We pierced DDs ears when she was 4 months old.
I never regretted it. She didn't know anything then.
Just grew up thinking it was always there.
We never had any problems with her pulling her ears. There's been a few times her earrings came loose and she was the one who brought attention to it. We got it done at my parents jewelers place. But my friend got hers done at Claire's when she was about 8 months. She moved a lot more and a bit harder than when my DD got hers.

I'd be lying if I said i wasn't thinking about how cute E would look with little sparkly earrings in her ears! But she's only 4 months old and DH doesn't want to do them that young. I always said I'd wait until she wanted them done, but I'll be damned if I don't want to do them for her :P But she still puts her hands up by her ears too much

@PrincessBaby: I say call a few ENT's in your area but I would go to a parlor before I went to Claire's/Zales. Parlors are SO CLEAN. They really take thier jobs seriously. If you go during the week when they first open I doubt that there will be many people in there.

I think anywhere you go you are going to have to use a starter. The earring is a foreign body and you want to do everything you can to not have your LO reject it.

@PrincessBaby: FYI - I just made an appointment with a Dr. to get K's ears pierced next month! FWIW - this office's minimum age was 6 months. We're doing it a week early since we're going to a family wedding. They start with a 24K gold-plated balls she said (then you can change them out at 6-8 weeks.) It's not done with the gun, and done by the doctor herself. Just wanted to let you know, it took me a LOT of asking strangers w/little baby girls for where they went. This one I finally found from a mom at Babies R Us. Keep asking around! :)

I had my ears pierced at Claire's the holes were mismatched. The holes closed, I am very allergic to nickel and my skin really wanted to heal because of my inherited keyloids.

My DERMATOLOGIST re-pierced them, and they closed once a again.

@PrincessBaby: I had mine done at age 6 right after I had my tonsils taken out. I didn't cry once for surgery but did for my ears & I was always messing with them. However, I was able to clean them myself and turn them myself. Mom bought me really nice birthstone earrings in gold as my piercing earrings & I got them done at a high end jewelry store.

I must say this has me thinking about how cute it would be to have a little girl with pierced ears... :-) Not sure how DH would feel about that lol. I would take my girl to the tattoo parlor to get them done. No way will I ever use a gun again for a piercing. I've been going to the same place over the last few years to get my tattoos & piercings done & know that they would have no problem meeting with me at an earlier time to avoid the "Wet Wednesday" rush.

Imo taking a baby to the dr to get them done is a little over kill. BUT I also don't have a baby to hold in my arms as I'm say this. My opinion may change once to babies are here ;-)

I wouldn't want to risk my baby losing diamond earrings because she tugs her ears so maybe use something cheaper as her first pair if you do it. I did mine at 5. I believe my parents took me to a jewelry store. I remember it hurting but it wasn't anything traumatic.

@Arden: Bc in my mind, a little girl getting her ears pierced is something cute and adorable, and not the same thing as "body piercing" which seems waaaay less innocent. Looking at websites for body piercing places and thinking of bringing my sweet little baby to a place that has "Wet Wednesdays" where you get a discount for piercings to your nether regions, or "Get one nipple pierced, get the 2nd one half off" justgives me the heeby jeebies. Dont know if I can really bring my daughter there. Would be weird.

I was mainly looking for advice to see what others' experiences were.

Honestly, I'd take her to someone who is a highly trained piercer, which generally means a piercing/tattoo parlor. They are highly skilled, know how to make it as painless as possible, keep everything extremely clean and sterile. I'd much rather take C to a tattoo parlor than Claire's.

@Arden: Agree.

I guess I'm having a hard time understanding the problem with going to a piercing shop.

Piercing shops are where people go to get piercings. Granted, it's not most often ears, but a piercing is a piercing. Piercing your daughters ears isn't much different from piercing your belly button or nose or eyebrow or anything else, so why is it the PLACE that freaks you out?

@PrincessBaby: as someone who has gotten a lot of piercings throughout their life.. I'm not sure if you can start with white gold earrings. Everytime I've gotten a piercing it had to be stainless steel. I could be totally wrong but I would call first and ask wherever you decide.

I have zero experience, other than that I agree with everyone who says to go to the piercing/tatoo place. That is their job, if it is a reputable place they will be more hygenic and professional than a mall chain, and they certainly have experience. I would contact whoever you are considering before you go and ask them about your preference to use the earrings you bought. I imagine someone would accomodate you (unless there is a legitimate reason why it wouldn't be a good idea, in which case it would probably be good to know so you're informed). Good luck!

@tysonja: @sunny: Do you think if I went to a piercing shop (am I really considering thiz???), they would immediately use the earrings I have for her? I must say that 1 reason I'm leaning towards this is bc I dont want to have to use a starter pair! I want to use the diamonds, lol

@PrincessBaby: When I researched this (for myself!) I had also heard that tattoo/piercing parlors are WAY better than Claire's because of the needle vs. gun issue.

Plus the piercers have a lot more experience. Who would you rather have pierce your baby girl's ears... a piercer who does this full time and has pierced hundreds/thousands of people or a 17 year old girl working at the mall who does this a few times a week?

They also probably have better sanitation practices if you go to a reputable shop! I would check Yelp and find a really highly rated piercing shop.

:) I don't have a baby girl yet, but i think it looks so cute! A few of my friends have gotten their baby girls' ears pierced.

Personally I would feel WAAAYYY more comfortable having a baby's ears done at a tattoo/piercing parlour than at Claire's or another place like that. Hehe... maybe look around online in your area -- some of them are less 'hardcore' (so to speak) and super professional! :) Perhaps also ask each place about how often they do infant ears :)!

:) I think with the gun you are required to use the starter studs because the post is sharper than a normal earring post. :)

@TurtleDoves: Mexicans and Arabs have that in common! Except here they offer piercing in the hospital. A nurse did it just using the baby piercing earrings with a sharp back. We didn't get to watch but we made them describe he process beforehand (and also tried to emphasize the importance of having them perfectly centered hahaha).

Anyway, my foreign friends here who didn't pierce their girls' ears are constantly having them mistaken for boys and having to explain themselves so I decided, when in Rome... :)

I'm not sure if you can use your own earrings. We bought the package at Claire's. I wasn't planning on her having diamonds this young, that was DH's deal!

As far as sterilizing. They cleaned their hands in our presence. Cleaned her ears. Marked her ears (and made sure I was satisfied). The "gun" was different than I remembered. It was a small credit card shaped/sized contraption. They set the earring in it and the earring was the only part that touched her ear. They had me clean her ears immediately after with their solution that they sell in the kit.

I will also add that we waited in line with plenty of other young girls and LO handled it much better than the older girls that were completely aware. As matter of fact the girl after us was probably about 5 and she chickened out.

Our piercing pagoda is a stand in the middle of the mall, for some reason that makes me less comfortable than Claires.

Ugh... stay away from Claires the gun procedure is terrible. I got mine done there (when I was 16 - so it's not like I was too squirmy or something) and the piercing gun causes so much excess scar tissue, AND they did them totally crooked!
I ended up letting them grow over because they got infected over and over for like 5 years and then didn't redo them until this year haha, but I can still feel a big node of scar tissue in my left ear.
So, maybe I'm from the "wrong side of the tracks" (hope not!) but I'd definitely recommend a proper piercing place that uses needles as well.

I had them done at a plastic surgeon her pediatrician recommended /c he doesn't do it there.. There were no problems, she was 4 months. I'm glad I had them done when she was that small. She never touches her ears either.

@MamaG: Thank you for weighing in!!! So they can't pierce her ears with the earrings I already purchased from the jeweler?

@shopaholic: I was literally just researching them! It seems a better option than claire's but they still use a gun, which cant be sterilized and the more I read about that, the more it kind of grosses me out! Even though MY ears were pierced at claire's lol

@sloaneandpuffy: did you do it yourself! I'd love to hear more on that!

Oh @princessbaby: if you chicken out and think it'll hurt her (ahem, previous posters?), just think how painful it will be when she's like 6-7 years old. Um, get it over with now ;)
Just my opinion.
