Coming back to update--I THINK we're over the hump. Last weekend, we had a couple of nights that weren't routine--like, she went to bed a bit later than usual after a super busy day, didn't get her bath, etc... Weirdly, I think it kind of hit the reset button for her and now she's back in her groove. Almost hate typing it for fear of jinxing, but wanted to update. :)

@mfa_lady: haha, yeah, it's a rough one! Stay as consistent as you can with bedtime and what you're comfortable with in terms of comforting, giving in, etc. I promise it does just stop one day! It truly is just a temporary "leap" and the good thing about those is that while they suck, what's on the other side is usually something really fun and exciting (development/personality/etc).
Good luck!!!

@SweetiePie: This could TOTALLY be it. I just found this from a quick Google search about the 64-week leap...

"We often tell parents that at this age, sleep problems are rarely sleep problems – they are discipline problems."

YIKES. Okay, Wonder Weeks, point taken! Haha.

Just another update...

We've had a weird few days. Friday we mixed things up a little and did dinner + bath earlier than usual and got some snuggle and play time in right before bed. That seemed to satisfy her, and she slept fine all night.

Saturday was terrible--we did the same updated routine, and she went down fine but freaked out at about 11:30. She was awake until 1, then again at 4. :(

Last night, she was awake and crying again for about a half hour after bedtime, and then slept fine all night after we finally got her down.

Who the heck knows what is going on, but hopefully it'll be over soon!

@Happygal: Yes and no. She's still doing it, but we've been really consistent the last few nights and it's lasting for shorter periods. Last night, she really just wanted me to snuggle with her (which she NEVER wants). I went in and just rocked her until she was sleepy enough and she went back down no problem.

@Pumuckl: You have no idea how much I love reading "last week"--there's hope! Haha. Wonder week would make a lot of sense here. Glad you guys are over the hump!

@snowjewelz: Solidarity! I'm trying to not freak out about it, but I'm so flipping tired so am reeeeeally hoping it's a fast phase. :)

I have a 16 mo old that has been doing this on and off. She'd be really great about bedtime for a while; let us know when she's ready to change into Pjs, falling asleep on her own (quick too), etc. But there have been bouts of fighting bedtime. The first time I think it was when we went down to 1 nap. Lately she is also resisting bed time even though she's tired. I think it's b/c she realized she can make choices and as tired as she may be, she just wants to play. I don't really have a remedy, as we never sleep train and just kinda go with the flow and do what we need to. So I had been stuffing her in my Tula at some point and then she passes out. I keep trying our "normal" routine first tho, hoping that she'll come around!

@mfa_lady: Yes, this was us last week! I remember there being a phase around that time with my LO1 as well. J is back to fully STTN and no fussing at bedtime now. I think there might be a "leap" around this age if you go by the wonderweeks.

@mfa_lady: I really didn't think we went to her that often when sick, but I guess bad habits are picked up easily and quickly. I actually had our pediatrician do a house call b/c I was convinced after a night of bad sleep that something was wrong. Once he said she was fine, and I got over feeling sheepish, I was relieved and relaxed. I wondered if she was picking up on our nervous vibes.

@Happygal: Thank you! Strangely, it makes me feel a lot better to know I'm not the only one. We had a rough January (I feel you) but that started very clearly with tooth issues and then she just got into a whole lotta bad habit-forming. I thought (hoped against hope) that we were in the clear for a while after that, but this is a weirder situation. I'll ask at E's next appointment, too.

We went through something like this recently. February and March were rough months health wise--double ear infection, stomach bug, teething. Sleep was disrupted in general, but there were also nights when I would walk in carrying her and she would start to cry and tense up. One night she had a freak out and was pushing at me like you describe. I thought about putting her down, but I knew she would end up thrashing on the ground. I had to turn the light on to snap her out of it.

I asked our pediatrician about it all b/c I was perplexed (and tired!) He said if ear infections are responsible for messed up sleep, you usually know it right after you lay them down b/c it's the pressure difference. I wondered if she could be upset b/c she was remembering throwing up in her crib, or if she was having nightmares--both of those thoughts were shot down as unlikely.

Once we had the clear for health issues, we had to go back to preparing for sleep training. Fortunately, we didn't need to do anything major. Relief! I hope this is just a random bump in the road for you all

@MOMTOLITTLEB: Thank you! It's really tough. I was just thinking tonight that I wished E was a liiiiiittle bit older so we could reason with her a bit. I hope it'll pass like it did for you!

@whiskers: That makes me feel better that B's naps don't get messed up when it happens to her, either. The way E's been screaming makes me think something is really wrong--but it seems fishy that she's totally fine all day. Thank you!

@mfa_lady: we just got through the canines.. Blech. All we have left are the 2 yr molars and I think she's starting on them. We've basically been going through teething constantly for 9 months. I've noticed a pattern and the bad bedtimes correlate pretty well. Her naps are fine, though.

My son went through a terrible phase like this. It was heartbreaking and so unexpected because he had been so good about bedtime since we started it at 3 or 4 months! We ended up just letting him go- and eventually he went back to normal. He was 2 years old so we tried reasoning with him but we never figured out what was going on. Sorry you are dealing with this, it was so upsetting!

@whiskers: It very well could be teething. E is working on her canines (and has been forever--her teeth take SO LONG) but the last two nights we've given her medicine and she's still flipped out at bedtime. I hope they pop through soon and she can recover!

@Rockies11: It kind of seems like it could be that, but she also seems kind of pissed at us when we come back in, haha. It's like she wants us in there (she'll grab our necks super tight but then push us away) but also hates us a little, too. Babies are CRAZY.

Ugh That's the worst. Good luck! Another idea if her bedtime sippy is in her room to relocate it. So, for example, if you do milk then books, do milk and one book on the couch, then go to her room for a second book and bed. The idea being to shave time for a calming routine but alter it enough to maybe not trigger the screaming and keep the in the bedroom portion as quick as possible.

B goes through this sometimes. I think it's related to teething for her, we usually give her meds if we can't get her back down. Big sis is awake still so we just let her play with her a bit before trying to put her down again. Good luck!
