We started with reading the Going to Bed book, then added Goodnight Moon. We read him those two before bed every night until he got older and started asking for different books. I would also read him a story before nap. Once he got older (probably about 18 months) we settled into our current routine, 2 books before nap, 3 before bed, he picks the books. When LO was really little I mostly read whatever book I was reading out loud to him, with some board books thrown in for visuals. As he got a little older and more attentive, we added more board books and picture books. The picture books got longer, and then we started mixing in chapter books with pictures a bit after 3. At 5, we still do a mix of picture books and novels, and I don't see this changing much in the near future. These days we aim for 40-45 min/day of fun reading (the amount of time has varied over the months/years), and we usually hit that. We now do most of our reading during the day or right after dinner, but we typically do one short book in bed (5-15 minutes). </p> <p>As for him reading to me, we sometimes read every other sentence from a book, or trade off pages. I used to read three books at every nap and bedtime. Then he started to enjoy being read to and he could sit through multiple books at a time. He's 5 now and can't read on his own but still loves being read to (he starts school this fall). My younger LO has been read to since being in utero since she was always there to hear us read to DS. She wasn't as attentive as an older baby so between 12 months and 18 months she didn't really sit still and would be playing while we read. Now, she loves reading and always wants to be read to. </p> <p>We don't really have a set routine, other than bedtime.
