It's not food, but yesterday we made slime. Iffy on whether you'll have these items on hand, but it's just a teaspoon of borax, one bottle of glue and 1.5 cups water and food coloring as desired. There is still mixing (water and borax in one bowl, water and glue and food coloring in the other then pour the borax into the glue). It was 3-ish steps so it was short. It was still an activity he could do (he loves mixing), he loved doing the food coloring. And then seeing it transform into the slime was mesmerizing. THEN he plaued with the slime throughout the day. Like 3 times for at least a half hour each time. And it's pretty mess free (just keep it on a table but it's less messy than playdoh).

http://ourbestbites.com/2010/09/kids-in-the-kitchen-slime/

With googling there may be a recipe without borax. But I'm not sure.

DD (2.5) has enjoyed making banana bread, blueberry muffins, homemade playdough, and Jell-O, but zucchini muffins were too much for her attention span (too many ingredients I guess). I basically measure each ingredient myself and let her turn it over into the bowl. She likes to help mix, but needs a helping hand so ingredients don't go everywhere

Another vote for muffins! We made these last week and they were really quick. I think you could sub in any berry or even frozen berries/frozen fruit if you don't have fresh. We used frozen blueberries when we made them.

On the science experiment note, yesterday we did the plateful of milk with drops of food coloring in it. Touch the colors with a q-tip dipped in dawn and watch the reaction. We lost a good...oh...5 minutes to that one and then it was back to begging for tv (but hey, at least it was 5 minutes).

It's messy but i made some chocolate truffles with some girls once...
You can do all the preparation and they just have to roll the little balls and then coat them with coconut flakes or sprinkles etc..

How about cheesy bread or pizzas in the toaster oven? Scones are also super easy. Pumpkin muffins, pumpkin squares.

Do you have ripe bananas? What about banana bread?

Maybe you could do science experiments with baking soda and vinegar and food coloring. My nieces loved it when I put baking soda in a 9x13 pan and used droppers or spoons for colored vinegar to drop into the pan to make it fizz.

We are snowbound again tomorrow, and I'm trying to think of a simple baking/cooking activity to do with my girls. We've recently made gummy bears and today we made peanut butter cookies from a mix, to give you an idea of their attention span (and even with these, I finished filling the gummy molds/rolling the second tray of cookies).

So - what are your LO's favorite 5-10 minute kitchen projects? Bonus points for rather common ingredients, since we probably can't go to the store. 🙂
