@Madison43: I think in the long run, he's going to wish that he just served his time like Michael Vick.

@mrbee: yeah, the lack of prosecution is a whole seperate conversation. That infuriates me, as does the NFL and Ravens taking action only after the public outcry.

I agree with @mrbee, he didn't get more than a slap on the wrist, if he would have done some time and some serious rehabilitation I might be more willing to forgive him. However, now everything is coming off to me as insincere, including the most recent interview with his wife. I feel like it is so scripted and "you say this and you say that, but never say this...." I feel like he feels entitled to be let back into the NFL without really proving he's a changed man. That doesn't sit well with me. I just don't think he is sincere and that's why I "judge" him.

While this may not be fair, I also think that I'd be more willing to give him a shot in a career where he does not have the potential to be worshiped by fans. I was so disgusted when he got a standing ovation AFTER the incident was revealed.

I'd be more willing to give him a second chance, if he had been prosecuted and faced time. As it is, he paid a $125 fee for pre-trial intervention and is taking anger management classes. Granted he lost a great deal of money from his NFL contract being terminated, but that feels to me like a separate consequence outside of the criminal justice system.

Thr Janay and Ray Rice interview (as well as some of then comments in the Elizabeth Lauten thread from yesterday) have me thinking a lot about how we as a society treat people that screw up. One one hand, there is no denying that Ray Rice treated his wife in a horrific and criminal manner. I also think the Ravens and the NFL had every right to take the action they did (although it this point it seems that both organizations rode the wave of public opinion after the video became public, rather than when they first learned of the incident, which is gross on many levels). But, if Ray Rice is sincere, and is working to improve himself so that this never happens again, I wonder how we - as a society - are helping him, or anyone else in his situation, achieve that goal if we continue to ostracize him (and even worse, his wife). I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished,or that it should be brushed under the rug, but shouldn't we be more vested in helping them deal with this in a healthy manner - whatever that may be -, than writing him off as a scumbag and her as a victim?

I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about this, and am wondering why others thoughts are.
