I would ask things like how she plans to spend her time with your lo and what things activities she thinks they might do. Ask what her favorite and least favorite things were about previous positions-- I feel like this is a good way to find out what things irk her and maybe what she did to irk previous families.

I would also bring up time off, let her know what your plan is for time off-- paid vs. unpaid (I am a pt nanny and do not get pto but in a previous pt position I was paid if I was given less than 10 days notice.) Also, discuss with them how you would like her to handle it if she needs to call off and if you want her to be extra careful with illness or if it is fine for her to come in when under the weather.

If you will be home while she is working than I would discuss how you think that will look and get her input.

Good luck! I hope you find your Mary Poppins!

@wonderstruck: she'll be 6 weeks when I have to go back to work :( My husband works nights though so there are only 15 hours we need in-home help to watch her, since I work from home. Not excited about this transition :(

How old is your LO? I've been working on some questions since I'll probably need to do this in January when I go back to school, but I'd imagine the questions for a 6 month old are very different from the questions for a toddler.

If you pay cash under the table, you can't claim child care credits on your taxes without opening them up to owing taxes. If you pay through care with the taxes being paid you would be allowed to.

I was nervous when hiring an in-home caregiver. I was worried I wouldn't ask the right questions, but when it came down to it we had a casual conversation and kept the flow going. Some of the questions I had were answers through conversation & others were offered before I even asked. It was so thorough that I couldn't think of anything to ask!

In the chance that something would happen and I wasn't home, I wanted to make sure she was CPR certified, had transportation & a valid drivers license, was familiar with our area and had experience with infants.

We also wanted to see how she & Chloe would interact and get along. Chloe was 6 months, I think, when we first hired our sitter. They got along beautifully.. And now she is hands down one of Chloe's favorite persons. I even ended up being friends with her family!

We are going to be interviewing two candidates (both cleared background checks- found on a child care website) on Thursday. DH works nights and I work from home so we only need 15 hours/week of an in-home nanny.

I'm interested in any questions you wish you asked or were glad you asked? I already did preliminary phone interviews so I cleared the questions about schedules, pay, etc.

Also- the website I am using (care.com) allows you to pay caregivers on their site.. and has all this info about taxes, etc. Babysitting growing up I was always paid in cash. I will of course ask their preference (they're both students so I assume cash) but anything I should know about the options/tax implications?
