DD starts 3 year old kindergarten in January, and it is a class of 22 children with 2 teachers (and also 1 helper I think).

@hilsy85: Our is 2 teachers and two floaters for 10 kids. Maybe that is an NYC thing? Like a way to justify charging the equivalent of college tuition? Hahahaha.

In her class, it was 4:18 (3 full-time + 1 part-time employee) before summer break. However, it'll be 3:13 when she gets back. One person retired and a lot of the kids graduated, so they haven't hired a replacement for her. It's a mixed aged preschool.

I think the maximum ratio allowed around here is 3:20.

Our state legal ratio is 1:7 for 2 year olds and 1:8 for preschool (2.5 – 5), with a max of 21 kids in any classroom (regardless of number of teachers). Our center is definitely a little under the max ratio, with usually around 13 kids and 3 teachers in each preschool room.

I would not be interested in a place with only 1 teacher - they are still too young and need more individual attention than 1 teacher can provide to that many kids, IMO

for all licensed/regulated daycares in my province the ratio can't be more than 1:8 for preschool. LO was in a daycare with 16 kids and 2 teachers and we never had an issue with it except at drop off in the morning, sometimes there would be a lot of chaos and kids crying. Drop off was always better when we were able to bring him a little later.

We just moved and his new daycare has only 8 kids. He just started yesterday but so far it seems fine too and i was expecting drop to be harder because it is a new place, but he did really well today!

Our former preschool (SAH/WAH for the time being) had a ratio of 1:6 for 3 year olds. 12 kids total with 2 teachers. They also have floaters to help with breaks.

16 kids is a lot. But, since your LO is in a group childcare setting now, I think she could do fine. It would probably hard for a child to go from being at home with a parent or nanny to that kind of setting.

Overall, as others have said, my preference is more than one caregiver. I would maybe be okay with one teacher if there is a helper in there the majority of the time.

@NovBaby1112: yeah, I guess I didn't realize it was so low until reading how many are higher! It's not cheap though, so I guess I better be getting my money's worth! :silly:

Thanks all! I'm leaning towards the 2 teachers per 16 kids, as both the programs/teachers/directors seemed equal. @Truth Bombs: that's very true- didn't think about that

@hilsy85: that's an awesome ratio!! I don't think any of the preschools near us have that low of a ratio

It'll be 1:8 this year in her three year old class with 14 or 16 kids and 2 teachers. Last year, when she was 2, they had two teachers in her class of 12. Both places have the director and others available too. I would personally prefer two teachers with more kids to the one teacher with less.

DD1's room has almost 30 kids and 3 teachers. It seems like a lot, but they are split into groups and are always doing something different (one group will be in the library while the another is outside, and another at the computers), so it's more like it's 1 teacher with 10 kids at a time.

Ours is 2:24. But right now they only have 18 kids. I'm fine with it because I think at 3 years old they are old enough to voice their needs or learn to wait while the teacher is tending to another child.

I've never been comfortable with a single teacher in a room full of young kids. If one toddler is hurt/really upset/etc it's nice that one teacher can really focus on helping that child but there is still another adult in the room.

My 3 yo is in a class with 2:20, so one teacher per ten kids. She has been in the same school forever so she knows most of the 20 kids really well. The larger group is nice because I think there are more social opportunities although she has her favorite friends. One other plus of having two teachers is that if one is away, the other familiar teacher is still there along with whoever is covering, so I think that makes it easier for my LO. I am sure there are pros and cons for both so trust your gut!

M will be 3 in November and I'm looking into different preschools for sometime in the next year since they all have long waiting lists!

The 2 I liked best so far have a ratio of 1:8, but with 16 children in the class and 2 teachers, and the other has a ratio of 1:9 or 10, just 9-10 children in the class and 1 teacher. I'm trying to decide what would be better? 16 kids in a class just seems like a lot to me, but the ratio per teacher is lower. Thoughts? She would only be going 2 days per week and staying at her in home for the other 3. I guess we are just spoiled now bc she is used to 3 adults and a max of 10 kids!

What is your preschool ratio like?
