Yes. I use gloves to cut up the raw butternut squash. I've never had a problem after it has been cooked though. Sometiems the sap from zuchinni etc will do this too.

@cvbee: make sure you poke a few holes to vent the steam! Never seen it happen but I've heard it can explode in your oven if you don't! I poke a couple holes with the tip of my knife, microwave for a few minutes then cut in half. Much easier.

Speaking of squash, I find it way too hard to cut raw squash so I just put the whole thing in the oven and bake it, then after it is cooked I cut and seed it. Call me silly for never thinking of it before, but after all the years of detesting having to cut the hard squash, it was like a miracle when I found out you could bake it without cutting it first.

I could be wrong but I think it is one of those things that affects a lot of people but not all, like asparagus pee smell, and mosquito bites or poison ivy (though not sure it would be considered an allergic reaction).

I had this reaction when I made butternut squash soup last week! It was the first time it ever happened, so I thought it was just a weird fluke--I didn't realize it was a fairly common reaction!

@Mrsbells: I think it's like the sap that seeps out of the skin when it's cut and while it bakes - so because I am weird and don't want to waste it I used to eat leftover right off the cut pieces of skin so my mouth was right up on it :/

Yes it always happens to my left hand, since I hold the squash with it. If you are careful of how long you hold it and wash your hands a few times, it's not quite as bad but I do still get a reaction. I love it though so I'll still do it.
I never heard of the reaction from cooked squash, but I actually did have something like @JerricaBenton: with really dry kind of painful lips and gums. I wonder if had squash at the same time.

@JerricaBenton: wow it happens from cooked squash too? I thought it only happened from exposure to the raw skin.

There really should be a warning on them, because I honestly didnt know what was causing my hands to crack so badly until I googled it

I have a friend that this happened to! And here's a little TMI about me but when I bake squash I slice it out into chunks to serve and a few times I ate the leftover squash attached to the skin and I got a horrible rash around my mouth! Mangoes do that to me too.

I introduced squash to my baby this week and it went ok I guess, but I had a really odd reaction to the squash

I found a blogger that had the same reaction when I googled it online http://foodworld-eva.blogspot.com/2010/01/squash-reaction-on-skin.html
Has anyone else experienced this? I dont plan to cook squash again because of this, it was a bit sweet for me anyway and my LO didnt seem to like it as much as she liked green beans
