Thanks for all the support and feedback.

I went into my office with my resignation letter in hand. Before I could give it to my boss he accepted an situation I proposed previously that I thought was denied. I will be dropping to 3 days a week at my current salary in lieu of the retention bonus. I'll get two days a week to do what I want with the kids/house/DH but still have an income and the advantage of having a job while I'm job hunting.

I think this is a better deal. Last night talking to DH he was dreaming up all the household chores I can take over while I'm off.

I wasn't married or have kids at the time but I used the opportunity of having a scheduled exit at one job to take a summer off and it was great. I think I left at the end of June and started my new job in late August. The new company was totally understanding of my desire to have the summer off so it worked out great.
If possible, I would maybe say that I'm planning to stay on until October and schedule all my vacation time at the beginning of July (except maybe a day or two for interviews) then 2 weeks before vacation, give notice if there is a job in the works. If the job market looks grim you would have the option to stay until October but still get some summer vacation. Not sure if that plan is feasible but just what I would try to do.

I don't have personal experience with this but since you said you can get by without your income I would 100% quit now. How will you feel about yourself at the end of the summer if you keep working? It seems like your emotional and logical sides are in slight conflict, but the way I read it it is logical to quit now as well.

@Corduroy: And what happens if you say you're staying, but you continue job searching and accept an offer to begin before October?

I also get worried about the volume of other people applying for jobs at the same time. That's why my strategy is if I ever get laid off, start looking immediately.

I hear you though on spending time with the kids...I took 2 years off following the birth of my son.

I've done it twice (both times before kids) and I'm so glad that's how I did my searches.
The first time was sort of unplanned - I was unhappy and just walked in one day and there was a straw that broke the camels back and before I knew what I was saying I quit.
I ended up taking 4-5 months off total but only started my serious search in the last 1.5 months or so. It allowed me some time to really think about what I needed from a job and be selective. I liked that my job was searching for a new job. It was so much easier not worrying about when to schedule interviews and hiding it. Being able to say I could start immediately. Etc.
While enjoying some time off!
Similar situation as you where we didn't need the income so it made sense.

The 2nd time was more like your current situation. Our project was coming to an end because we lost funding and instead of waiting it out I decided to just be done. It was in May and I basically took the summer off. I ended up with a BFP in June so it worked out well for the first trimester misery. Unfortunately it ended in MC, but that's another story. But I was able to take my time in my search and take some time off. I got serious in August and started a new job in early Sept.

I guess my point is that if you are good at what you do and it's a field that is hiring / always has need, you'll be fine. I never seriously searched for more than 6 weeks and enjoyed all the extra time off. I was always worried that a "gap" would look bad on my resume, but everyone I interviewed with was fine with it (and some were jealous). And (not to toot my own horn) I received an offer for every interview I went on. So clearly it didn't matter.

@looch: Correct, If I quit there will be no severance. However, I can't picture myself staying until October and collecting it anyway unless my job hunt is a total failure. The severance is pretty crappy, especially since it required 5 months of circling the drain before you get it. My thinking is I'd be in a worse position if I worked my butt off until October trying to get the severance and then struggled to find something after October. Or find a job over the summer, push the new job to accept a late start date so I can get the severance and end up with no time to take off with my kids.

Not knowing the future is a real concern. I am an over thinker by nature and not knowing what's to come drives me nuts. The flip side of that is that I don't know what's to come with the kids either.

If you quit, no severance correct?

Here's my 2 cents...a million years ago, my company was going through rounds of layoffs. People were getting 6 months paid severance and a lot of them thought, great, I'll take the summer off and then start job hunting in September.

Then September 11th happened and it threw everything into a tailspin. People were out of work for years and were struggling because their severance ran out and unemployment wasn't enough.

So, if it were me, I would accept the package and stay through October. I know it is really tempting to take the summer off, I would want to do that too, but my fatalistic experience tells me otherwise.

It's difficult. I hate the fact that employers can make moves like this, my home state is really suffering.

Agree that it may depend on your field. Mine would be be forgiving about this type of gap. I would worry a little bit about getting to the interview stage, at which point it will be easy to explain. If your field uses cover letters, you could explain there that the company relocated.

A summer off sounds amazing. I am just finishing my second maternity leave and have really enjoyed this slowed down time with the kids. It would be even better without an infant/better sleep. If you can swing it, go for it!

I'm sorry about the relocation of your company but it sounds like you'll be just fine!

I think quitting while you're looking depends on your field. In my work, it's a lot easier to get a job while you have a job. There's a lot of eliminating positions and firings Within the field and if you have escaped it you immediately have a leg up over the competition. I'm not sure how specialized or competitive your work is though.

It sounds like you have thought it through and you know if you can make it work. It is something to set your work life balance back, so if you feel confident that it won't harm you in interview process I say go for it!
Best of luck

Personally I think because of the relocation of your company in any interview when/if they ask you about a gap in your employment you can use this as a valid excuse and say "they were moving out of state and I choose not to relocate with them and have been job reaching since." I don't think that will harm you at all.

My company announced two weeks ago that it is moving out of state. I got a relocation offer but I'm not going, virtually no one is. I've started submitting my resume other places but no solid leads yet. I have a good network and good reputation in my field. Although many of my colleagues were laid off, I was offered retention and severance if I stayed with the company until Oct. I expect to have a job by then. I don't need my income for day to day expenses so we'd be ok if it took me quite a while to find a job.

I have done a lot of thinking about my goals, why I'm working and what I want from a job. I want growth, leadership experience, and stability. I also want work life balance. (The remnants of ) my current job don't offer me that anymore. I can quit and enjoy some (indeterminate) amount of summer time with my kids.

I'm a hard worker and like to do the "right" thing so I'm somewhat struggling with quitting before I have a new job in hand. I think carving out time to spend with my family is the right thing but it seems scary.

Anybody have experience with this? I'm so afraid of it hurting my job hunt - I wish I could convince myself to care less about that.
