@luckypenny: That looks good! I had something like this recently: http://www.marthastewart.com/329038/cranberry-cocktails It was a cranberry simple syrup, prosecco/champagne/sparking wine with loose cranberries dropped in! Friends use to make this awesome punch. I want to see if I can find the recipe...

@luckypenny: If you wanted to get fancy, you could do a sparkling wine too like a prosecco and have garnishes - cranberries, juice to mix in, etc. As for beer, maybe do a mix of lighter beer with a heavier one?

@LindsayInNY: yup. Hosting. It's also the first party with all our new friends and I want to make sure everyone has a good time. And that there's enough food lol.

DH and I both don't drink. I never really liked to and as a crazy teenager I only had Long Island ice teas and corona ;)

I wouldn't do spiced ciders or mulled wine. They are festive, but kinda gimmicky. Just regular red and whites would be best!

@luckypenny: Oh, I'm all for Costco booze shopping :) Are the Blue Moon cases there seasonal? Only drawback is if it's regular Blue Moon, you'd have a lot of one type of beer, since it's a Costco size package and all.

I think Sam Adams is the right combo of not too expensive but still nice for a cocktail party. I loooove IPAs, the happier the better, but I know a lot of people aren't into them.

For a fancy cocktail party, I might go with Ommegang. If the cocktails are special, shouldn't the beer be special too? :)

@luckypenny: Yes, get something local if you could, like @mediagirl: suggested. Or since it's a holiday party, I'd go with a Sam Adams or Blue Moon seasonal variety pack. There's usually a good mixture of IPAs, ales, lagers, stouts, and/or season-appropriate (think gingerbread stout, etc) for the holidays.

@luckypenny: Lagunitas is DH's favorite, but it's a super strong hoppy flavor and I'm not a fan. When we get it for a party I always get something else too, most people I know don't like it. For parties I like to get a mix of beers. The Sam Adams or Blue Moon seasonal packs are always good!

@luckypenny: IPA is sort of a love it or hate it kind of beer (they tend to be hoppy). A Lager or Ale is probably your safest bet if you want one beer that many will drink

@luckypenny: IPAs are very hoppy and people either love 'em or hate 'em. They're very popular with the hipsters these days. But not a general crowd pleaser.

Who is your audience? Maybe we can give more suggestions based on the event and the attendees.
