Ever since the election I've been making extra effort to be kind to each person I encounter. Little things: like saying hello, holding doors, wishing them a good day, things like that. I also got involved with city council and am tasked now with helping our neighborhood alder. It relates to kindness- caring for our neighborhood and the people in it, getting involved in some tasks to make and keep our neighborhood safer for the elderly and families with young children, etc.

@wrkbrk: 😊 Thanks. I feel better when I can share food with these people because regardless how they ended up begging, we all still need to eat, so it feels more "helpful" than cash--even if that's what some of them prefer to receive.

@Jess1483: Love it. I need to get my act together and make sure that we do this next year. We got an elf this year and next year I want to work on having a kindness elf that gives us a kindness task each day.

I wanted to update since we're halfway (a little more) through the month. The acts of kindness are going great! Some have been a bigger success than others (we LOVED delivering cookies to a friend and leaving change for the parking meter, but he didn't really get it when we bought a $10 gift card at a grocery store for someone behind us.) But on Wednesday, LO's preschool teacher said he convinced all his friends they needed to do "kind deeds" for each other and they all started writing notes and making cards. So it must be rubbing off a little bit ;)

The night before Thanksgiving I went out to the store to buy last minute items & was so sad to see several "regulars" out begging on the off ramps in the blustery weather. I went home and made a big pot of pasta & meat sauce & made up 3 goodie bags with the pasta, "to go" plastic ware we've collected, bottled water, hot chocolate packs (didn't have cups to transport prepared--but definitely thinking of getting some!), and a granola bar for each. Unfortunately by the time I got everything ready & sent out dh to deliver, only 1 of them were still there, but that woman was very grateful. The next day on our way to Thanksgiving dinner we took the remaining 2 bags & did some loops on our hwy to drop them off to 2 more people. It felt good, but still so small of an effort for people with no where to go that day. 😕

I was at Dollar Tree with my son last weekend buying paper products for his birthday party. The cashier guessed his age and wished him a happy birthday. We paid and were putting our cart aaay when a woman came up, gave my son $1 and said happy birthday. I let him pick a toy and we talked about how kind it was for a stranger to give him a birthday gift.

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with wrangling him and not feeling well so it was touching to receive a small kindness from a stranger to my son. I was also glad he made someone smile, he's a charming little handful. I just wished he could fully understand how nice it was!

@erinbaderin: It was awkward. Ha! We literally went after dinner on Christmas night. Its dark and in a really nice part of town. DD and I were dressed very comfy. When the poor fireman came to the door, I think he was shocked to see us and didn't know if we were in distress. He took the cookies as another fireman showed up to see what was going on. They chatted with DD for a while and then we went on our way. They seemed appreciative but I felt like they kept wanting to help us in some way.

A better planned delivery during the day when there are office personnel possibly there might have worked out better :)

@MamaG: I got the general idea and a number of our specific ideas from this site: http://www.coffeecupsandcrayons.com/random-acts-christmas-kindness-printable-advent-calendar/

I took out some that didn't work for us for whatever reason (we generally will be dragging the 17 month old around with us, and some just weren't suitable for me and my littles to try to accomplish alone), and also added in others that might mean a bit more to my little guy (things having to do with his teacher and other people he loves.) I'd be happy to send my word document if you want, though. Just pm me your e-mail!

@MamaG: Oh! How did that work? Did you just show up with cookies? Were they happy to see you? My older son is obsessed with fire trucks and I had thought about doing something like this to get a foot in the door, so to speak, and let him see a fire truck up close.

We delivered cookies to the fire department last Christmas. It was so fun for DD1 and I.

We're doing 24 acts of kindness for Advent this year. Inside their advent calendar is a small toy and also an activity. I'm trying to be flexible with the timing, but definitely plan to finish all 24. Some are:
1. Making holiday cards for my grandma's friends that live in assisted living.
2. Taping a couple dollars to a vending machine.
3. Letting someone before us in line (some are SUPER basic...)
4. Delivering hot cocoa to people working outside
5. Shoveling a neighbor's walk without them knowing
6. Delivering cookies to a fire station
7. Making a card for our garbage collectors.
8. Leaving a thank you gift for the janitor at LO1's preschool

I'm kind of cheating, because you've asked what we've done, but I'm really excited about this and think my LO will understand and enjoy it. Some of them are a bit out of my comfort zone, but I'm excited about it!

We were at a children's hospital 3 hours from home for some testing for our LO. He was about 18 mos old and kept running away from me while I waited in line at a coffee shop to buy him some milk. Another mom bought him some milk. I was honestly so shocked I just said a quick thank you and ran off to catch my boy!

DH is dropping of $100 worth of cans to a Boy Scout who's cans got stolen- I found out on my citizen info group. He's fundraising for a jamboree. Not exactly random, and a check would have been kinder but I'm happy about it.

We had our weekend breakfast paid for once when I was pregnant with #2. It was a group of motorcycle bikers on a Christmas toy run. They paid without saying a word. I'm just glad we left shortly after them so we could at least say thank you.

We returned the favor that same morning by paying for a elder that was dinning alone and had smiled politely several times at our giggly kiddo.

We've paid for dinner randomly a few other times when dining for an older individual.

This year, I'm going to carry out my failed plan last year to send thank you cards to the homes we really enjoy when out looking at Christmas lights.
