@Corduroy: I’d be inclined to keep her in RTI but that’s based on my knowledge of things in my state. It would guarantee access to someone who is more specifically trained in early literacy, rather than a broader education background. It’d also mean more regular testing to ensure she caught up and didn’t fall any further behind. So if you have some concerns then it makes sense to get the guaranteed tracking and help from trained professionals, but if you aren’t concerned or the time it takes is too significant, your teachers offer is great as well.

ETA: though it just occurred to me that the only reason I know this much about my state’s program is because I was asked to serve on a focus group because it isn’t working. At least statewide we don’t see any benefits to students who get the extra services. Some of the districts have nice gains though so maybe see if you can find out how well the program is performing?

I just finished the parent teacher conference. The 'E' level was apparently a mistake. After I emailed last year's levels to the paraprofessional DD was reassessed by her teacher. Her current level is 'I' which is much closer to what I expected and where she was at T2 last year. The teacher noted both comprehension and fluency holding her back from meeting standards.

Now her main teacher is asking if she want to keep DD in RtI or pull her out. She also offered to do 15 minutes a day one on one with DD during her office hours. She seemed to be leaning towards office hours but left the decision up to us.

The things that have stood out most to me are b/d and on rare occasion p confusion and lack of mastery of some vowel combinations (e.g. oi, ou).

Anyone have any insight on staying in RtI?

@JennyPenny: Thanks, I looked up the state information and that gave me a lot more context. I still don't love the Response to Intervention name but it makes more sense with the context.

@meganmp: Thanks for the suggestions on the questions. There was a read aloud evaluation the first week of school. I'm wondering if the teacher re-evaluated DD this past Friday after I pointed out to the paraprofessional that the E level was quite a step back from the March eval.

I hope to find out more tomorrow.

I would frame it as @meganmp: suggested. You want to be able to support your daughter at home and where should you focus. Ask questions about the program from there. I’m sorry you haven’t had great communication about it from the get go. That would make me stressed! ;)

I'd want to see the work that the teacher did with the F&P level. There should be some read aloud where they check for fluency as well as some comprehension questions. I'm wondering if what is holding her back is her fluency? It's possible. If you frame it as, "We want to work with her at home in order to help her- what should be our area of focus? What data are you using?" that might help. If she (unlikely) gives you a copy of the F&P test, I'd be happy to look at it for you!

I work in an education-adjacent field so hopefully someone with deeper knowledge can chime in. But Response to Intervention is just a very broad term and not a specific program. Basically it's the practice of using assessment to identify areas of student need, matching the level of support to what students need, and tracking their progress to make adjustments as necessary. Many (all maybe?) states and districts have formal RTI programs, often around reading to help make sure students are where they should be. I know in my state, there are broad regulations of what the RTI program for reading should include and then each school/district comes up with the specifics. For example, if students are reading below grade level in 2nd grade they may get a remedial summer camp or after school tutoring, etc. depending on what school they go to.

I don't know if that helps in forming questions to ask, but you may want to look up what your state's reading intervention regulations are. It sounds like it might be standard practice to put everyone scoring below some level at the beginning of 2nd grade into an intervention program. But I think knowing what the state requirements are could give you a better frame of reference for anything else they tell you.

I want to have a constructive parent teacher conference call tomorrow. Any suggestions on specific questions to ask? Any insight on 'Response to Intervention'?

My 2nd grade daughter was abruptly put into a 4x per week reading program called Response to Intervention last week. The teacher hasn't told us anything about it and asked that we direct all questions to the paraprofessional working with our daughter. I emailed the paraprofessional and explained that I'd like information as soon as she's ready to give it because I'm confused as to what the issue is and what the goals of the program are.

DD attended one session on Thursday. On Friday her teacher asked to do a one on one session with her and my daughter read something to her. We still haven't heard from the paraprofessional.

I'm frustrated by the lack of communication. This is all through distance learning while my daughter is at daycare so I'm not observing any of the calls.

We have a teacher conference tomorrow and I want to know a whole lot more about why DD is in this program and what it's supposed to do for her. DD has always been on the slow side to meet standards for reading but when DH and I raised concerns with her K and 1st teacher they weren't concerned. In March she was a Fountas and Pinnell 'I'. She has made big improvements since then and probably more importantly she's decided that she wants to read whereas before she had no interest in it.

Her teacher this year evaluated her at 'E' but only told DD it was the level they would set her reading app too. I figured it was so the kids could have some rapid progress/review and didn't think too much of it since it wasn't communicated to the parents. I was trying to not be 'that mom' and come in demanding to know what was going on with her score.
