@JennyPenny: This makes me feel better! I didn’t know other kids did this. I was actually wondering about ADHD for my son because he literally cannot sit still and listen as his only activity.

@Corduroy: This is random but my 5 year old fiddles with the beads on a Melissa and Doug bead maze while I read to him. He doesn’t sit still ever 🤣

We give my 6yo a small bowl of lego to do while he’s doing virtual school. He listens well while he fiddles with it. Also hot wheels cars and playmobil figures.

Paint by Sticker (also called sticker mosaics) and puzzles. Doing a large puzzle together as a family while one person reads aloud is a really nice way to spend an evening before bedtime.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Tonight I pulled out some paper and pencil for DS and he happily drew while we read. It was much more peaceful. I look forward to trying the other suggestions.

What if he sits on a large exercise ball, so he can wiggle and gently bounce while he listens? I used these in my 3rd grade classroom, instead of chairs, and they did wonders for the wiggles. They really helped my kiddos stay focused.

This podcaster I enjoy listening to talks often about giving her kids busy hands during read aloud times. Here's a whole bunch of suggestions: https://readaloudrevival.com/73/

At my daughters school they do read aloud time to a long story like Harry Potter, and they’re encouraged to do something with their hands to keep them busy and quiet ha. Some ideas of what kids bring - drawing notebook and gel pens, rainbow loom bands to use on fingers, Legos, slime or play dough and a few tools, and big floor coloring posters with markers or crayons.

DD (6) got this at Christmas and she has been using it during her remote lessons to help her sit still. It's like endless bubble wrap. It has a small noise but it's pretty quiet.

You could also try some small lego builds or a reusable sticker book.

My family started reading Harry Potter recently. My 5.5yo wants to listen (he's seen the movie) but isn't quite ready to sit quietly for a chapter -which I think is perfectly typical for his age. We're really reading for our almost 8yo. The friction we're facing is that DS interrupts when he loses focus on the story. It's not a problem for him of course but it's frustrating for the rest of us.

He is not required to stay in the room and we've encouraged him to go do something else if he wants but he wants to listen.

I've encouraged different balance and movement toys but they only work for a few seconds. Are there other activities that might help him sit quietly? I'm thinking like the kid equivalent of knitting but I don't know what that might be.
