@lilyann: Early bedtime is ROUGH. The earliest we can do it is 7 p.m. since I don't get home from work until 6. I wish we could do it even earlier, but alas, my son ends up with a 4 hr stretch before bed. Probably around 6 months he could stretch it to 2.5 hours and then 3 hours and then around 8 months 4 hours. It will get better!

@winniebee: I think you are right about the earlier bedtime. I just miss him so much during the day, it's hard for me to put him down so early. Plus DH already has a hard time getting to see him at all but if it is what's best, then I need to do it for him! I completely agree about the 2 hour max wake time, I just need to make his daycare understand that as well. Thanks!

@Sammyfab: He isn't rolling yet, and they swaddle his arms at daycare but he was doing so well with being unswaddled at night that I don't want to start again. I just wish we could see improvement with that rash. He only started taking a paci at night within the past month (when he got his first virus/cold), he isn't very attached to it at all so I don't think that is the problem but I will try to limit the use to see if it helps! Thanks!

I'm sorry sleep has been so rough! I agree with @winniebee about skipping the late nap and opting for an earlier bedtime. If he's awake between 4 and 7 then that's a long time for him to be awake and it could be making him overtired. I also agree that if he is rolling then you shouldn't re-swaddle. I can imagine that the rash would be bothering him and making it difficult to sleep comfortably so I'd get a second opinion if possible!

Lastly, do you feel like part of why he's waking so often is because he needs you to put the paci back in? If so, I'd see if you can help him back to sleep without it (you can try shh-pat or pick up/put down).

not sure about the rash....but 4 months is rough in the sleep department. my biggest suggestion would be to start an earlier bedtime (instead of a 5 p.m. nap) and go no longer than 2 hrs between awake stretches. at that age, my son could really only stay awake 2 hours before bed. i think you are right to not swaddle him anymore....especially if he can roll. you don't want to have to swaddle wean him again.

@sloaneandpuffy: I think I might swaddle him tonight and see how the rash is in the morning since he won't be able to rub it. I'm sure some of the fussiness has to do with the 4 month sleep regression, growth spurt, etc. Thanks for repsonding and listening to my rant!

@stiffaknee: Thanks for the advice! Going to try the swaddle tonight for sure. Thanks for letting me vent and listening!

My daughter went through a phase at around 4 months...She would have complete and total meltdowns during the day (she slept well at night, though we didn't stop swaddling her until she was 5 1/2 months and rolling from back to stomach)...it was so bad I went to my pediatrician in tears-I didn't know what to do! We changed her to a hypoallergenic formula, put her on reflux medication and nothing helped. I read every book, googled every symptom, cried, googled some more....Eventually I just accepted that I had a "spirited" baby and did my best to be patient with her and with myself. But it did get better and you just have to remind yourself of that.

If it were me, I would start swaddling him again. At least then you can get a good nights sleep and he wont be able to rub his face (and that might help the rash too!). My DD has a rash on her cheeks (as well as a little dermatitis) and my pediatrician said its pretty normal...

Theres something about 4 months...growth spurt, wonder week, whatever you want to call it...that was probably the toughest phase for us!

I don't really know what to tell you but I feel for you! I had a night like this over the weekend and I wanted to die. Also, my 4 month old had rashes on her face and body. I though it was heat rash but the doctor said she had a staph rash on her face and roseola on her body. Holy crap! So, if I were you I'd get the rash checked out with a dermatologist or another pedi. Maybe he's scratching his eyes and face because the rash is itchy?

Remember 4 months is also a big developmental time so he could be about to do something (roll over, sit, etc.) and if so, when that happens his sleep will get better again :)

Hugs!

I don't even know where to start so I am sorry if this is long/all over the place, I just need advice. (LO is 4 months old/almost 20 weeks)

For the past week or so my LO's sleep has been pretty bad, 4-5 wakeups vs. his normal 2. He used to not take a paci, but now he will so I am not feeding him at each wakeup. LO is not swaddled anymore and can put himself to sleep most of the time. He tends to take pretty good naps at daycare so I don't think he is overtired from that.
Example from last night:
4:30pm: pretty fussy after daycare
5pm: wouldn't go down for a nap even though he was tired
6pm: started bedtime routine since things were not improving
7pm: in crib, sucking on his paci and stiring quite a bit
8pm-10pm: stiring/restless but eyes closed
10:30 pm: crying, fed and put back down
11:30 pm: crying, put in paci
2:30am: crying, fed and put back down
3:00am: crying, put in paci
5:30am:crying, fed and put back down
6:00am: up for the day to get ready for daycare

He has also developed a horrible red bumpy rash on his face that feels very rough, he's had it for almost two weeks. I put coconut oil and aquaphor on it every night with no improvement. I mentioned it at his 4 month appt and his doc said it looked like just a "normal" rash...very helpful, UGH.

One more thing, I swaddle weaned at the end of last month and he seemed to be doing great with it (loves to suck on his hands-possibly teething) but lately he has been rubbing the crap out of his face/eyes and scratching himself even though I keep his nails as short as I can. Should I put him back in a swaddle?

This FTM is exhausted and not sure what to do....Please help!
