@junebugsmama: Oh, I gotcha! Yeah, unfortunately if it totally dethawed on the counter, I'd toss it. What a bummer! :(

@junebugsmama: I hear you--so sorry you have to toss it. Throwing breast milk out is one of the most depressing things!

@Adira: I didn't mean to! Normally I do just for a couple hours, like 2-3, so it still has a big ice clump in the middle when I put it back in fridge. Oh well I'll just toss it. @mfa_lady: yeah it was totally defrosted. Darn! I agreed but figured I would ask anyways.

@junebugsmama: Honestly, I wouldn't thaw frozen milk on the counter in general. Just like you're not supposed to do that with frozen meat. I wouldn't think thawing like that would be safe.

@junebugsmama: Was it like, REALLY room temp by the time you got to it? If so, I'd probably toss. If it was still cold/had ice crystals, I'd use as soon as possible.

@mfa_lady: @Adira: what do you guys think about frozen on the kitchen counter? I normally grab a bottle the morning of from the freezer and leave it on the counter until it's mostly defrosted, then stick it in the fridge so dh can use it in the evening when I work. Last night I thought ahead for once and meant to put it in the fridge but left it on the counter instead! So it was out for around 10 hours from frozen to room temp.

Yes, it was cooled and then un-cooled. Shoot! Thanks ladies, I will toss.

If it's freshly expressed and your LO hasn't drank from it, I'd keep it (but I wouldn't freeze it - I'd try to use it as soon as possible). If your LO has already drank from it or it was previously cold, throw it.

Kellymom says freshly expressed is fine to sit out at room temperature for 4-8 hours.
Idea is 3-4.

It also depends if LO has drank from it already. If LO has then I would definitely chuck.

Was it refrigerated before it sat out? If so, and it got cooled and un-cooled, I'd toss it. If it was fresh and sat out, and then got refrigerated, I'd likely still use it as long as it smelled okay. (But use it soon!)

I always used 5 hours out as a limit and then threw away. So I would probably play it safe and not use it.

Before I throw out some breast milk, can anyone tell me if it's safe to keep breast milk (now in the fridge) but that was sitting out at room temperature for 6 hours yesterday?

I've tried looking but can't seem to find info on this (it might just be that I'm extremely sleep deprived). Thanks!
