Some of the chain resorts let you use the other resorts for the day for free. We stayed at Moon Palace for a week a few years ago (loved it! Would highly recommend.) and went to a couple other resorts.

We are headed to Playa Del Carmen in December and I've been to both Cancun and Cozumel. I think I will prefer Playa Del Carmen with my family, Cancun was super fun and it's beautiful and I found Cozumel to be a little hard to get to and secluded (and we don't scuba dive so everyone questioned why we were there)-- we are doing all -inclusive for the first time (I cannot wait!) and extended family all are going too(babysitters!). I'm interested to hear what resorts get high marks in Playa Del Carmen...

Cozumel is an island off the coast so I think you would have to boat there?

We have gone to Playa del Carmen with out LO and we absolutely loved our resort - if you are looking for resort recommendations. For me, I did not want to be in the "hotel zone" in Cancun because I wanted to avoid spring breakers and I wanted a very nice resort that was family friendly!

I think Playa del Carmen, Playa Mujeres, etc. are very similar if you get comparable resorts but I wouldn't want to be in downtown Cancun.

Following!

I have a big work trip to Mexico in June and we want to tack a vacation on the end of it since it's right around our 5th anniversary. To be honest, we usually wing it when we're on vacation--like, zero planning beyond buying a plane ticket, but I feel like I should be a better adult and actually do some research for this one :silly:

We like the beach but don't need to spend every day there, we like hiking and exploring, and of course, good food!!

I always stay away from the main strip... I've been to Playa Mujeres; it's a bit of a drive from the airport, but I like that it's more secluded!

Playa Del Carmen is my favorite. It's super walkable and a good mix of tourism/culture. La Isla Mujeries is really fabulous too. I've stayed in Cancun which is great- but I would not take T. Tulum is far from the airport. I've never been to Cozumel- but if you are wanting to explore a little I'd think that would be a good choice.

Are you wanting to leave the resort at all? If not I don't think it matters a ton. I've stayed in resorts in Tulum and Cancun.

Riviera Maya has some of the prettiest beaches/sand and it's not far from the Cancun airport. Playa del Carmen is fun for shopping or going out at night without the chaos of Cancun. I love those areas of Mexico!! We have taken our boys twice and plan to go back in the near future. I pick all inclusive resorts based on size, options for kids (some have really nice daycares or nannies for when hubs and I need a drink or some alone time for an hour or two) and quality of the beach.

I believe Cozumel has a completely different airport? So if you're flying into Cancun I don't think Cozumel is really an option. For family-friendly I like Playa del Carmen. The Cancun "hotel zone" makes me think of spring break on MTV (though I'm sure you could find family-friendly resorts there, too).

I have traveled pretty extensively in Mexico, but not in any of the resort areas. For a family-friendly vacation in the yucutan peninsula (flying into Cancun airport), should I just pick a resort based on amenities, or should I focus on a particular area?

I guess I'm asking--is there any difference between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, etc or are they all comparable if the resort is good?

Anything I should know, pros and cons for any of these places? I feel like there are too many choices.
