I asked if she was a smoker, gotten a flu shot and pertussis shot(there was an epidemic in our state last year), experience watching multiple kids ( I have two) among other questions. It was very important for me that she had the pertussis vaccination as she watches kids for other families.

We've done two one-month subscriptions of care.com now and have had really good success. (Our first sitter moved away so we signed up again). I started the interviews with more personality/getting to know you questions, as I wanted to find out more about the sitter as a person - where she lived (at home with parents, with roommates/significant other, etc), where she was going to school (we were looking at college aged sitters), if she had other part-time employment, etc, what her schedule was, how flexible she was, how much notice she needed (we were looking for someone occasionally 3-4 times a month). After we started talking for a few minutes, then I would interject some basic questions about the previous families she's worked with, how young the kids were, how difficult it was handling multiple kids at once, etc. All of the sitters I interviewed had multiple (at least 3 years) experience watching young infants ages 6 months-2 years so during the interviews I was more rating them based on personality/how well we connected/flexibility. I went with my gut on both occasions and we are very happy with both sitters.

I'm a SAHM and if I were in the position of watching my son plus another child and my son were to cry/need something, I know as a mom I would tend to him first even though I was being paid to care for another child. Just being completely honest. So that's something you may want to think of if you go the SAHM route. The interaction of other kids is a plus, though.

Here is one question I wish I had asked the first place/person we tried:
What do you do if baby is inconsolable? (assuming nothing is really wrong)
The answer I would be hoping for would contain that it is ok for a baby to cry (it's not a behavior issue), that she will try a variety of things to soothe her and if appropriate, call me to see if I have ideas, and keep baby safe and as comfortable as possible in her upset.
Good luck!

We need to find a sitter for LO, who is 8 months old, ASAP (in a little over a week) since the childcare we had planned fell through. We will only need them one day per week, and haven't had much luck finding centers who will take him because of that. So now I'm looking for a sitter, probably through care.com.

I'm really nervous, though, as LO has really only been watched by my husband and I, and a couple of times by my in-laws. I'm hoping to get some advice here.

What should I ask in an interview? What should I look for? I've seen sitters who are SAHMs with babies and sitters who don't have kids, any advice/experience/opinions on either? He might like playing with another baby, but maybe there are problems with that that I am not seeing? What about taxes and such? This will be for a few hours once per week, do I do anything with that?

I really am clueless, so I'll take any help/advice/resources you can give me!
