Food processor - this is my kitchen workhorse. I use it to shred veggies, shred cheese, make sauces, frosting, thinly slice veggies, blend soups and sauces, hummus, pesto, baby food, it's easy to whip up biscuits in it too. Mine can also whip egg whites and knead bread, but I've never used it for that. I don't find it terrible to clean up.

Immersion blender - really hot soups. I also have a chopper attachment that I will use for small quantities when I don't want to use the food processor, and a whisk attachment that I normally use for egg whites.

Hand mixer - somewhat recent purchase, but I have a cheapie one. I needed it for a specific recipe and was glad to have it but can live without it.

Don't have a blender or stand mixer. Stand mixers are super pricey here (like 3 or 4 times more than in the US), so it's not worth it to me to invest in one.

@junebugsmama: yes! It's great. I boil the chicken then put it in while it's still warm and turn it on the second level and it shreds! It happens fast so just watch it so it doesn't turn to mush :)

I find the immersion blender best for pureeing things, like pumpkin if I'm making a pie. Depending on how much I was making I would use it for baby food too.

I love my food processor! I use it to shred cheese or carrots if I have to do a lot or just to chop up things like onion or pepper, etc if I need a lot for a recipe. I use it for pie crust and dips or pesto and sometimes purees. And it's great for chopping nuts! And making veggie burgers too!

The stand mixer is mainly used for baking and mostly just for cookies at that. We also use it in the summer for ice cream. Oh and frosting or whipped cream too if I need to make a lot or if it's already out.

We just have a little blender and it's sole purpose is to make smoothies or milkshakes. I have made pancake batter a couple times too but it didn't work great.

Dh is actually the cook in our family, but I know for the most part what he uses stuff for.

Food processor - hummus, pesto, baby food, I think he also used it recently to chop up carrots for meatloaf.

Immersion blender - soups and sauce (like spaghetti sauce)

Stand mixer - this is actually mine and I use it for baking. Although we do have a number of attachments for it, ice cream make, meat grinder, sausage stuffer that we've never used.

Totally different purposes/functions. The stand mixer doesn't have a blade - it's for mixing stuff. Mostly baking and dough.

I use the food processor for the vast majority of tasks that require a whirling blade, i.e. homogenizing something, like a salsa or hummus etc. Immersion blender is for when the job is too big for the food processor and it's all in one pot, or alternatively too small for the food processor e.g. vinaigrettes which we make in the little plastic cup that came with the immersion blender.

I have a stand, immersion and blender. Stand mixer definitely for baking and big batches of mashed potatoes, making whipped cream, dough etc. immersion is great for smaller batches of things. Blenders for purees, smoothed, soups, etc.

I recently scored a Ninja for $60, BNIB on eBay. That thing is the b@lls. Our blender has been dying a slow death for 6 months...

@junebugsmama: I have all of these appliances and hands down prefer the food processor for making dough. I feel like in the stand mixer it's really hard to get all the flour incorporated, you have to keep stopping and scrapping (and I don't think it really replaces kneading by hand either) and the food processor does all that work for you. Love love love making dough that way!

I use the immersion blender for soups as mentioned, it's good for salad dressing, and then I used it with the food processor attachment when I don't need a large quantity of something.

I have a Kitchenaid stand mixer that I received as a wedding gift that I have never taken out of the box. I got married 5 years ago. We just dont have space to have it out on the counter or somewhere easily acceptable and it's too heavy to move around. Very sad.

I have a hand mixer that I use for baking, food processor that I almost never use because it's a pain to get out and assemble and then clean and put away- I'd rather just chop things myself. Then I have a mini food processor/ immersion blender thing that I do use occasionally- the immersion part I use for soups, things like hummus and bean dip, and baby purees when C was starting solids (mostly for prunes!). It didn't do a very good job for smoothies, at least with frozen fruit which is what I usually use. Then I use the mini food processor attachment that came with it also for things like bean dip or hummus, or chopping veggies for recipes. Blender we use just for smoothies. Could easily live without the stand mixer and food processor for now but I hope one day I'll have a big kitchen with a place to keep them easily accessible.

I use the immersion mostly for hot soups. Sometimes smoothies too. We have a blender that I use for smoothies and milk shakes. I use the stand mixer for baking and shredding meat (best pinterest idea ever!). I use our food processor for shredding carrots/making hash style food, sometimes doughs or blending items. I could probably live with the food processor, its a pain to clean.

We have three of those and use them all frequently:
Immersion - use for soups and gravy, also DH uses it to blend his protein shakes
Food processor - use to shred or grind up veggies mostly, occasionally to make nut butter or hummus
Blender - Smoothies, occasionally soups, and I have used it to combine some types of dough (like for pumpkin bread)

We don't have a stand mixed because we don't have the space and we don't bake often.

I use the stand mixer for breads and some cookies. Also pizza dough. Pretty much any dough. I have a shredder attachment for it that I use for cheese, making coleslaw, or big shredding jobs.

I use my ninja food processor for smoothies, hummus, chopping things when I don't want to get my whole mixer dirty, turning old fashioned oats into quick oats, etc.

I have hand beaters I pretty much just use for whipped cream and beating eggs (for stuff like waffles and home made icecream).

We don't have an immersion blender or a regular blender :silly: . I use the stand mixer for baking and for twice baked potatoes. I have two food processors - one giant with all the bells and whistles and one teeny tiny one. I never use the giant one, but the small one gets occasional use. Mostly for chopping/shredding veggies or pureeing.

Hand mixer for things that wont fit in the stand mixer or traveling. We do our big holiday cookie bake at my mom's and bring that as an extra mixer instead of the stand mixer.

Immersion blender - soups, sauces, gravies, protein shakes, salad dressing - chunky liquids you want to make thinner

Blender - we got rid of ours when we were given a ninja food processor

@junebugsmama: for bread, I actually like the sullivan street no knead recipe. You need to plan ahead for a long rise, but omg, it's the best bread I have ever made.

I could legitmately get rid of all my appliances. I am much faster with a good knife and I don't bake that much. I really think a hand mixer and a good knife are all I need.

When do you use immersion blender, regular blender, food processor, vs. stand mixer?

I have a kitchen aid that I never use, but I would think stand mixer is best for baking? I know food processor can be great for food prep, but I haven't got the hang of using it really and it seems a pain to clean. Blender I use for smoothies, but my blender is really old and crappy. I just got an immersion blender for mothers day! What is that best for besides soup?
