I am so glad I'm not the only one who has had this thought. I have made a major effort to put away devices when I'm with the kids but want them to see me reading. My kids do call my Kindle "momma's book" and its an old one that doesn't have color or touch screen or anything so I think that helps. I would add to the great responses above that the type of attention you give a device that is solely displaying a book is different from the attention you give a phone or tablet that has messages and alerts popping up all the time. I think sitting and reading vs. constantly diverting your attention away while spending time with your kids are two different entities, and they will hopefully recognize that, if that makes sense.

I actually started going to the library and getting actual books because of this. The kindle is so much more convenient, but after getting a few paper books, I also remember how much I enjoy reading on paper.

That's a good point I hadn't thought about. I usually use an ereader (I have more than one) because they're easier when I'm holding her for naps. My mom does the same. So she's not seeing a ton of real books right now. I'll have to look into a case like was mentioned, or try to get out more actual books as she gets older. She actually loves being read to now, so I want to keep her in that mindset of reading is good as she gets older and discovers electronics!

This is a tough one for us too. DH and I love to read on our phones. Often before bed when she watches a cartoon, we will sit with her and we will be reading. But I dont want her to feel like we are neglecting her. Obviously we can't really talk to her about the books (not appropriate content) but sometimes I just show her the words or say, let mommy finish this page in my book so she sees I'm reading. A huge impact to good literacy is letting your kids see you read and I want to instill that even if we are reading electronically!

All great suggestions, thank you!

@erinbaderin: I do have a cover on it but it's very similar to my iPad cover so I can see the confusion. I love the cover @catlady: suggested so maybe it's time to upgrade my cover and make it look more like a real book!

@Bubbles: I agree. I have the touch screen Kindle so DD2 loves touching it and watching things change. I can see how she would think it's a device to play on!

@lamariniere: Oh I'm right there with you - I definitely spend time on my phone/tablet when they're awake but I don't have the excuse of working! :silly: I really try to limit it though as the last thing I want my girls to remember about their early days is that mummy was always on her phone!

@Foodnerd81: That is a brilliant idea! DD1 loves books so much that I was thinking of starting her on some chapter books. This might be the perfect opportunity - we can read them together on my Kindle and she'll realise it's a book, whilst also being chuffed she gets to do something like mummy!

@808love: I'll try that with a kids book for my almost two year old - she'll get a kick out of changing the font as well, I'm quite sure!

@edelweiss: I just showed it to DD1 today for the first time (I'd been working my way through a massive tome the last several weeks and had a few other proper books I was reading before that, so she hasn't seen me use the Kindle much lately) so hopefully she gets it quickly like your LO!

i thought about this also. i use my kindle with the cover like others have mentioned, and after explaining to LO a couple of times that this is my book and letting him look at it (he wanted to play with it a few times and quickly realized it was all words), i think he understands.

@catlady:  I have a similar cover!
I agree that putting kids books in there helps make the leap. LO thinks it is so funny to change my font to the largest setting. It kind of looks like a children's font that way with just a few words per page!

I agree with @erinbaderin, try to find a cover that looks like a book. I have this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Verso-Prologue-Cover-Kindle-Paperwhite/dp/B006ZCBN9E

My LO calls my kindle "Mama's book". She knows it's different from my iphone or our kindle fire.

@erinbaderin: my LO also calls my kindle "mommy's book"- and I have a cover the flips open like a book. But I also have an old one so no bells and whistles making it seem like an iPad.

@Ree723: I think probably you are overthinking it, but I would also worry about this so I get it. Could you download a few kids books that you could read aloud to them from the ereader so they associate with a book instead of iPad?

I do this in front of my children too. My son sometimes asks me to read aloud what I'm reading, but I have explained to him that I am reading a grown up book that is not for children. So far this explanation has been ok with him. I try to limit phone use, but the reality is that I need to be alert to my emails since I WAH, so I do check from time to time.

Yes I have had this thought and I am more comfortable reading real books around him. We don't have an iPad so it is less confusing, but I have showed him the Kindle screen so he can see it looks just like a book. But I imagine he still sees it as an electronic device - it's got buttons! It's a tricky one, as I agree with you about setting an example of reading for pleasure.

I have a cover on my Kindle that flips open, and my son calls it "mommy's book" - yesterday he opened it up and said "I reading mommy's book!" Could you do that, get a cover that makes it more visibly a book?

*Disclaimer: sort of ridiculous parenting question coming up!

I'm a SAHM to my two LOs - whilst we do get out and do things during the week (including preschool three mornings a week for my 3.5 yr old), we are definitely homebodies in that we all enjoy just hanging out at home. My girls are pretty independent and whilst I play with them, interact, and read them stories throughout the day, they also have a good amount of time where they are playing together or independently without my intervention, which is great.

Some of the time they're playing independently, I am busy doing other chores, but I also like to just sit down in the playroom (conservatory) enjoying the sunshine and relaxing whilst they play. I make a somewhat concerted effort to stay off my iPad and phone whilst they're awake, although I am by no means perfect at this, but I do frequently like to read a book whilst they're playing. I prefer real books but the reality is that I do a lot of reading on my Kindle as well.

This morning, my 3.5 yr old asked me to read her a story after I was done on my iPad - I wasn't on my iPad, I was reading my Kindle. I tried to explain the difference to her but I don't think she got it. This might just be me being a crazy mum, but I don't want my girls seeing me with my nose in my iPad all the time, but I don't mind them seeing me read a book. I think seeing adults reading for pleasure sets a good example and I'm happy to do that (especially as I'm a bookworm by nature anyway) but it is bothering me that they think I'm on my iPad when really I'm reading.

Anyone else ever have this thought? Am I just being ridiculous? Do you limit your time on your reader around your LOs? Do you limit your phone/tablet use around them?
