Both NICUs we were at used the cheap ones under the (clamped) arm and didn't adjust the temp at all, so that's what I do!

Another vote for the Exergen forehead one. I haven't used it on LO yet, but it has been very accurate on me!

I have this forehead one. I like that you don't have to buy covers for it or clean it between uses

We love our forehead thermometer, Exergen one like mentioned above. It's quick and I can even use it on my husband who can't stand to take his temp any other way. I've taken her temp in her sleep and she hasn't woken when I use this.

@MamaCate: @Mrs. Champagne: How long does it take to read the temp? I think I could hold her arm down a little more easily than the rectal way!

We also have a cheap one we use under the arm. Seems to work well so far.

@Foodnerd81: We just have a cheap target thermometer but take her temp under the arm. If I hold her and clamp her arm next to her side, it seems to work fine. You just need to adjust the temp by adding 0.9-1 degree. I think ours could be used rectally too but we have never tried!

We have one of those behind the ear ones, but not sure how much more accurate it is than the in the ear one...

Is there a quick, easy, reasonably accurate way to check a temperature? I got an ear thermometer in a first aid kit and it sucks. I can't even get a close reading on myself, much less a squirmy tiny ears- like it ranges from 97-99 on me. It's useless. But the rectal one, while accurate I assume, is such an ordeal and she hates it. I'd love something quick for those times when I'm like, hmmm you feel warm but probably not feverish but I feel like I should check... Does such a thing exist? Links?
