Both of my boys had over a week of stomach upset and fussiness with the rotavirus vaccine. I didn't notice any blood in their stools though. I hope your lo feels better soon. Being pro vax doesn't make you immune (no pun intended) to having anxiety about the side effects!

@coopsmama: I've also found this definitely isn't one that drs require. We skip it too.

@travellingbee: the "rare" reaction THOU posted is intussuseption which has a classic sign of current like jelly stools which is why the doc decided that's not the problem.

Because of the crud that's being put into the gut, I can see why a baby would react this way.

My DD had some awful stomach issues after the rotavirus vaccine. It lasted 48 hours. She was so upset after and she had nasty green poopy diapers.

My LO is 15 weeks, and she had a reaction similar to yours after her first rotavirus vaccine - green mucous stools with blood in them. I took her to paediatrician and he thought that it was most likely a reaction to the vaccine (it was within 12 hrs of having it), but there was also a possibility of MSPI. LO had formula when she was a newborn, but has been exclusively BF since about 8 weeks, without having had a reaction to dairy previously. Now at 15 weeks we definitely know she has a mild reaction to dairy in my breastmilk as she has had the green/bloody stools on occaision since. I'm still going to give her the next rotavirus vaccine dose, but I do think that it gave her a reaction.

@coopsmama: that is interesting! I guess there is never consensus, especially in the medical community. @travellingbee: thats great that the doctor doesn't think its anything too sinister! Sorry your little one isn't feeling well and I hope it's over quickly for you and for him!

@ScarletBegonia: Interestingly enough, having discussed this with three doctors from different practices, all agreed this is one that they consider unnecessary. Those dire complications are incredibly rare here in the US or other first world countries. (My point being - I hardly think the recommendation from peds can be consider unanimous.)

Dr does indeed think it's a reaction to the vaccine and she doesn't think it is the rare severe reaction that@T.H.O.U.: mentioned but wants to keep an eye on him to be safe. We will monitor to decide if we will do the second dose in two months but if it is just some tummy upset and bloody stool we will definitely do at least the second dose. I'm way pro- vaccine and I'd rather him have this than the virus, @ScarletBegonia: for sure.

I think its great you're following up and that the doctor will check it out, because blood in the stool is always a big red flag.

I will say that my bestie is a paediatric surgeon and I spoke to her at length about the rotavirus vaccine before my son got it - she told me some absolute horror stories about babies under a year contracting rotavirus and how much damage (long and short term - as a surgeon she sees the long term effects that can only be surgically corrected) it can do to their delicate digestive systems. She said that the vaccine has a lot of side effects and adverse reactions - probably more than would be acceptable for most vaccines - but that the alternative can be so devastating that doctors are nearly unanimous in their recommendations of it. Many of them believe that it is the riskiest of the vaccines to miss for "non-vaxxers" or adjusted schedule vaxxers, because it is so present in the community, as opposed to smallpox or rubella or the like which are relatively rare.

Sorry to hijack! I hope your little one feels much better soon. Vaccines are a bitch :bummed:

@travellingbee: I'm so sorry. I hope he's getting better. Are you taking him in right away? I would take it very seriously because vaccine reactions should not be taken lightly. Please
keep us posted on how he's doing!!

Also, i wouldn't blame one vaccine. If he recieved all the vaccines per the current schedule then he got jabbed with multiple vaccines, viruses and one live virus( rotavirus)

@travellingbee: It's been awhile (over 2 years now hehe) but I remember we always blamed what I ate for dinner that night, so I think the worst was the day after the shot and then it gradually cleared up over the next 1-2 days after that.

This happened to us (every time she got a dose of this vaccine actually, so at least twice) and my baby actually did have MSPI so it made me very confused and I ended up eliminating even more foods due to these reactions. I only realized the pattern after noticing in my food diary months later. If you can stand it and your baby seems to be getting better, I would wait a couple days before trying to figure out if it's food related. I wish I had. Although my baby definitely did have a milk/soy issue, I'm pretty sure I eliminated stuff that I didn't need to as well because I confused the vaccine reaction with a food one.

Edited to add: I would definitely call your pediatrician if it's bad. In our case, it just seemed like an MSPI flare-up. I just meant you probably don't need to start eliminating again.

Yes, I've heard of a lot of reactions with my friend's kids with this vaccine. (We actually skipped it entirely after hearing of the reactions and discussing with our doc.) The blood makes me nervous, though - I've not heard of that one. Definitely make a call to the ped for follow up.

Yesterday my LO had his two month vaccines, including the rotavirus vaccine. He was terribly fussy all night with some screaming that we couldn't seem to relieve in the evening. He finally calmed down after some Tylenol and a nap on me. Last night he had several crying jags overnight with some big spit ups, and this morning he had a huge diarrhea with blood in his stool. He's never had that before. He was a very gassy baby as a newborn and we were worried about MS PI, especially after a few mucousy diapers, and a rash on his face and chest, but all seems to have cleared without me eliminating dairy. ( I did for two weeks and it didn't seem to do much, so I've been back on dairy for a while) i've left a message for the doctor office, but I've read online that a stomach upset could be a reaction to the rotavirus vaccine, and was wondering if anyone else had something similar.
