@daniellemybelle @gingerbebe @snowjewelz

So, H transferred 2 oz at a weighted feed yesterday! This is the most she's transferred in the many weeks we've gone (most prior was 1.25). The LC said for being close to 3 months, getting about 25 oz of milk per day (between BF and FF) should be what we aim for.

That said, I am having a hard time fitting in more than 7 feedings in the last couple days. She seems to stay asleep longer (finally!) after any feeding around 7-8 pm and if I am honest, I am having a hard time waiting up to attempt another feeding for the day. She's been sleeping at least 5-7 hours after this 7th feeding.

I've been alternating supplementing every other day time feeding, mainly because I've wanted to try to not hurt my supply. Based on the numbers, at the low end she is only getting 20 oz a day with this routine. Her weight gain was about 9 oz in two weeks which seemed low to me but the LC wasn't concerned and said it would stop being so rapid around now, it was closer to a full lb or more the last two weighs at 6 and 8 weeks.

Thoughts? Start supplementing after more feedings? I just don't want my supply to tank if I up the formula. Wake her up for an 8th feeding if necessary? Keep things the same? I just am not sure if she is going to bed hungry or not.

ETA: I will also ask the LC her thoughts Monday if possible. it's a free clinic at a local hospital (no phone line) and communication is either email or in person. I may try emailing over the weekend.

How much my DD ate was never really associated with whether she slept good or bed! It's def more about wathcing her sleepy cues/time.

@ldh112: We just did EASY but it was more like EAESY :) So I didn't really time the feedings. I just nursed when she woke up from her naps and gave her a bottle when she went down for her naps. We were on 3 long naps though so I don't know how that would work for your cat napper...!

@daniellemybelle: my girl is a snacker too! okay so maybe if I breast feed (she takes 1-2 oz based on weighted feeds), play, THEN supplement before nap it may impact her napping duration? I hadn't thought of that. Would I still start the next feeding based on the start time of when I last nursed?

Are you supplementing right after nursing?

I think LO was about 5 months old when I started the routine of nursing when she woke up from her nap and then giving her a bottle before she went down for her next nap. She was transferring about 2 ounces of breastmilk and I supplemented 2-3 ounces.

Formula is more filling than breastmilk so when we started doing this, she totally started napping longer and better. Plus it made it easier for others to put her down for a nap because she didn't need to nurse.

Not sure if that is something that could work for you - my LO was a snacker so 2 ounces every 2 hours or so worked for her.

I still had milk because I was pumping him bottles plus 1-2 bottles of formula supplementation a day. If he was upset or fussy or needed help sleeping I could still nurse him for comfort and snuggles but I didn't have to worry about his intake because I knew how much milk he was getting from his bottles. It was lovely and pressure free.

@gingerbebe: thanks for sharing your backstory :) I've been curious about the nursing for comfort option- does that mean post-weaning or were you still producing milk for comfort nursing?

@ldh112: The Wonder Weeks app is actually based on a book of the same title. Its informative and you may be able to just get the book from the library or used off Amazon somewhere. I have both the book and the app and if you don't think you have time to read a book, the app is fine. DS hasn't been a textbook Wonder Week baby, but usually if there was a disruption, I could find something developmental related to it.

We supplemented too. I breastfed, pumped, and supplemented until DS was about 12 weeks, but I got tired of doing all three (DS was colicky, had reflux, and generally a never-sleeping grouch and I was really suffering from the lack of sleep and 45+ minute feedings). So we switched to bottle feeding for meals every 3-3.5 hours and nursing for comfort and snuggles. I dropped nursing altogether at 6 months when DS started biting. We continued to combo feed milk and formula until 9.5 months when I weaned totally to formula. (He didn't even notice).

I honestly credit formula supplementation for allowing us to provide him with BM as long as we did. I had super low supply that took over a week to come in and at the my PEAK of production was 22-25oz a day while pumping 30 minutes 6 times a day. Once DS reached 6 months, his intake went down from 30-32oz a day to 24oz so I technically could have exclusively pumped at that point, but I figured why put the extra pressure on myself? I kept my bottle of formula supplementation and just banked any extra and let him get the benefits of BM a little longer. I was able to give him BM 2 weeks after I stopped pumping and it was great!

One of my EBF friends had urged me to introduce formula early because her son literally REFUSED any formula and she could not be away from him until she weaned at 18 months. While I was sad about supplementing at first, I quickly realized what a blessing it was to be able to share in feeding duties, get some sleep, and have a baby that had no issues with formula whatsoever. He switched back and forth from breast to bottle, BM to formula, and we switched brands of formula as his needs changed and he never had any issues with that, despite his other ones.

@gingerbebe: Where did you read about the developmental leaps? It sounds like the wonder week stuff I've heard about but I don't have the App for it. Would that be a good investment based on your experience?

Full feedings are a bit of a mystery to me still, not sure if you EBF or have combo fed like me :) This is where I am wondering if I need to up my supplementing (which I realize may mess with my supply overtime). I have hoped she is taking in more as she has gotten older/stronger but the most she has ever transferred at a weighted feed is 1.25 oz. as of two weeks ago.

They have a developmental leap and growth spurt around this time and that always messes with sleep. I recall weeks 10 and 11 being crazytown with DS and I thought I was going to die. He hit 12-13 weeks, figured out how to roll, and slowly became a more tolerable human being. Waketime also extended at this point. Just give your baby good full feedings and stick to your eat, play, sleep routine. And maybe experiment with waketimes. Just 5 minutes more or less can help.

This is a follow up to my "how much?" thread :)

So far my 11-week old is not an amazing napper- only recently have we been able to lay her down for naps (yay!) but they are only 15-30 minutes in length.

Current "schedule" is eat (30-45 minutes), play (30-40 minutes, aiming for putting her down when she has been awake for 75 minutes give or take) and sleep (15-30 minutes), repeat. She has actually begun to wake up more at night recently, sleeping in about 4 hour stretches down from at least one 6 hour stretch she was doing for a couple weeks.

She nurses 7-9 times a day (gets 2 oz of formula 3-4 times a day)

Any thoughts? Could she be needing more to eat to hold her over? Her weight gain has been great with the additional 6-8 oz of formula a day but I am concerned that as she is growing that perhaps she needs more (my hope had been that she would be transferring breast milk better at this stage). Its been 2 weeks since her last weight check/weighted feed and we go back tomorrow. I'm thinking she is around 12 lbs based on weighing her with me at home. At 9 weeks she was 11 lbs 2 oz.

I've been tempted to rent a scale (to confirm how much she transfers from BF) but everyone, including my midwife, says I will drive myself crazy with it. I would like longer breaks between feedings and to see her nap longer but maybe that just isn't our normal - which I can be okay with as long as she is healthy and growing :)
