Good thread to read as I'm considering saying a definite yes to an epidural for my twin delivery. I have a risk a higher risk of c-section so the thought of missing the window for an epidural and having to be unconscious during general anesthesia if I have a c-section doesn't sound like something I want. So now, I need to read up on how much pain I'll have during the induction.

I joined just to reply to this post. My water broke at 37 weeks with no signs of labor starting. My plan was to always try to go med free but open to options depending on pain. My water broke at 4:30 am and 9:00 pitocen was started. I made it until about 4:00 when I was in so much pain I could barely wait for the epidural. The epidural was amazing! I felt so much better. I could no longer feel the awful contractions but j could feel the pressure in my bottom. I knew when it was time to push and my labor was not stalled. I had the epi at 4:00 pm and my baby girl at 6:22 pm. The only thing that stalled my labor was waiting for my doctor who was with another patient in delivery. I pushed for 12 minutes total - 3 rounds of three pushes. I had no tear at all snd basically felt recovered at delivery. Now it did help that my peanut was 5 lbs 10 oz. I just wanted to share my positive epidural story. I tried natural, next time I'll get an epidural as soon as I can although I did like being able to use the bathroom whenever I wanted though most of my labor. Good luck and do what works for you and baby that day.

This evening the midwife met with me and said she thinks I'll be ready for pitocin first thing in the morning. Then she asked if I wanted the epidural, and it sounded like I will get the epidural before the pitocin. She thinks I'm gonna go fast with the pit based on how things have been progressing!

For me induction involved a lot of waiting (they started me on pit at around 9am and I had DD at 00:31am the next morning. I had an epidural at around 1pm when the contractions got bad. It was a lifesaver for me. I was able to rest until it was time to push!

For what it's worth, DH says that from the time they started the pit to when I was done and ready to go was less than 2 hours. (I don't recall, too many drugs.) So it could go faster than you think once things get really moving!

Couldn't think of a good answer for your poll, but I had an unmedicated pitocin induction, so it can be done! I was ineligible for epidural for low platelets, which i only found out after the pit had started. I had planned a med free birth before I knew I was having an induction, but figured I would probably get one once I knew I was being induced. That said, from the point I really wanted it until I delivered was less than 4 hours, so that puts it in some perspective. In the end I was happy I went med free, although I feel now that it wasn't really a big deal. Best of luck to you for a speedy and safe delivery!

Good luck!! I would go as long as you can without, and ask for one when it gets too painful for you to bear.
I was induced with my 2nd and asked for an epidural after they broke my water.
No complications and my son was born less than an hour after I got it!

My nurse gave me the best advice during my induction: At around the time you're starting to think about wanting an epidural, ask for it because it will probably take the CNA at least 20-30 minutes to get to you and then there's the time it takes to put it in, etc. I did two hours of maximum pitocin dosage contractions and was like CALL THE CNA. It took him under 30 minutes to get there and get everything placed so I had an easy time, but I can't imagine having waiting an hour or more. After that, it was a breeze - until I needed an emergency c-section 12 hours later, but that was because DS got stuck.

Yes!! I went from 1.5cm to 10cm in under 3hrs on pit - they didn't know I was progressing so fast and refused my epi "until I was further along". I didn't think I was going to survive. Demand the epi before they put the drip in!!

@dc yoga bee: 3 days?! I'd recommend getting the epidural right as soon as you think you may want it. It only took me 7 hours from Pitocin to pushing and I was still really tired during pushing. I think if you're already exhausted from 3 days of waiting/contractions, pushing will end up being a rough experience.

I had an induction and was taking FOR-EV-ER to progress and had been up for like 36 hours and was exhausted. I got the epi just so I could sleep. I got a good 3 hour nap in and I think that is the only reason I was able to get through 3 hours of pushing and deliver vaginally. I really believe if I hadn't had that epi, I would have wound up with an unscheduled c-section.

With my first induction OB wouldn't start pitocin without an epidural on board. I was devastated as I wanted a med free birth.

With my second induction I wasn't able to feel contractions and then all of a sudden I had horrible back labor. My midwife strongly encouraged me to get an epidural stating that if it is back labor and I was in that much pain nothing but an epidural would help. They quickly ran a bolus of fluids and anesthesia was right in. While he was placing the epidural I was having so much pain and the nurse said something wasn't right. Well baby was right there! She was quickly delivered with anesthesia still in the room and the epidural didn't set in until just after delivery.

I'd stick it out as long as I could, but if you decided to get one there is no shame in that either.

I hope everything goes well! My experience wasn't typical, obviously, but the induction part was. They used basically the equivalent of a foley catheter initially, and those contractions were fine. The pitocin, though, I would have given anything for an epi during that, even once they turned it all the way as low as they could. The contractions were right on top of each other. So I agree with those who say to wait and see, but in my experience if I have to be induced again all my plans for a med-free (well, pain med free, since pitocin is a med) birth will be out the window. Don't care how much we paid for the bradley classes!

Lol so many different experiences. They think this is going to take 3+ days. She said my cervix is not favorable. 0cm dialated and 20% dialated. So far, they only put in the cevridil (sp) at 8:45pm. I won't get pitocin until I progress. Thank you for all the replies, I appreciate each and every one!

No! I was induced last week for the same reason. I believe recovery is a million times easier without the epidural! I had two inductions without epidurals

Laying on my left side and "melting" into the contractions made my BP go to the normal range, the dr are still kidding that I just needed Pitocin to bring it down bc it's still high

YES. I was induced and it was awful! I got an epidural pretty early on. I highly recommend it! Also, it often takes longer if you're induced, and if you want to have any energy to push at the end of all of it, get the epidural so you can kind of sleep. I say kind of because the nurses were in my room every hour making me change positions!

YES! Pitocin is a B. If you wait until you're in active labor, my understanding is that you should keep progressing. A peanut ball was super helpful for me and comfortable! With E, I went as far as I could and with T, I opted in quicker because I was bed ridden.

One bonus is that the epidural will bring your BP down. Once they told me that, I was like YES PLEASE

I was given pitocin because labour stalled at 7 cm and I couldn't have an epidural because the doctor wasn't available. It was awful and I would never consent to that again if the epidural wasn't available. Having said that, I've heard stories where women are ok. So, go as far as you can and then get it. Maybe you'll be lucky.

I was induced later (41 weeks), but I didn't get one and it was all okay! Contractions were easy until they broke my water & then it hurt, but I dialated so quickly that I kept telling myself I could wait until the next check. (Like, "oh I'm a 4? I can wait...Oh I'm a 7 now? I can wait...") I just kept waiting till it was time to push.
Either way, it'll be great! Happy labor day!!

If you need it and are not progressing quickly, get it. Inductions can take forever. And they may be able to do more after you get one. I was induced and got an epidural when I was only 2 cm (but had been having painful contractions for about 6 hrs and horrid back labor for 1 min every 2 min for 2 hours) because I knew that I could not keep going at that rate for another 8cm. Them doing the epidural calmed me down enough they were able to do a foley catheter to dilate me to 4cm and from there I started dilating much faster. The only downsides of the epidural for me were 1) I did have some nausea (but they gave me meds to fix that) and 2) having to get a catheter (but that was not at all painful I just hated the idea that they were doing it).

As a doula my advice would be to wait a while, see how you feel, and try to get to 4-6cm if possible before getting it. You are less likely to have labor stall if you are further along.

But if you feel like you need it at that point, go for it! Inductions can be long and tiring and you should do whatever helps.

If you do get it, try to keep your pelvis open by putting a peanut ball or lots of pillows between your legs and lay on your side, rather than flat on your back. It will help keep your pelvis open so baby has more room to move down.

And good luck! Congratulations on baby day!
