuzzy. Could you be getting trace dairy? In some lunch meats, most meats at restaurants, most crackers and breads etc?

1) how long did it take until your LOs diapers were blood free?

2) was it just dairy and soy, or did they have other sensitivities as well? How did you find out?

3) when did they outgrow this?

I am getting so frustrated- I have been dairy And soy free for a good 8 weeks but I was still seeing blood a few weeks back so I eliminated gluten and eggs, saw some more improvement with his poop and I thought we were on a good track. Then tonight he had dark green poop with streaks of blood! :( I haven't idea what else it could be, I'm feeling so defeated. His pediatrician isn't very helpful "oh it could be anything, just start eliminating the common culprits"
