Thanks so much for all of the great advice!

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks so much for the detailed schedule-- this is exactly what I was looking for, especially since our "problem" is usually during the middle of the night. The every-hour wakeups are just so, so hard and I am hoping we can help him sleep better.

A 4 month old should be able to go at least 5 hours from last feed before bedtime to first night feed and 3.5-4 hours between night feeds. So I would CIO any wakings before 5 hours for the first night feed and CIO any wakings before 3.5-4 hours for any night wakings after that.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

@hilsy85: there is no hard and fast rule. your lo might wake up once, twice, three times... or not at all.

charlie woke up twice the first 2 nights we sleep trained and we fed him at midnight. but then he had a hard time getting back down after his 4am wakeup, so i wished we had waited to feed him at his 4am wakeup instead of at midnight.

i guess if you are keeping a feeding i would aim for middle of the night? some people choose to night wean when they sleep train at the same time. that's what i did with olive, but she was 14 months old and didn't need it anymore.

@Meggo5: just wanted to wish you luck! maybe you'll find if you move him out, when he's waking every hour he'll fall back asleep naturally? I know I slept wayyy lighter when LO was in our room and once he was in his crib I couldn't really hear him unless he was genuinely hungry (even though he was still waking up and making noise)

@Mrs. Bee: how do you know which night waking to make the one that you nurse at?

is he going into the crib awake at night?

if so, then i would cry out the first wake up. you can do ferber checks at 5 min, 10 min, 15 min, but if it makes lo more hysterical, sometimes it's better not to go in. you pretty much leave them until they fall asleep on their own. hopefully it's not too long. charlie and olive were both really easy to night train and cried less than 20 min on and off.

then you repeat for the rest of the night wakings. we kept one middle of the night feeding, but they both dropped it on their own pretty quickly.

one thing that might be helpful to know is that babies have a strong shift in their sleep cycle at 4am, so a lot of babies wake up at that time.

also you might try a dream feed.... that might be helpful. we never did it but it does help some people so that the baby is waking up on your terms instead of when they come out of a sleep cycle.

good luck!

I will be following this! We're not ready to sleep train yet, but LO also goes down easily but seems to have lots of wake ups at night...

LO is 4 months old today (where has the time gone?!) and we have been battling awful sleep patterns for most of his life so far. He tends to go down easily, sleeps for a few hours, and then wakes every hour after that. We are ready to create a better sleep situation for him and are prepared to try just about anything.

He is still in our room and we plan to transition him into his crib tomorrow night. Also, we would like to try some version of CIO but are not sure how to best do this when he will go down easily at first. Do we set a time limit for the middle of the night wake ups and then let him cry? For how long? I would love to know if anyone successfully followed a plan that worked well and if so, what sort of schedule you used.

I assume he will need at least one middle of the night nursing session but would like to come up with some kind of rough game plan to help us get through this!
