I struggle with naps on a daily basis with my 9 wk old. It feels like all I do all day long is get him to sleep, he wakes up too early, then I'm trying to get him to sleep again! It's Groundhog Day around my house. I've tried everything! I'm so exhausted but I guess I'm slowly accepting that it's not me, it's him! :)

@mae: We are having the kind of day over here in which I'd lose my mind if I wasn't laughing about it :) Fortunately, today I am laughing.

@ellewoods84: No, no, don't let me mislead you. My butt is on that yoga ball doing a graceful bounce-rock because mama is tired after 90 minutes of bouncing at 4 am (wtf, baby? Don't you know you're almost 4 months old? I was told we'd be done with this now.)

@Smurfette: yep. if she bypasses her 46 minute nap (sometimes she only makes it to 30), I go up and check on her because its too rare for her to sleep any longer than that. I assume something must definitely be wrong.
@Mrs. High Heels: I don't know why either! it is the best, if only she would get on board. lol.

@ellewoods84: Yea I know what you mean! Try not to drive yourself crazy with all the recommendations, but more like a loose guideline... I don't know why babies don't love sleep. It's just about the best thing ever! :)

@ellewoods84: R never did either. I was lucky if I got an hour nap out of her. That was holding her too. I never got anything done while on maternity leave.

@Mrs. High Heels: yeah, I reference that chart, but sometimes that chart makes me crazy because my daughter NEVER gets the recommended total sleep time for her age. and not because I am not trying. sometimes she just will not nap, no matter how hard I try. but, it is a good reference...if only she would agree! lol.

I would usually base it on sleep cues when she was really young but would start to see a pattern. Now at 11 months, I know she can stay awake for about 3 hours so just put her down around that time regardless of if I've seen any cues. Sometimes she goes right to sleep and sometimes she talks to herself for a little bit before sleeping.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: okay sounds good. yeah...because sometimes after like 1 hour-1 hour and 15 minutes she hasn't given any cues. but, I try anyways. My husband always wait for her to yawn or rub her eyes, but sometimes she never does. SO! I guess I will just wait for the cue. If I don't see it and its been 1 hour I will start her nap routine.

I do both! I started looking for signs around the time that they "should" be getting sleepy based on age. I followed this chart a lot! https://docs.google.com/document/d/11GHo4keUb2TVJUlSL1kD6HQcEgaNFBmzoQoOzcpcyas/edit?hl=en&authkey=CPXE1bsO&pli=1#

@Smurfette: okay, so my experiment isn't totally lame. I will continue to just do what I am doing!
@Mae: lol, naps are a mystery. I swear I feel like I spend my entire day attempting to put her for a nap/getting her to fall back asleep if she wakes too early from a nap/googling and reading about sleep. I am jealous of your good sleeper. My daughter would NEVER fall asleep for a nap if I just put her down and rubbed her forehead. She would look at me, like...you crazy mom. but anyways going to go by the sleep cues!
@gilmoregirl: yes! this! like, sometimes she yawns so early and I am like...um, are you really tired? and then I do get stuck not rocking, but bouncing on that damn exercise ball for so long. but, then when I miss the window, I have to bounce a long time too. so I am trying to figure out her window. You would think after 12 weeks, I might have figured it out. NOPE.

When she was that little, I went mostly by sleep cues, but put her down if it had been longer than normal. Now I go mostly by schedule/time awake, but still use sleep cues.

Annnd my LO just woke up from a nap after only 50 min. Which is going to mean she is cranky. Sometimes I feel like we're the blind leading the blind here :)

Both, but I don't use yawns as a sleep cue because he starts yawning before he's ready to go down, and then I'm stuck rocking him for a million years. He gets whiny and pulls at his eyes and then I know it's nap time. He's usually out within minutes.

But then again, I just spent an hour trying to get the little turd to nap in his crib, so clearly I don't know what I'm doing either.

My LO is 10 weeks old and I wouldn't exactly say I have naps figured out! Although our issues is generally more her waking up early vs. not falling asleep when I put her down. If Fia started yawning 30 min after she got up-- unless she had really missed a lot of sleep before (bad night, short previous nap) I would probably try to keep her up another 15-20 min at least. Usually I wait for sleep cues which she will usually start around 1hr 15min after she last woke, but sometimes only 1 hr. If she hasn't yawned by 1 hr 30 min I'll maybe give her another 10-15 min but around 1 hr 45 I put her down regardless. I do diaper change, swaddle, white noise, binky, down into the pack and play and stroke her forehead-- then walk out. Almost always now she falls asleep within 5 ish min from when I leave.

If she rubbed her eyes before the normal awake time I would try and put her down. If not I went by awake time.

When you put your baby down for a nap, do you base it off of sleepy cues (yawning, eye rubbing, etc). or total awake time? Example: Usually my daughter is awake around 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes between naps. I think this is appropriate, but then again, her naps suck, so who knows. I am trying an experiment today. When she did her first yawn, I took her upstairs, swaddled her, white noise, etc. and put her down for a nap. However; it had only been 30 minutes since she last woke. So...which to go by? It still took a long time to get her to fall asleep. She's 12 weeks old. Thanks!
