@Nskillet: I've never had an epi, but a spinal and epi are both in the same general location. They're different though.

An epi is continuous flow of medication, while the spinal is a single injection. It is short lived medication.

They numbed me with lidocaine first which kinda pinched. The first time I had one they compared it to a bee sting. I've never been stung before so I don't know how accurate that is.

This time he was like "okay, big pinch!" and was done. He tricked me because it was over before he said it was coming.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: is the spinal much different? I had a horrible spinal headache from being stabbed too many times for the epidural with my first delivery. I also fear the placement of that as I at least had painful contractions to distract me last time!!

@Nskillet: the bad experiences do stand out! I was really scared the first time around. I never met anyone with a positive story to tell.

I felt good with Chloe. I was out of the PACU in about an hour or so, and I was up and moving the night she was born. This time, it took over four hours for the spinal to wear off completely. No one was concerned, and it gave DH and I extra snuggle time as just the three of us. I could wiggle my legs but not my feet/toes, though I wasn't in any pain. I kept describing it as uncomfortable.

They wouldn't move me to a post partum room until I could crab crawl (because you scoot yourself into the Pp bed!) but even that was easy. I was able to get in my new bed myself, easily.

The worst part, again, was the spinal. What calmed me down this time was knowing the spinal is just like an epidural-- and if I had a VBAC, I knew I wanted an epi. I told myself that I would rather get a spinal, which is just a shot, than try to sit still while Laboring and having a catheter In my back. Silly, but if was calming for me.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: thank you for writing this!! You are amazing and I know so many have similar experiences but it's always the hard ones that stand out more. I'm getting so excited for my baby girl to arrive and know whatever the outcome I am going to be so happy. I keep picturing a more serene birth experience this time regardless of how it happens! I am more mentally prepared than before

@Nskillet: I've been trying to write my birth story but it's been tough finding time :)

This has been easy and mostly pain free. I don't feel like I've just given birth. I was on IV pain medication for 24 hours then I started Percocet every four hours. We came home a day early and I'm getting around just fine. I'm glad to have my husbands help though!

The day after we came home we went to dinner at my parents house. Car rides are fine for me.

Yestrrday we took Chloe to preschool, went to target and the peds, picked her up then went to lunch. We went for a walk last night too.

I really do feel great and am getting around easily. I can't lift Chloe which is hard (she doesn't understand) but I have done a few hours of solo parenting (DH picked up my pump and ran to the grocery store) and I was just fine.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I was waiting for your birth story and was so happy to read about your beautiful girl! The more I get closer to labor the more nervous I get! How has the recovery been with your toddler? That has always been my biggest concern! I know what to expect myself by way of pain and management it's just my unpredictable firecracker of a daughter I worry over.

@Nskillet: I was a VBAC candidate and went straight for the RCS. A lot of factors went into making my decision, but my OB did always tell me that recovering from a planned section was easier than recovering from a trial of labor resulting in an emergency section.

For what it's worth, I am 7 days PP and feeling pretty great. This was easier than my first section!

@tequiero21: thanks for this reply! How interesting! There is still a good chance I could go into labor and ill request the section. I'm so glad to hear your recovery has been great!

@daniellemybelle: I have to think this is accurate! I labored for so long and was so exhausted emotionally and mentally after DD1 was born! Plus I had to recover from a partial vaginal delivery (bruising stretching soreness) and the abdominal surgery of a c section. I'm keeping my options and mind open to whatever outcome this baby has in store for me! I refuse to attach negative emotions to this birth one way or another this time :)

I think like @Arden: says, it would make sense that the baby is more ready to be out if you go into labor first.

As for YOU and your recovery, very anecdotally, in the VBAC Facebook group I'm in, many moms seem to have a better recovery with a scheduled RCS vs a C-section after attempting a VBAC. I think a big part of it is how exhausted you are mentally/emotionally and physically if you go through labor only to have a surgical birth after. Not advocating that you not try to VBAC! Just an observation.

Hmmm no clue, but I can tell u that I went into labor the day of my scheduled csecs! Two separate pregnancies, what are the chances! Was going to try vaginal with the first, but due to my son's heart rate, we went with csec. I'm only a week and a half out on this last pregnancy, but so far, both recoveries went and is going well.

I've been wondering about this too! Although I'm pretty sure I'm planning a vbac, I thought I had read somewhere that the hormones your body releases during labor help prepare baby as well. So I've assumed that it's just less of a shock for baby to be taken by c-section if you were already in labor beforehand, and it's one of the reasons I've resisted setting a date for a c-section in case I don't go into labor on my own...but since I can't remember where I heard that piece of information I'm really not sure of how reliable it actually is.

@Nskillet: Ok I found one study here. I'm sure the one I read before was a different one, so I'll keep looking.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9066188

Neonatal respiratory distress rates were significantly lower in those who waited until contractions had begun before performing a cesarean - 11.1% vs. 31.8%.

I have a RCS booked for 10/13 however if I go into labor early intend to attempt VBAC. Does anyone know if your body does better one way or another in the instance of a c section? I had an emergency one with DD1 after 3 hours of pushing a stuck baby. I went into labor on my own and then had the section after many hours of labor and had what I remember as an easy recovery considering!
