@MaryM: Thanks! Yes, she definitely said we can do the second wave if this comes back negative and I'm still looking for answers. I'm just not sure how far I want to take this especially because it COULD be because of nursing the small amount that I am.

@winniebee: My doctor said the same thing about the full loss panel. She ordered "part A" that my insurance covered fully.

I ended up asking for "part B" at my next appointment after all of the first panel came back negative. she warned me it might not all be covered, but at this point I think I'd rather pay for the test and know what's wrong (if something is) so we can deal with it instead of having to go through another loss.

Just thought I'd share that in case you feel as frustrated after the first panel as I did. I was angry it was all negative. I need to know why...

@BabyBoecksMom: thanks! yeah, i really don't want to deal with diminished ovarian reserve/ poor egg quality. she said if that was the case, she probably would refer me to a fertility specialist, but i don't think we would be prepared to go much further than progesterone supplement or clomid to have a 3rd baby. i think i would be truly happy with 2, but of course disappointed over not having a 3rd.

@MaryM: I track / know when I ovulate because of severe cramping (and then I get my period 13 days later!) so it seems that I ovulate around day 16/17. She said that I should plan for day 23ish labs and we will do it 7 days after suspected ovulation. Not perfect as I am not temping, but will give us an idea.

@winniebee: Do you track your cycles at all?

Only asking because P+7 bloodwork is a lot more accurate than CD21. CD21 assumes all women ovulate on CD 14 which just isn't usually the case.

Update - I met with my OB this morning. She's so great. After going over my history, including the above and also that I had an early loss prior to DS1 and that my mother had premature ovarian failure (early menopause at age 40). I didnt have to request any sort of intervention but she suggested that I get some bloodwork, but not the "full" repeat loss testing. She wants me to do day 3 labs (FSH, anti-mullarian, thyroid, and oestrodil) and day 21 labs (progesterone). Overall, she said that she thinks the issue has probably been chromosomal, but with this easy blood work, we can rule out other issues. She doesnt want to do testing for a clotting factor at this point since it's unlikely and involves a lot of blood and is expensive. Same for an HSG - expensive and unlikely. We can also do an ultrasound to view astral follicles, but she wants to do these labs first. We discussed nursing as a possible cause of the losses - she isn't convinced that is the issue, though she said it could be (estrogen/progesterone imbalance and/or lining too thin to sustain pregnancy). Overall, the appt. was helpful and I'm glad that I met with her - I'll go forward with day 21 labs this cycle, and day 3 the next. In the meantime, hopefully R will be totally weaned (though of course he's awfully sick right now).

@KayKay: @BandDmommy: agree to a certain extent. Timing wise I missed my period the first two times though (as well as with the one before DS1). I tested early this last time and I definitely would not have known I was pregnant without early testing.

@KayKay: @BandDmommy: @blackbird:
I agree with both sides!
I think the new tests definitely make them more common, same as testing early...but like @blackbird: said there may be anoher issue that is there, and blood tests and such are easy!
What I think was my fix was baby asprin and some antibiotics definetly non invasive!

@winniebee: I don't think so. There could be something else that isn't impacted by nursing. I have a blood clotting issue, so that colors my view. Being proactive allowed me to have both of mine :)

@KayKay: I agree. I feel tests are so sensitive now. I don't think people used to test until their periods were late and chemical pregnancies are much more common now because of sensitive tests.

Maybe a slightly different perspective, but I wonder how new of a phenomenon "chemical pregnancies" are. Not that they weren't happening historically, but that without good, (relatively) cheap pregnancy tests that could tell you you're pregnant so many days before a missed period, how many people never knew they were having them and just thought they got their period (maybe a couple days late)? So I just wonder how much data there is on them?

Also, I agree with prior posters that there is such a range for "normal" hormone levels, that it's possible that nursing puts you just out of normal.

I would be hesitant to get much testing or intervention until I'd totally weaned. And after that, it would depend on my timeline. For now, I'd probably avoid DTD during my fertile times until weaning and officially ready to try, just to avoid the stress & anxiety of any additional CPs.

@winniebee: id also bring up your prior losses before baby 1, ask if they recommend testing, ask why, ask for explanations along the way. This is complicated, ask how soon they think they can determine what is going on. Mention any family history of immune related diseases (ask dh about his side, too, maybe) .. If you don't get enough answers ask for a follow up appt very soon after .
Hugs. I am so sorry for your losses.

To offer a different opinion, it may not be the nursing. I feel like our bodies can change after pregnancies. My situation is different because I aways had fertility troubles but with my
First son, my problem was that I could not get pregnant at all. When trying to conceive my second son, I got pregnant twice (once naturally which was amazing considering we did Ivf the first time) and lost the pregnancies so my infertility issues changed. As someone else suggested, I would do cd 3 and 21 bloodwork to make sure there is no other issue at play. Good luck!!

@winniebee: I know many people are fine getting pregnant while nursing, but it was a struggle for me too. I had a mmc that I still think may have been partially due to nursing. I'm sorry for your losses and wish you the best of luck.

@catomd00: Thanks! I agree it's probably the nursing, even the very small amount I'm doing now. I guess I'm trying to figure out whether I *do nothing* now or the next time I get pregnant and then wait until a 4th loss in a row to think it's something else.

Some people just can't sustain a pregnancy while nursing. If you didn't have any troubles with pregnancies when you weren't nursing then I'd be inclined to think that might have something to do with it. I don't really know what questions to ask besides what testing is available and what she thinks could be causing it. I hope you get some answers and it's an easy fix to get Your sticky baby. Good luck!

@Alivoo01: I agree...they said they don't test for progesterone during pregnancy because it doesn't mean anything with respect to whether you will miscarry. I know OBs are sort of split on this issue.

Beyond just why is this happening, I would want to know what they will do / you should do in the case of a next positive test. Assuming it's betas + progesterone testing, I would want it noted LARGELY in my file so that I don't have any run around and can just tell the nurse (or whoever) to look in my file and to please schedule my blood draw.

I've had 3 early losses since September and have an appt with my OB for next week to discuss. Briefly, here's what happened with the losses.

1: In September was EBF my then 9 month old around the clock still and we were not trying, but also not being super careful. Had no idea I was pregnant and randomly started spotting and cramping so took a test and it was very positive. Was shocked - Pretty sure I conceived on CD6. Had HCG tested and it was 78 and since I was still spotting, had it retested 48 hours later, was already down to 30. Had natural m/c. Chalked it up to bad luck.

2: Made sure not to have sex for 2 months to give body a rest. Had sex one time in November, again not trying, but not being careful either. Ended up pregnant. HCG at 14 DPO was 19. Two days later it was 9. Had natural m/c. At that time, I was nursing 4x a day and R was 11 months old. Chalked it up to nursing/ maybe low progesterone due to nursing.

3: Wasn't careful (but still, also not TTC) in December because who gets pregnant three times in a row? Sex one time and since I knew the timing made pregnancy possible, took a test early *just in case* I needed to have progesterone tested or something. The test was positive, but my OB's office declined to take a progesterone level and told me that they don't typically do that, instead offered that I could take prometrium (which is typically offered after 3 losses or if you have low progesterone) - I declined and the next day my pregnancy test was lighter, so I knew it was another loss. Even though I'm only nursing 2x a day and even though I only pump 2 oz at the times that he does nurse (baby is now 12 months) chalked this one up to nursing, I guess?

I fully realize this all may be because of nursing; obviously many women get and stay pregnant while nursing, but that may not be the case for me. Aside from that, I'm wondering what other questions I should ask my OB? I'm 35 and otherwise healthy. We had an early lost before DS1 and but no real issues conceiving him (8 months total, including the loss). Conceived DS2 on second cycle trying.

ETA: we do want a third. Timing wise would have probably started actually trying right around now.

Thanks for reading and thanks for your input.
