Ours has one lever for both the normal and rain shower heads- you can turn it to each one separately, or both on or both off. Talk to your plumber, it was a whole thing because the shower was only set up for a single mixer (the lever) and we had to find one that would work correctly.

@T.H.O.U.: Yep, it'd have its own control. But like you said, after reading the replies, I'm leaning toward a steam shower instead. We might do both, to cover our bases...but if we have to choose one, it looks like the steam shower is more popular.

Would the rain shower head have a separate control? So you could use the two normal shower heads without the middle one if needed?

I dont really see the appeal but I can see the appeal of a steam shower!

@Foodnerd81: White gorilla tape wouldn't stand out too much as a temporary fix. Gorilla tape is like duct tape but stronger. You can use it to patch holes in boats, it's really strong. You can peel it back up and use WD-40 to remove residue.

@Iced Tea: so gorilla tape, almost like duct tape? Have you tried removing it? We own but are redoing that bathroom in the next few years ( not because of the tub- the shower has tile and leaking issues). So I don’t want it to look like garbage but I hate the dumb jets. When we redo I want a reasonably big tub with smooth sides for easy cleaning.

I had no idea there were so many people who hate having water on their face in the shower! Sometimes the best feeling is just sticking my head underneath the water coming out of the shower and having it just rain down on me for a few minutes. I find it soothing. So put me in the camp of hell yeah rain shower!

@Littlebit7: I agree with all of this!

We are renting, and despite a dozen attempts with Oh Yuk and others, I couldn’t get the jets to run clean. I ended up covering the jets with gorilla tape so I can use it as a plain tub.

My husband is an architect, and steam showers are very popular right now. Rain showers less so, but a lot of people still like them. We don’t have either in our rental, so we bought nice detachables; they are one of my favorite home purchases. Makes it so much easier to bathe the kids and dog.

I voted it's okay. I've used them in hotels/resorts before but don't really see the appeal. If I am looking at a house, it wouldn't really deter me or motivate me.

But the steam function sounds fun!

@Foodnerd81: so agree with the jetted tub thing. We inherited one. It’s gross. No matter how well I clean it, it’s always gross. And it wastes so much water to get it filled to a level it can be used. If I was designing s bathroom I’d do a nice freestanding tub with no jets, but well insulated and with its own tankless heater.
And a steam shiwer

We've had them in our last 2 apartments. My DH loves them, I'm meh about them. We also have the adjustable height/detachable shower handle, which is what I use. If you do install one, make sure there is enough clearance behind you so that if you are, for example, washing your hair, or wanting to keep your head/hair out of the spray, you have enough room. Our last shower cubicle was somewhat small and the shower head was installed right in the middle. It was inconvenient for my hair to have it centered, it would have been better off center (but maybe not as visually attractive). 4x5' sounds like plenty of space though, so it probably won't be problematic.

My parents have a steam shower and rain shower and when we renovated our house my husband insisted we get them both, I was like, whatever! But now I use the steam every night- turn it on before the shower and just sit on the bench in the shower and relax like in a sauna (but it’s way less hot). It has a function where you can hook up music but I haven’t done it yet.

@Foodnerd81: they make jetted tub cleaner my parents and sister swear by. You draw the bath, put the cleaner in and run the jets for x minutes. It draws out all the gross gunk and then you drain the bath, donit again with plain water and your jets are clean. They say it’s super gross and satisfying. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our master bath has this huge jetted tub that’s like the size of my first bedroom with I lived in NYC and I hate it. Takes a ton of space and the jets are impossible to clean and nasty. I would prefer a nice, bigger than normal but not huge and not jetted, tub. But people have different wants and likes.

We're planning our bathroom renovation, and we'll probably have a big 4x5 foot double shower. We wi have two regular shower heads on opposite walls. We're wondering if we should include a rain shower head in the middle, hanging from the ceiling. We will already have detachable traditional shower heads, for anyone who might want more pressure and such. So it's just an extra. My DH thinks that potential buyers will love it down the road. Would you care about a rain shower in a house you're thinking of buying? Would you want a rain shower in your house if you had the space to add it?
