I don't read/watch the news. If there's something big going down I'm sure to hear about it on fb or from DH.

@ladyfingers: @NovBaby1112: @BananaPancakes:
I was traveling and just saw your responses but this is exactly how I feel. I still can't get two currentish events involving kids out of my head and I cry about them.

@ladyfingers: I think this is really my issue. I feel so drawn to reading the really terrible stories that show the worst in the human race. I can't figure out why.

ever since having LO, i cannot read the news for fear of hearing about something totally disturbing and unsettling. It effects me for DAYS, especially when it involves children/pets. last week my DH and i were on the train and he was reading the paper, and I happened to glance over and saw an article about how a man in Ohio was just put to death for a horrible, disgusting crime on a 6 month old baby and I cried about it every day and could not get it out of my head. I was SO MAD that i read it and it shook me up for days. So although I would love to be up to date on topics happening, I just cannot bear to read about any sad or disturbing stories like that, it breaks my heart in a million pieces and takes me a long time to recover.

I have an issue with reading disturbing news stories. I'm drawn to them and then I get very upset by them. I need to work on not doing this! I don't know why I do.

I used to keep up with the news and even started to major in political science in college. Ultimately though I would get so upset about different thing that I would hear, they would literally keep my up at night (more the sad human interest stories not the murders etc so at least I wasn't scared.) I hated the lack of the positive side of stories, my husband works in the news industry with some local t.v. stations and the way they sensationalize stories makes me sick.

Now my consumption of news is limited to NPR once or twice a week in the car. Occasionally my husband will have one of the late night shows on and I will over hear something they are discussing and I will look it up but otherwise I just rely on my mom to call and tell me about catastrophic events.

@artbee: That sounds just like my grandma. I would visit her every day after work and she loved to rehash all the details of whatever child abduction story was in the news. Womp womp.

I am also a news junkie but I don't think it has an impact on my ability to judge the risks of a situation. The news reports on something because it doesn't happen that often, making it news-worthy. So even though there are robberies, homicides, terrorist attacks, etc. on the news, it doesn't mean it's happening nonstop and you should never leave your house for fear of being shot.

I'm a pretty big news junkie and try to rely on a variety of sources. We don't do TV, so that tends to eliminate a majority of the crap...if I'm listening to the radio, it's usually NPR or a friend's local radio show . I try to read more in depth discussions and analysis. My media diet satisfies my information needs without being inflammatory.

I honestly don't keep up with the news. I feel pretty ridiculous when I don't know some huge world event going on (then I'll try and do some research). I think it keeps me sane though. Maybe a bit naive and in a bubble, but its my happy place and I'll stay there until it affects me negatively :)

I'm not a fan of the news. The only time I ever heard any news was when my grandma was alive.... all she did when she got older was sit there and watch the news all day. And it was always bad news, so it would freak her out. She would tell me things like, "did you hear about the baby who was kidnapped?" right after I had my LO!

I know it's good to be informed, and of course if something huge is going on I'll watch, but I just think I'm better off not watching/reading.

I try to stick with the big picture and only newspapers, not TV. I read the New York Times the most and it doesn't really give me anxiety because there's not too much designed to scare. I can't do local TV news because it's all "car crash! shooting! robbery! fire!" It's so alarmist.

I wouldn't want to give up my news habit but if it was giving me anxiety I might consider it!

I am also a big news junkie and my husband hates it. It really is like an addiction, but I feel like I need to know everything that's going on. Of course, so much of whats reported is bad and it can make me so unsettled. I've actually been trying cut back since the bombings because of how depressed I was feeling. Interesting article.

I'm a self confessed news junkie. I read multiple news sites, several times a day.
In doing some self awareness exercises, I've realized, reading bad news seems to be one of my anxiety triggers.
I've always scoffed at people who don't keep up with the news, but I'm considering giving up my news-reading.

I found this interesting article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/apr/12/news-is-bad-rolf-dobelli

Do you read the news? Could you give it up?
