@Littlebit7: @mrswilson2012: You guys are really making me want the Peloton! Maybe I'll ask for it as a birthday/Christmas present ;)

I do almost all my workouts at home with Fitness Blender.com. All of their workouts are free or you can pay a very small fee for a program and they tell you what workout to do each day. Then you can reuse the programs over and over.
I liked classes at the gym, and still try to make my favorite spin classes, but this has been a lifesaver by eliminating the drive there and back. I thought I wouldn't push myself enough, but I actually workout harder bc I'm not self- conscious of "failing" or not being able to finish an exercise in front of other people. I got a set of adjustable weights that I stick in a cabinet while I'm not exercising. Love it!

We just recently made this switch about 2 months ago. We canceled our gym membership and purchased a Peloton and it is by far the best decision we've made! I actually work out WAY more then I did before and it's so nice to do it from home. I don't have to get to the gym 30 minutes before class to reserve a bike or deal with people being on the machines. It's a huge investment but so far it's been worth it for us.

Another option with the peloton apparently is to get only the subscription service...you don't have your stats posted, but you get access to the library of classes. I am considering it for something like $12.99 a month.

@agold: I know the budget is still a factor, but you’d be surprised how small the peloton is. It has a smaller footprint than a yoga mat!
Ours is tucked against a wall; it is really
Small.
@aprild: the peloton is a big investment and you still have to pay a monthly fee. But as far
As working out at home, this is hands doesn’t he best thing we’ve ever found. I use it more than any gym I’ve been a member of, and my husband is addicted. Neither of us were “spin people”.

I haven't belonged to a gym in years, I just can't make it work with my schedule. So instead, I have a spin bike in my playroom. I really wanted a peloton, but I know myself so I just look for spin class videos and do those for now.

What I really need is strength training, that's another layer of complexity that I do better with machines but, again, I know myself and my ability to get to a gym.

@peaches1038: it is the 7 minute workout for women. It is all free (there are ads but not intrusive) and a lot more than 7 minutes. There are a bunch of different workouts with different focus areas like arms, abs, butt etc. It is the HIIT 30 seconds of activity with breaks. I combine different ones to get to about 20 minutes.

@aprild: I did this sort of by accident—it was quit the gym:...long pause of doing not much...then get into a good workout at home.

Once my baby stopped nursing in the morning and my DH was consistently home until 7 am I committed to 20 minutes a morning, 6 days a week. I can’t fit in a big long trip to the gym and I do best with morning workouts.

So currently I get up and run 1.5-2.5 miles (around 20 minutes) with the dog on the trail by our house m/w/f/sun. I do a HIIT app in the living room on my phone t/th am (not really cardio but toning since I have the cardio covered with runs). I take Saturdays off.

I track everything in map my run and it helps me be accountable and motivated. You can make it work if you are committed!

I'm thinking of quitting my gym and instead going with a streaming beach body membership. We just finished our basement so I'll have a dedicated space. I just have to figure out how to make myself wake up early. The gym I go to now is a yoga studio that has some great sculpting classes. But it's been hard to go saturday mornings and at 8 pm at night. I need to do mornings and maybe I can convince DH to get up with me!

I know I would be terrible working out at home. Once I force myself to the gym, even if I do a half hearted workout, it’s still better than I would do at home. Plus I prefer classes. However both my kids love the childcare at my gym so that’s a huge incentive for me! Like, I could entertain them by myself at home, or they could go to the kids club at the gym and play with other kids and different toys and interact with their great babysitters, while I do something healthy for myself and know they are having fun. So that’s well worth the cost to me.

If you like classes, maybe you could find one or two drop in style classes locally that you like and are at a time when your SO could watch the kids? Probably cheaper than a full membership and you could supplement with at home work outs.

I have not been good at successfully working out at home. Mostly because I really need to work out in the morning and getting out of bed early has been a real struggle for me lately. I do have an elliptical and I love having it available to me without having to go to a gym. I am hoping to start a more consistent at home work out routine in the fall and then supplement it by going to a yoga studio once or twice a week.

@aprild: I just work out in the living room at night; the play mat is the perfect mat and this is after I clean up and put everything away! I've been using the 7m workout app that someone recommended here and I also poke around netflix/prime to see what workout videos are there.

I don't want to spend extra money and extra time going to a gym so I'm very happy with the home workout situation. May not be as complete of a work out and burn as much calories, but slow & steady is my game! I absolutely would waste a gym membership.

@aprild: My sister and i shared thedailyburn app, which has a ton of workouts. I know there are other options out there, so it may be something to try! A 15 minute drive + bringing my kids to the gym = pain for me!

@MrsDynamiteGal: The gym I go to now is 15 minutes away, which isn't really far, but it does add 30 minutes of driving time on top of the hour class, so it ends up being a good chunk of time.

@agold: I've heard of those bikes! That would be great to have

@gestalt: I mostly do cardio style exercise classes and occasionally yoga, so I don't use weights often. I can see how it would be hard to get into the workout mindset with kids toys everywhere. I would probably be working out in the bonus room which is also a play room in our house.

It's easier for me to stay motivated in group sessions, too. I had to quit my gym because we moved. The commute to the closest one to us now is like 20 minutes. Versus 7-10 minutes.

I sometimes go to video workouts on YouTube. There is also an app on Xbox that connects you to videos for like $9.99/ month. But I've slacked real hard in the last few weeks.

I may consider buying equipment instead.

Do you use weights in your workouts, or are you just doing cardio style exercise classes? Are there any other lower cost options?

I tried working out at home, and i think the longest stretch was 3 months using BBG workouts. But it's not for me, and i prefer a dedicated area, not having it mixed up with my kids' toys!

I quit the gym because I can't find a way to go since I had a baby. I jog with the stroller but also plan to start working out early morning streaming things onto apple tv. I just haven't done it yet. I'm dying to get a peloton bike and if I can find a place in my new house for one (and in our new restricted budget) I will get one asap.

Has anyone quit the gym to workout at home and been successful at it? I joined a gym several months ago, because I have a couple friends who go there, but each month I find that I'm going less and less. I like to do group exercise classes, but a lot of the class times don't work for my schedule. Plus, I have to bring my kids with me when I workout, so that adds another level of planning. The gym isn't cheap, and I'm wondering if I could save that money each month by working out at home and streaming online videos, but I don't know if I'll have the motivation to do it without a live instructor and others working out with me. Has anyone made the switch and made it work? Any thoughts on which is better?
