My DD is 3.5 and naps do affect her night sleep. She just finds if harder to go down and stay down! I have given up on pushing naps. If she wants to sleep, fine. If not, fine.

@MamaChin: be forewarned, though. This transition has tremendously helped night sleep, but it's been tricky. He actually asks to nap sometimes, but even a 10-15 minute car nap will mess with his night sleep. Not saying that will be true of your guy, but I gave in and let him go back to napping for a bit, and that just confused the poor kid. I wish I'd pushed through then. There's no going back now, though!

My son is 4.5 so he doesn't always need or want a nap. Sometimes during the weekend I tell him he can play quietly in his room or the living room while his sister is napping and we get a break (to work or nap or relax). However, I tell him that if he is loud, he has to sleep. It actually works really well and he can occupy himself for an hour or two playing with Legos, looking at books or playing with other toys.

@Jess1483: thank you for the input, I never thought it could be affecting his wake ups since he never fights bedtime. Did your LO fight bedtime when he napped? Why don't they come with instructions?!

@MamaChin: my kid will nap 2+ hours if I let him, but it definitely messes up his night sleep. So just taking a nap may not be a reliable sign for needing one. But every kid is different. We are very much still adjusting, but in general have gone from 10 hours of night sleep with wakings to 11.5-12 hours. Something to think about.

@winniebee: interesting. He gets a solid hour and 20 in the car everyday, so I don't think he's physically ready to drop it? i think it's just an aversion to napping in his bed without me around. He gets crappy night sleep (slowly working on that a la sleep lady shuffle) with at least one wake up a night so I'm reluctant to skip his nap even though its annoying that it's in the car. I think on a day I have help I'll let him play in the playroom until he asks to come out and see if maybe he'll just fall asleep there.

Gave up on nap at 34 months. He wouldn't stay in his room and it was a major struggle. Tried tot clock, bribes, rewards, and nothing worked. Couldn't lock him in room because he shares a wall (and adjoining door) with brother and he would just scream or bang on the door and wake brother up. He would always nap in the car but I only did it if he really really really needed it. As in, epic tantrums or sick or something. I read that it takes a few months for their bodies to adjust to no nap before they will start sleeping longer at night. If you keep letting him cat nap or nap occasionally, he may just stay in this bad cycle. I say ditch it altogether unless you have a planned outing where both kids can nap in the car for a decent amount of time. When we are at home, he will play quietly in playroom for a decent amount of time after lunch.

I've long since given up on naps (DD is 3). Quiet time worked for like a week but then she would refuse to stay in her room and turn into a tantrum so I just said "whatever". She was waking up grumpy from her naps anyway and days she napped bedtime was a battle. So now we push through the day and have early bedtimes. She sleeps 8pm to 7 am.

I am not opposed to locking him in, when we moved and DH changed all the door knobs I asked him to put the lock on the outside on both our kids rooms. But he gets HYSTERICAL and will wake up little sis. Also he will throw up. Ugh.

Rewards systems also do not work on this kind of extreme aversion. "I don't WANT ice cream/stickers/to be good/tv!"

I used a baby gate and kept an eye on the video monitor (never needed it until he went to a big boy bed) and yelled at him to get back into bed if he left. I think he still believes I have eyes everywhere.

We stopped naps after 3 because he was staying up until 10pm +. He can still nap if he falls asleep, which happens once a week or so, but he will still go to bed normally now. I think starting school helped him a lot with his sleep, he needs it more now.

We replaced nap with quiet time in LO's room at about that age. We managed trying to come out with the consequence of losing screen time for the rest of the day if she could not stay in there and it worked. She would occasionally fall asleep in there but mostly does not anymore.

We started rubbing LO's back for naps so he would go down. Such a bad habit to start, but he won't nap otherwise, and he needs it some days! But, I know our nap days are numbered. He still doesn't nap at school (he goes 3 days/week).

The only way we can get my almost 3 year old to nap is to take our travel DVD player, put on a movie, and say "you have to lay in you bed and watch until it is over" most days (it's only weekends) she falls asleep but sometimes she watches the whole thing, but in my mind at least it's quiet time.

@blackbird: same here. DD1 will USUALLY nap but if she doesn't want to, I don't care, she still needs to have "quiet time" in her room for an hour. We have a doorknob cover on the inside of her door that she hasn't figured out yet and that keeps her in there.

I would totally let him sleep in the playroom if he would go down in there!

Or do like @blackbird: and lock the door to keep him in his room for quiet time.

Also, if you do a carnap, can you come back to the house and park in the garage? I will let my kids finish a nap in the car while I unload groceries and stuff inside.

I would institute a reward system. Something like if he stays in his room for an hour at nap time he gets a sticker and if he has a sticker for every day at the end of the week he gets to pick from a prize box.

We ditched nap because it affected night sleep so much. He would prefer to nap, but he sleeps much better (and longer) at night when he doesn't nap. I do have to fight to get him through a mid-day lull to keep him awake before bed. I tried to institute quiet time and it was a massive failure. So now he gets an hour of "rest" while he watches TV. You win some, you lose some.

I don't know if that speaks to your situation at all, but I commiserate...

DS will be 3 in November and I cannot get him to nap in his bed. I can't even get him to stay in his room during nap time. He is definitley not ready to cut out nap since he only sleep an interrupted 10 hours a night, and he can't last 5 mins in the car. We've been carnapping everyday for weeks. This means 1. I can't get anything done during his nap and 2. I have to take little sis with us even though she naps like a champ in her bed. 😢

He will play quietly in the playroom for at least 15 mins, until I take him out in the car. Does anyone else have their LO do quiet time in places other than their room? I always wonder if he'd just fall asleep in there but then don't want to miss lil sister's sleep time so I drag them both in the car. I don't even know what I'm asking advice on, I guess I just need to say out loud how ridiculous this nap situation is.
